The King James by Thistle107 Leith Street, New Town, EH1 3SW Edinburgh (Show map) Very good, Score from 778 reviews“The hotel was really nice. The location was excellent. The Reception staff were very welcoming and the staff in general were courteous, friendly and exceedingly helpful. No matter how many words I use I could never praise the staff enough. Very efficient check in, superbly placed for shops and central Edinburgh. Room tidy and clean - able to control temperature of room easily. Very close to airport connecting buses and mainline station, easy to get taxis and close enough to walk to central Edinburgh highlights - you can walk into John Lewis shopping centre via a direct link from the hotel (not even stepping outside!). Excellent value for money and would certainly stay again.

The convenience of being so close to the centre of the city and within a shopping centre. Bus route at the door The heat of the rooms on the road side and our daughter stayed on the other side of the hotel and was disturbed every night by chavs on the roof of the shopping centre. The staff were took several nights to finally sort out the problem

We visited the King James Hotel as it was very central to allow us to be very near a wedding reception, in another Hotel nearby. The room we were allocated was excellent,as far as comfort & facilities in fact a suite with its own lounge area, separate generous sized bedroom & private facilities which included a walk in shower, which we had specifically requested, due to one of the party, who has personal difficulties in using a bath. This was the one area that let the Hotel down, see full detail below: The walk in shower had what appeared to be mould around the tiling, also the shower head. The ceiling area & vent was black, therefore what was a very comfortable & well fitted room, was totally spoilt by this situation.

quality of food Hotel relies heavily on party bookings. This affects the dining room service. The dininng room staff on duty on several occasion were not sufficient to cater for large parties all sitting at one time. Parties appeared to get preferential service over other guests.

We requested a room with wheelchair access. Were given a purpose-built twin bedded room with loads of space, hard wood floor, wet room shower and all the aids a person in a wheelchair needs. Brilliant! Reception and bar/restaurant staff were cheerfully helpful despite it being the busiest time of year for Edinburgh. Excellent location for shopping and site-seeing, with direct links to the King James Mall and John Lewis. We were there at Edinburgh Festival/Military Tattoo time so the hotel was very busy. Naturally, many customers want to eat dinner early before going on to a show. With the restaurant not opening until 6.30pm there was a crush and food delays in the bar. Opening the restaurant earlier on such occasions would help relieve the pressure on the bar.

The room is quite comfortable and clean. Staff is gentle and helpful. Its location is faboulous: you go walking from rail station (be carefull not carrying too heavy suitcases!); the bus station is few blocks far; you can walk till the main attractions; there is a shopping bellow the hotel and many big stores in the surroundings. Summing up: a very good choice!

The location is terrific--five minutes from the Georgian glories of the New Town, ten minutes stroll from the Royal Mile. The hotel is spotlessly clean, thestaff are efficient and friendly.Highly recommended. I thought the prices exacted for telephone calls were excessive.

good location Arrived at hotel at 2pm,4 adults, 2 rooms were booked, was informed by receptionist check in time was 2.30pm.We were then told our rooms would not be ready at 2.30pm and asked if we could return later possibly an hour or so and rooms would be ready for us.We accepted this and came back at 4.10pm.On arriving at the hotel for the second time,we asked if our rooms were ready, the team leader receptionist continued to answer phone calls and rudely ignored us,only to be told our rooms were yet again unavailable.By this time I was upset and asked for the duty manager,we were told to take a seat and 20 minutes later the duty manager arrived to talk with us.He was understanding and compassionate and and offered us an acceptable gesture of goodwill. We were finally given rooms at 5.40,which I feel was unacceptable and rude,I will not return to this hotel again!

Location was very good, room was warm a good size and comfortable Breakfast was from 7am to 11am, however, the food appeared to be have been sitting under the hot lamps sice 7am so it was dry, tasteless and in most cases inedible, thankfully there was fruit and cereak available as alternative. i would ot include breakfast again if i stayed here

Good central location. Good value for money. Pleasant room. Hotel guide said BBC radio was available on the TV. We couldn't find it. Asked at Reception and not given the correct information - it did not seem to be available at all on any channel. Scottish breakfast (£10) interestingly did not include porridge - I had to ask for it, but they did make me some for no extra charge.

The services of the hotel were a nightmare for me especially the staff at the front desk, although not all but this is not a service that a four star hotel suppose to provide! The staff at the front desk shall have sufficient knowledge and ready to help the foreign customer like me, if not at least they will ask other co-worker for the information! Remember I was there on the new year day where the shops were all closed, my phone was not working properly and so does the Internet connection on my iPad! I was kind of helpless and trying to get my family to phone me while I was in the hotel's room, I asked the front desk staff for the hotel phone's number which my family can phone me from oversea, he gave me the 0800 number of the hotel with an uncertain voice, where my husband has tried several times but could not get through the line, I asked again the staff from the front desk, this time I spoke to a lady staff, which I need to pay compliments to her that she offered me a lot of helps especially when she knew my situation, this time I have got the right phone number, I.E. the number which my family is able to reach me! But I just wonder, why he did not asked his co- worker for information at the first place if he was not certain but gave me a wrong information instead! Secondly, my husband tried to phone me the next morning when I was asleep and I didn't pick up the phone until the line has been cut off, my husband phoned me the 2nd time without knowing that I was asleep, the lady staff from the front desk (she looks like she is a senior staff at the hotel) told my husband that I did not pick up the phone with a raising voice and shown impatient to my husband's phone call, my husband was surprise that she is the staff of a four star hotel... This is absolutely unacceptable services that a reputated hotel like thistle that would have provided!

Excellent Hotel to stay in the City Centre of Edinburgh. The hotel staff was very helpful, I booked two double rooms for my parents, me and my gf. My father has a disability and there was a hotel disabled car space just in the entrance of the hotel which I used. Very Convenient. Very luxurious rooms, clean and tidy with a good view. In addition, from the third floor of the hotel where the restaurant is located there is an exit directly to the Shopping Centre. Very satisfied with the overall stay.

Price and location was very good, clean comfortable rooms. Had requested early check in, arrived at 1pm but rooms weren't ready. Requested rooms together as travelling with mother-in law who is 81, this didn't happen either, so it was quite dissapointing. Tried to put drinks on room bill but told we couldn't do this as we hadn't given our cc details, we had but apparently we should have asked at reception to allow us to charge to our room! Most unusual, Apart from that overall we had a pleaseant stay.
