The food. The hotel was extremely disappointing. It was very cold. Although there was a log fire it was never lit early enough to warm the area. The only easy chairs were in the entrance area which was never warm. Our ensuite was a very dated 1960s type pink suite. We were not provided with a bath mat. Although we used our drinking glasses they were never washed. The hair dryer did not work. My sister's single room had a shower cubicle with inadequate curtain so the floor got very wet and as she had no bathmat she just left her towel on the floor after she dried herself to soak up the water. There was insufficient staff but they were friendly. The whole place seemed to be run on a shoestring with little thought of pleasing the guests.

1) Excellent location and views 2) Very helpful friendly staff 3) Food at breakfast and evening bar meals very good/excellent 4) Good value. 1) I have just one comment which I did not raise with any of the staff, this is as follows; In general the hotel looks a little run down and looks much the same as it did 8 years ago, however, I was informed on my visit that there will be some renovation work. This is fine, provided it does not have a negative impact on the character of the place. NB:- We intend to return, sometime later this year or early next year.

Beautiful view from main reception and dining rooms. Lovely aged trees growing in grounds. Close to main roads for exploring this area of Scotland. The accomodation is need of an upgrade to bring it to the standard expected in a country house hotel.

If you are looking for a nice relaxing place to visit with beautiful views, friendly staff and fabulous cooking this is the place to stay. We loved our stay here and cant wait to go back. The place has a lot of charm and character and is currently getting some modernisation work done, we will look forward to our next visit to see how its coming along although we like the place as it is too. Thanks to the all the staff especially Sharon. The meals were truly fantastic best we have had anywhere for ages. Castle Douglas is with in walking distance and a lovely town to visit with great shops. So we highly recommend Urr Valley. I think some of the previous reviews are a bit uncalled for and they did nearly put us off booking to be honest but we were pleasantly surprised and very happy we did book.

Helpful staff, great breakfasts, budget price, lovely countryside, peaceful location. Watching the birds on the birdfeeder outside our bedroom window. Made up for not having the view at the front which we had asked for on the phone. The rooms were cold when we arrived for the first night but heating was put on when we mentioned the problem. Mother's room was not made up the first morning - we had to ask for the room to be done, I.E. bed to be made and towels changed. Our room not made up second morning - I.E. bed not made but towels had been left aside on bunk beds for us. Problem with the plumbing. Had to get the maintenance man to turn off the shower - which was too stiff. Eventually got the hang of it. Asked for 2 rooms with a view on the phone when prebooking, but was given 2 roooms downstairs facing the back/side of the building.

We liked the area and the ability to visit many of the places in the Dumfries and Galloway, both sporting and historical. The food was very good with lots of choice, always well served and hot. The hotel was average in its decor and service, also we had no hot water in our bedroom until the last evening of our break. When we received our bill they had made a very small deduction.

Good friendly staff who were very willing to help on any questions. Meals were piping hot and freshly made and there was plenty of variety. Large portions would be an understatement. Having been a local lad many moons ago and having been to a wedding there years ago I was disappointed to see that although the rooms were clean the decor is in real need of an upgrade. The plumbing also needs looking at as the hot water was intermittent and the water pressure is very low. I would not let that put me off booking agin though.

The food was excellent, much above a normal hotel dining room, yet hardly expensive. All dishes were good including delicious poached haddock, but the stuffed pork sliced thickly and served with two apple fritters was particularly memorable, as was the haggis served with my traditional Scottish breakfast the following morning. A friend joined me for Sunday lunch and expressed similar sentiments. The pressure in the hot water system seemed to vary, causing the shower temperature to zoom up and down as (presumably) other guests switched on and off. A thermostatic shower control would have prevented me having to leap out of the way rather suddenly.

The location of this country hotel is excellent. Our room was spacious. The ambience of the public areas was very nice and very much in keeping with a country house style hotel. The log fire in the cool mornings and evening in the bar was very wecoming. We ate both breakfast and dinner at the hotel and the food was excellent and also reasonably priced. Would certainly go back to this hotel.
