The staff were lovely and breakfast was nice. Lovely Italian 2 minutes walk away My husband and I booked to stay here for 2 nights however checked out after 1 night and booked into the local Holiday Inn. The staff were lovely and breakfast was good however the room was appalling! Nothing like the pictures. The shower was more of a dribble of water, tiny dirty bathroom, toilet wouldnt flush and when it did,it made a loud rattling noise, the room was dirty, creaky floorboard, filthy carpet, bed uncomfortable and decor circa 1950'S. I would not recommend that anyone stay here! More of a grotty bedsit! We paid for 2 nights but could not stay more than one! Staff were lovely so didnt even want to complain to them. Really really bad! So noisy at night too. Ended up paying over £100 for 1 night in this horrid "hotel"..!!

good breakfast the hotel is shabby and in need of a makeover the lift was not working and we had to lug our cases up to the third floor by ourselves the bathroom was made from a corridor attached to the room. I dont think that it is worth the rac 2star rating.Even the taxi drivers laugh when you say that you are staying there.

We used this hotel as a convenient stop over before sailing from Southampton Port. For this purpose the Star Hotel was ideal, the room was comfortable clean and spacious and the reception staff were very helpful with advice and transfer arrangements. We did not use the dining facilities, so cannot comment on them. The night we stayed (Sunday of a Bank Holiday weekend), was warm and we had our windows open. There were a few times we were woken by loud voices passing and the odd siren, but what can you expect when in the centre of a City.

This hotel is horrible, because in general it's very old and untidy. Their rooms are dirty. They don't worry to the maintenance. The breakfast is normal. In the bath room the water hasn't pressure. In my opinion the hotel was very bad.

The hotel looks really old and outdated. Parking was full and I had to park on the street, which is free during the night but not during the day. The area is quite noisy at night, because of the bars and pubs nearby.

this hotel needs a complete upgrade on the exterior .the new rooms are ok, but some of the older rooms need an upgrade.great location for the ports and ferrys but very dissappointed with the general state of the hotel. t.v.s. are very dated. plugs in awkward places. no hairdryer available. shower rooms very small.

The location is excellent, staff were friendly and helpful. We didn't have the breakfast due to other commitments during our stay but it looked and smelled good. Our room was clean and a decent size and although we both thought the bed was too soft we actually slept very well. The free wi-fi came in handy, too. Looked at as a budget hotel in a central location, The Star is fine and I would definitely consider staying here again. The Star could really do with some money being spent on it - all the fixtures and fittings look a bit 'tired'. The façade, particularly, looks tatty. We were prepared to ignore the peeling paint, cracks in the walls and sun-bleached carpets but other guests may be more particular about their surroundings. There was some noise from nearby bars/clubs, but this is a city centre hotel so that's to be expected. It seemed to quiet down early enough for us to get a decent night's sleep, at least. One minor gripe was having to hand the key in when we went out - coming back late we had to wait quite a while for the person on reception to come back to the desk and give us our key.

I've done a lot of travelling around the world over the years - so my review is based on my experience of this Hotel, when compared to the service and facilities I have experienced elsewhere. Normally I wouldn't bother writing a bad review of a Hotel - but for this experience, I'm making an exception. I recently booked The Star Hotel as I was in town visiting family and wanted somewhere comfortable, reasonably priced and in a central location. On the site, the pictures looked basic but comfortable - and the price per night was good - so I booked it. However, on arrival - my experience of the reality was very different. Although I was met by the reception with efficiency, I was not assisted with my luggage in any way to my room - which was up three small flights of stairs and through several fire doors. A small thing, but important when you're travelling on your own with a huge suitcase. One of those 'finishing touches' if you like to your first experience of a Hotel. On finally finding my room, I was met with a single bed that was jammed right in front of the door. After navigating my way around this, I was disappointed and shocked to see the room I was allocated. It bore NO resemblence whatsoever to the pictures on line. There was no natural light in the room other than a small ceiling window which made the room really dark. I felt like I'd just checked into a cupboard - and an univiting cupboard at that! The room was in serious need of a good refurbishment - with cracked walls and a bathroom that looked dark, dated, pokey and run down and with what I think was the smallest shower I have ever seen. Don't get me wrong - I'm OK with basic facilities for an overnight stay - but there's basic - and then there's basic! At the very least, when you book into a Hotel, you look for something that is inviting, clean and comfortable. This was none of these things.

The staff were absolutely wonderful, nothing was too much trouble. Loved the olde world look of the hotel and its location is great. The food is fresh, hot and plentiful. Thanks for a great stay!!! Only comment to make is that the "smoking" rooms and hallways are in need of decorating but the new parts are in keeping with the style of the hotel. The outside needs improving too but once inside, the staff are faultless.

I Liked the fact that Princess Victoria stayed there in 1830...!! and I like to be in the centre of a city to get the feel of the place. Wanted to shop next day with daughter, and have dinner with son who is in merchant navy nearby....and I am an antique dealer so I like old buildings and traditonal places. Bit too warm for comfort, especailly in the dining room

We thought the staff were excellent and very helpful. Room 41 was warm light and clean. The breakfast was excellent The decor in most of the building needs some tlc and the furniture in the dining room, especially the chairs, were rocky and loose, making them rather unsafe!

The location was superb - very central for shopping and close to the Solent University to visit my eldest daughter. The receptionist was very helpful, and upgraded our rooms when we asked. We felt that the hotel was very dated and shabby - a not very pleasant smell pervaded the common areas. The showers did not work properly, and the telephones in the rooms did not work at all. Breakfast was pretty good, but cleared away the minute the clock struck 10.00 am , meaning we had to ask for orange juice etc to be put back out! Would not return.

The staff as always are wonderful, I talked to the manageress and told her this when I arrived on Friday afternoon and I was very pleased to be able to pass on my views the breakfast too was excellent although I had been celebrating my birthday so wasn't able to eat as much as usual!!! It was very fresh as always and nicely topped up (some hotels don;t do this and it looks a bit mean and shabby)
