Lovely old hotel in a central location. Public areas are comfortable and relaxing and staff are friendly and helpful. Rooms are reasonably well appointed and clean, the beds comfortable and the central heating adequate.
TV was very small and too far from the bed for comfortable viewing. Took some time to get it to work. The WiFi seemed patchy, maybe it was me but I seemed to have to keep logging in as it didn't stay connected.
Room was nice, clean but a bit small for two people. If was on my own would have been fine.
Double bed was quite small, should really be listed as a large single person room.
Location was good and allowed easy access into the town.
As you walk into the hotel, you are met with a overwhelming smell of either air freshener or something like furniture polish. This does not disappear and the staff who state they are used to it don't really do anything to change this. Quite the opposite! Whilst sitting in the bar area there are staff who are continuously cleaning around you. The smell of polish and the smell of the vacuum cleaner is absolutely discussing. We had to leave the area at around 8.30pm and retire to our room. This is not a place you can relax in and I advise anyone who has an allergy or breathing difficulty to stay clear of this hotel. We had a meal in the bar area prior to this. I ordered Rib eye steak and was presented with a cheap rump cut. I notified the staff and they took it away. They returned with the exact same piece of meat they had taken away, that had been re-heated…..needless to say, I sent this back and went without. The bed is very uncomfortable and was two single beds pushed together. We will not be returning to this hotel.
Queuing /slow Check in
Comfy bed, and quiet despite bring right opposite Central Station
location, at heart of Exeter, near shops, restaurants, and cultural spots, as well as University where daughter studying. parking quiet room staff free wifi
beer quality food could be better bar closed at lunchtime/no environment being charged extra for breakfast no newspaper offered no fresh milk in room for tea wet bathroom floor broken bulb in bathroom mirror light bed very hard, and pillows lacked support
Late night bar on room service Clean Friendly Staff - Reception lady was particularly lovely Comfortable Great power shower Go to Las Iguanas for Tapas down the road Free wifi always a bonus
Got a bit panicky when the shower didn't get hot, fear not, it just took a minute or 2 to warm up.
Splendid Hotel with fast free wifi and the great city centre location
Didnt realise there was an £8 car park charge and thought breakfast was included (cost £10 each)
Perfect location Very friendly staff
smustytaff were friendly and helpful
musty smell in dining room which put us off having breakfast.
The bathroom was quite bad, I refused to use the shower as the shower head was filthy and there was a lot of mould around the tray and on the tiles
Comfy bed clean room Lovely breakfast
bit noisy on inside rooms till about midnight with window open, kitchen extractors I think. Started up again about 6am. carpets and furniture a bit tatty TV only worked on unit not remote and no I.T. functions
I liked the location and 'grand' nature of the hotel. The room was ideal - clean and comfortable. Staff were friendly and helpful/ It is moments from the city centre.
Very close to Exeter Central Station Very helpful and friendly staff, very clean and well maintained. Only stayed two nights but wish we had stayed a week! Our opinions are based on a well travelled couple, both in the UK and internationally for business and pleasure!
You have'nt seen the last of us and sorry, can't help you with this section!
The room was too hot and paying for parking
Very standard kind of hotel, was trying to be something it wasn't but it was good enough.
The million flights of stairs which was apparently "Floor 3" The staff on the reception had the handbook out whilst checking me in, not that i had a problem with someone learning it was just it was right in my face and very unprofessional, the staff seemed to think it was more of a laugh than an actual job on the night shift.
Staff all very welcoming and polite. Hotel architecture outstanding. Cleanliness excellent. Rooms excellent. Good to have free WIFI.
Full English breakfast very good but could have been hotter! DIY toaster slow and took three times before it was browned to our liking. It would be an improvement if toast was brought to the table along with the coffee from the kitchen.
Greeting from Rosa, Birthday card and chocolates. Nice room but some things needed replacing. I.e. hole in net curtains.
Disturbed sleep from air con/refrigeration unit/ Paying to park.
The location and the price. On site car parking
The decor was rather plain. Bathroom not particularly inviting. The room was cold, and staff gave us an electric heater which solved the problem
Big bed in room and having a bath as well as shower was lovely.
To arrive and be told to park in the car park would be a charge of an additional £8 per night was disgusting. on the information we were told that the car parking was limited so it is a first come bases! no where said you have to pay to park your car to stay in their hotel. Also breakfast is an additional charge of £10 per person if you want it in your room it is £14.95 per person but beware in small print you have to pay £5 for the tray!!! what a joke. I feel I paid enough for my stay without the extras. We are attending a wedding in March and needed to book 4 rooms but with all the extras it would be too much so definitely not staying at the Thistle and will not recommend it to other guests either.
The staff try hard
A bit faded
The location and meals
staff Lunch tray laying at the corridor until next morning
Staff very pleasant but extremely amateurish.
Beds, pillows, curtains. No soap or other necessities for bathroom. No mini bar. No reply from room service on two occasions that I tried. Lack of parking.
Most things been coming 26 years. Super location & nice hotel.
The usual £5 tray charge which meant I got a takeaway when otherwise I would have used room service.
Hotel character Friendly helpful staff Good breakfast choice and quality
Average dinner menu Cosy double too small bed against wall impractical and felt too claustrophobic
