Mercure Exeter Southgate Hotel is located in central Exeter, with views over the historic old cathedral. It offers a health and fitness centre with an indoor swimming pool and a gym.
Score from 775 reviews Very good
Just 4 minutes’ walk from Exeter Cathedral, The White Hart Hotel by Marston's Inns provides en suite accommodation in the city centre. There is a bar and restaurant and free parking and Wi-Fi.

The location The actual look of the hotel
Need more staff the girl on reception was run off her feet phone was constantly ringing No one answered the room service tel no The sink in our room very small Would be nice if there was a sitting room where you could sit down only one in reception
Location is great Great restaurant in the hotel and many in the area Place is quite old, but historic
Some bits are slightly worn out It was a bit of a hassle to get around with our pushchair, with narrow corridors etc.
Comfy bed good decor and a central location for a few pounds more than a brand hotel
Poor reviews of the breakfast put us off trying it f
Centrally located with views of the cathedral Lovely breakfast
No parking at all.... Nearest carpark across town. Room was so small even for a double room.
Friendly staff Spacious room
Fairly old hotel so you could hear noise such as plumbing (water), I also do not like the fact two single beds were pushed together to make one. Real lack of sockets to charge phones, etc.
The location of this hotel was perfect for us, with parking nearby at a fair cost. Easy walk around the city centre with plenty of cafes bars and restaurants.
Sorry, but we found the bathroom (room 304) badly designed. Shelf above basin badly positioned, good size shower but better with sliding screen as floor was wet after use. Stand alone bath wobbly. Huge, very comfortable bed though!
My room was clean, comfortable and spacious. The hotel is in the centre of Exeter and is very conveniently sityated for a host of near by shops, resturants and bars. It took me about 15 minutes to walk from Exeter St David Station. There were good tea and coffee making facilities in the room and complimentary bottled water. I was on a room only booking basis which was very good value for money.
I did eat breakfast on the second morning this was £11.00 for a full english which was ok nothing worth writing home about. There were plenty of cafes nearby which I am sure would offer better value and quality
The staff were very friendly and helpful. we had a young child with us, and the extra bed was setup for us without a hassle. The room was lovely. The location for shopping, eating and site seeing is excellent.
* the bed a little too soft for my taste * the humidity from the bathroom was a little too high - and probably needed some type of quick exhaust i am just mentioning these as points to improve, as the didn't impact us.
The view was spectacular. Beautiful building.
Not a great night's sleep as fan/ vent in bathroom kept me awake.
This is a lovely hotel nice and clean and a central location to all shops restaurants. Staff were friendly. Bed was very comfortable.
The pillows were very uncomfortable!
View of Cathedral.
Having to walk quite a long way with suitcases. Then finding the car park we were in wasn't the correct one having paid for 24hours. Restaurant not open on Sunday evenings, the one night we were there although we had made a booking. Walk back to car with suitcases in the morning.
But there are things that need doing like alarm in room instead of getting a call no shower door Toilet rolls in wrong place bar not open for residents early enough like bars on Sunday would like more room for clothes
If you want to be in the heart of Exeter with a great view of the cathedral our room at the front of this hotel could not be beaten. The staff on reception and in the bar were great. The room was clean, comfortable and well-equipped, although rather small for a long stay. We did not have breakfast so cannot comment on that.
Great location for exploring Exeter Fantastic room interior
Our room at the back of the hotel had noisy airconditioning vents right outside window
Had a great meal at the Michael Caines restaurant - attentive staff & reasonably good value for money considering the quality. Afterwards, enjoyed the bar with the extensive list of innovative cocktails. Location is very central too.
Hotel experience was bad from arrival. Staff said that didn't have booking & room key was faulty, although this seems to be the norm! Room 216 had hardly any natural light, noisy kitchen fan outside & very warm so had to put on even noisier aircon. Bathroom was ok, but sink was blocked & bath towel was soiled. Also, pretty pathetic tv size and tea/coffee facilities considering usual price of room!
Location and staff
Room was hot
Location, staff, breakfast, room, atmosphere
Room too warm overnight and couldn't turn the A/C down further than 17degs
Cheap last-minute room at 48% off - wonderful value for money. Location excellent, completely central, right next to the Cathedral . Fair Trade coffee in rooms, including decaf coffee (so often missing). So glad to see an ethical brand like Cafe Direct rather than having to drink Nescafe. Also a very good selection of teas - earl grey, camomile, green tea, breakfast tea. Biscuits were also good quality. Bed was very warm and comfortable and room was clean.
Bathroom was clean and mostly fine, but a bit awkward in some ways. Taps oddly positioned (sideways on, with the hot tap on the far side) so a bit fiddly to turn on. Shower leaked all over the bathroom floor during use, there was no way to stop this or mop it up properly so it made it a little difficult to visit the bathroom again after showering without getting wet feet/socks! On the plus side, the soap and shampoo were good quality, and the shower was hot and powerful (lovely) so I could forgive its leakiness.
The character of the hotel and the helpfulness of the staff.
I felt totally claustrophobic. The first room was dungeon-like with only a small window that opens to aircon condensers outside. We were forced to use air conditioners all the time because of the noise. We requested for a change. The second room faces a lovely park but there was literally only room for 1 person to walk sideways around the bed. Mattresses were uncomfortable as they slope on the sides.
A stunning view of the cathedral from our room was wonderful. We also had the biggest bed I've ever seen. It was an easy walk to everything. I never wanted to leave.
Service in the hotel restaurant was lacking and the food was pricey. After the first day we found great places to eat at a short distance away. Highly recommend the "Cote" a few doors down. They serve an excellent dinner at lower prices before 7:00 pm. A local shopkeeper turned us on to it.
Our room faced the Cathedral and we were ideally located to explore the city of Exeter. Staff was helpful, courteous and they greeted us warmly knowing that we were there celebrating a special occasion. Comfortable room and bed.
Lift was not always available.
The position of the hotel was magical, and the staff always charming and helpful. Delicious dinner in the restaurant, beautifully served in pleasant, busy surroundings.
We felt that the hotel was battling with the wonderful bits of old world that it had (the non-self closing lift doors for instance)and the sloping floors: two trips up the stairs to find the lift door open, and a tumble in the night down an unmarked step in the middle of the bedroom. (Health & Safety not visited Exeter yet?) Neither of us (fit) retired folk could exit the bath without help. A fixed half screen across a small bath made it impossible, and there were no hand grips on the wall.
Nice location on the cathedral green
The view The historical aspect The central location The big bed
No parking The GPS took us as far as it could but then we were stranded. Fortunately, a near by hotel helped up out and let us park in their carpark for 10 pounds
Surprised breakfast was not included
