The closeness to the city centre Management need to take a good look at the running of this hotel. We would give no more than 1 star rating. The bathroom wasn't cleaned properly, teacups had tide marks in them, and we have been offered accor membership several times because we often stay at their hotels but I will recommend they take this one of their list. Also we waited twenty minutes for bar and food service so went down the road for tea where the staff and service put mercure's to shame. At breakfast we were seated by a bland unsmiling staff member. She could have asked if we would like tea or toast or explained breakfast routine but just walked off. Parking was well away from hotel and no advice or offer to assist with baggage. In today's competitive age this hotel needs to get it's act together.

Character of the hotel, many of the staff friendly Parking - Needed to stop outstand with hazard lights on and drop off luggage. My father, who is 82, then had trouble getting help taking the bags to the room. Rooms were very hot and no facility to cool them. Bed was very soft and uncomfortable. Considerable amount of dust, which triggered alergies. No free internet in room, which meant sitting in the bar on Saturday night Breakfast - generally good, but waitress did not provide milk for the tea,. Overall visit was well below expectations

It was in a very convenient location Our room in the annexe was bad. We discovered at bedtime that one of the curtains was broken and we had to try and drape it over a chair but still got too much light in. The room was not very clean. The upholstery was worn off the chair. The bathroom was very bleak. The kettle wasn't clean. It was very noisy. We tried to rest in the afternoon and staff were shouting and cleaning floors with a power water spray which made a hugh racket. Noisy deliveries began at 7 a.m. It was a lousy way to celebrate my husband's birthday and we won't eb staying at a Mercure hotel again.

The historical nature of the hotel and the town centre location. The trouser press collapsed, the iron did not work, the mini bar was faulty and the bed was uncomfortably soft.

Location was good and ambience of outside was good. We had a room that was not up to par. It did have a king size bed which we requested but bore no resemblance to an antique room with four poster bed etc. - holes in carpet - very sparse and furniture looked dirty - claustrophobic and had a mildewy smell. Wouldn't return.

Very convenient central location and always a good hotel in which to stay and visit the RSC. Staffing levels this time seemed to be on the low side and the bar was not up to its usual standard. Food and meal service was very good. Decor in the bedroom could do with an upgrade, otherwise we enjoyed our stay and will be returning later in the year. The car parking charge was not indicated in the price when we booked and this should be made much clearer for visitors.

Very convenient location and a nice room with a good-sized bathroom. Fittings in the room were a little shabby - the chair had a noticeable stain on it, and the carpet was not the cleanest I've seen. Also, the bathroom was very cold.

The hotel was smart and clean and our room was very well equipped and comfortable for an overnight stay. Our room was rather small and would not have been appropriate for a stay of longer than one night.

Town centre location. Staff were all pleasent and efficient. Hotel was clean and tidy and decor was to a high standard Hotel car park was difficult to locate on arrival. I had to go in and enquire directions to gain access. Note - this comment is my observation, not a criticism!

I've stayed here 4 times now. I love the location, the olde worlde charm. It's lovely! The room was a little noisy but it was on the front of the hotel and I stayed on a Friday night. The noise was to be expected!

The location of ths hotel was great; right in the centre of town. The bathroom in the room was very modern and finished to a high standard. The hotel was more than sufficient for our needs (pre-Christmas get away), however I would definitely not describe the hotel as 4 star. Whilst the bathrooms were excellent, the rooms were not finished to the same standard, with handles missing on drawers and a wardrobe that wouldn't close to name a couple. Whilst none of these minor things spoilt our time here, they are certainly not the standards of a 4 star hotel, in my opinion. All in all, we got a great deal so the price did also not reflect 4 star standards, but had I have paid a more expensive rate, I would definitely have been more disappointed.

Get some more staff who speak or at least understand English. Really disappointed, had much higher expectations, a Premier Inn I stayed at the week before put this hotel to shame.
