Its lcoation - slap bang in the centre of Ross The staff attitudes, the dark - the dining room was so dark you couold not see what you were eating and I doubt the net curtains have been cleaned in a decade. The lights in our room made little or no difference to being able to see and one was not working.

Breakfast was good and the location was handy. In need of restoration - shabby in places. Dining room was really dark and depressing!! Bathroom not up to standard.

Room was fine and staff ok Breakfast was, to be honest, very disappointing. It is usually my favourite meal at a hotel. Choice of cereals very limited. I was looking forward to a hot breakfast and chose the Eggs Benedict. The Hollandaise sauce was inedible (tasted strongly of vinegar) and ruined the meal. Coffee cold and tasteless.

It was a break from DIY at home!! The hotel seems to be run by children who needed more direction from a manager. There was no forethought - for example - at dinner the wine was not chilling. Saying that though, the staff were friendly. The food was, at best, average - there were 2 vegie options and 1 was off, the other was possibly the worst meal I have ever eaten, they did take my main course off the bill, but after no cold wine, not having my choice of meal and then the other meal being inedible I was a bit miffed! We were asked how our stay was at the end and we said that it was ok and not particularly good value for money - no response - perhaps some front of house training is needed. I know that I sound like i'm moaning but we did have a nice break, the hotel could have been better though - at a cost of £145 for 2 nights I think it was overpriced.

The view from our room was amazing and the size of the room was great. Very comfortable bed and we liked the full size TV. The staff were friendly and helpful. The location of the hotel was excellent. Although the hotel is a lovely old building, the decor in the rooms is tired and needs updating. The bathroom was clean but also needs money spending on it as it was quite basic and very tired. There were no towel rails which was a bit of a problem as the towels had to be stacked on the floor.

Mainly location, the hotel bedrooms would benefit from a refurbishment as would the exterior. The windows and balcony although having a spectacular outlook were grimey. The breakfast was acceptable .

Position. Parking. Close to town/walks. Good roads close by to various locations. Lively in evenings. Good Wines for not too much money. Fabulous veranda with wonderful views over river Wye. Hotel inexpensive. Bedding/Towels very good and regularly changed. Tea and coffee in room. Meals not expensive plenty of choice. Sunday Lunch Very Poor. Breakfast too much bread with everything-stodgy- just come back from continetal trip, Bread abroad is fab so light.. I would liked to have seen waiting staff in better quality/fitting tunics/uniform. Outside of hotel needs painting. Painting of outside hotel would benefit from a more up to date colour scheme. Painting inside hotel, plus bedrooms. Our bathroom had no towel rail you could see where there used to be one. Hotel worn round the edges, but it is over a hundred years old. Hotel in beautiful position. I suppose Ross on Wye could do with an update-which is a shame it has everything to make an up market town.

Location, views across the river Wye. Beds and pillows very comfortable. Hotel has lots of character. Food reasonably priced with good offers. Checking in at reception was very informal, as in "rooms top of the stairs and turn left" No welcome or information about the Hotel or offer to take luggage, just told information is" written on the back " when handed our key.Not welcoming at all. Poor service in the bar area tables not cleared, having to eat with previous diners crockery and glasses on the tables. Tables not wiped dirty cutlery. Staff training needed in customer service.

I liked it's location, the restaurant and bar area and the outside seating area looking out on lovely views. Food was lovely and good value for money. As a single traveller. I was put in a small room. I was paying quite a lot of money. This room was small , with a small window. When I walked in it felt oppresive. I asked to be moved and was given another room.

perfect location ;staff very attentive the view in room 50 could have been so much better if those enormous conifers outside were taken down .they had no purpose whatsoever being as large as they were .they only inhibited a fantastic oppotunity to enhance the fantastic view you have there .a lost oppotunity if this is not actioned.

The bed! It was really comfy and I slept like a log. The location was lovely too. Despite comments below it was good value - £45 for a single room. The breakfast experience - the cooking was not the best, and the second day we ate in the bar as it was just past 10 - the service (by a man) was surly and uncaring, the food took ages, they had run out of croissants and it was altogether not a good experience. Have had much better breakfasts at all you can eat places. Also the bar rooms were quite dark and gloomy, we ate a late meal on the first night and my daughter arrived just after 10 and the food had stopped being served. There were no lifts and I had to search for someone to carry my heavy case up and down stairs - it was not offered.

Access to the Wye Valley and convenient access from the road without negotiating the one way system. Views from terrace bar were excellent. whilst the menu had variety, the cooking varied from very ordinary to extremely poor. this included breakfast and evening meals we had. Despite not having a radiator on and having the window open all the time, the room was uncomfortably hot at night in early April. All that heat came from the hot water pipes.

The Staff were generally helpful and pleasant and the breakfasts were very good. At dinner the staff were a bit clueless, delivering a bottle of wine without opening it!

We celebrated my husbands 60th birthday at The Royal with another 8 friends, the staff were helpful and polite, the Superior room was very good, the linen was clean and fresh and the views were spectacular, the room was kept nice and warm. The bar area was clean and warm with a lovely warm open fire and spectacular views, the bar staff were excellent. The lack of a small fridge for drinks/milk, the lack of complimentary bubble bath etc in the superior rooms plus the poor quality loo paper!

The location is great, the views superb, a lovely old building with large comfortable room, great breakfast, nice staff. We loved the Hotel and had a good deal on the price, we would definitely use again. The food was acceptable, not gourmet, at the better end of pub grub.

It is not a corporate style characterless hotel with identikit rooms. Each room is different. the whole place is a little quirky. Lovely vews from some of the rooms.Substantial breakfast - I especially enjoy the smoked salmon and scrambled eggs. Some of the decor and carpets, especially in corridors is in need of some refurbishment.
