The basic double room was perfectly adequate although a few touches, such as bedside table lamps and a comfortable headboard, were missing thus giving a rather stark atmosphere. The staff were friendly and amenable and were happy to show us round their more superior rooms so we would know what to book on our next stay. One day, we hope to stay in an hotel where the bath is not designed for dwarves! The food and service were of a good standard. The entrance lobby was attractively decorated and the bars and restaurant were well presented. We weren't keen on the piped music at breakfast or in the lobby - all a bit 'in your face' and not something we welcome early in the morning! The rooms prepared for Christmas parties seemed to be beautifully done.

Very good location close to the centre of the city. Quiet room. Comfortable bed. Decor is fine. The room should have been a bit warmer. It was a long room with only one modest radiator at one end. There was no heating in the bathroom, which was poor. The heated towel rail was switched off. When I asked about this at reception, I was told all the towel rails had been switched off as there had been complaints of guest (s) who had burned themselves on them. My response to this is that a four star hotel needs to replace them immediately and get the bathrooms warmed up. There is no rack to rest your case on, and yet there is more than enough space to put one in - again a weakness in a four star hotel.

The room was spotlessly clean The room not being ready for check in at 14:30. Tired furnishings in the room. A sprung and creaky floorboard. A communicating door with the next room which was not soundproofed in any way. A false fire alarm activation at 04.00 hrs and again at 08:20. No hot water or heating from 04:00 onwards. No response on the day from the Guest Relations Manager. Smokers allowed to congregate outside the main entrance of the hotel. Smoke drift back into lobby which smelled strongly of cigarette smoke.

Very comfy bed We had an extra single bed in our room which took up a lot of space and made moving around the room a bit of a pain.

We had stayed there a couple of years ago when it was being refurbished and enjoyed the stay. The location was the main factor it is close to the shops.

Friendly and helpful staff. Its location is perfect for visiting the center of Exeter. Very good english breakfast! The fact that there was no adapter available at the reception desk for loading my i-phone and using shaver. This question must be asked very often by continental visitors.

This is a very grand hotel, which seems a bit undersold by available publicity. Rooms are generously proportioned, and the public areas are spacious and elegant, and offer a nice taste of the grandeur of an earlier era.

Decor, furnishings, comfortable beds, pleasant room, excellent breakfast, attentive staff. Inadequate parking - we were forced to park elsewhere. This was unsatisfactory due to Exeter's parking restrictions and payment requirements, together with security worries.

Central position. Accessable car park. Large bed. Room described as Deluxe - it was a good sized, comfortable room, but `deluxe` seems a bit of an exaggaration. Shower curtain rather than glass screen. No complementary bottled water.

The staff were extremely helpful without being too forward. This being my first visit to a 'Thistle' Hotel I considered it superior to similiar national hotel groups in all respects. Thistle will now be my first choice if located appropriately. Many Thanks

Very central. Checking in and out is efficient. Clean and generally well looked after Stayed here a number of times but the showers are always an issue. Shower heads are poor and often dont work properly. Water always has to run for several minutes to get full temperature.

Just across from the railway station and central - that's about all. This hotel has no soul. It is cold and unwelcoming. The bar areas are cold and none of the staff seem to have any interest in their guests. Reception is particularly dire - no smiles or welcome. This hotel is for the business person who just want to lay their head down overnight. Don't expect speedy service in housekeeping either. On returning to our room at 1430, it still had not been serviced from when we left at 9am. All in all, a truly depressing experience only brightened up by the superb Italian restaurant just down the road who really know how to look after people!

Location I found the charge of £30 per day in advance of using any of the facilities insulting and not something I have come across in my extensive business travel around the world. Taking credit card details should be enough as I now have to check my credit card statement to make sure that extra money was taken off the bill when I checked out.

Staff very pleasant and helpful. Rooms clean and comfortable. Close to all that Exeter has to offer and also central to use as a base. Would definitely stay again. My husband and I decided to have a meal in Drakes Bar as we had travel from Bedfordshire. The meal was pasta and supposed to be in a creamy sauce. The pasta was over cooked and leathery and the sauce non existent. My husbands sauce (a different one) was also dry. Staff deducted my meal from the bill and most apologetic. Such a shame as we had been told by a guest that it was normally lovely. Maybe an off night. Also was woken up at 5.30am with delivery trucks.

Beautiful hotel inside and out, in the center of Exeter. Lovely decor and a grand feel you would normally expect in a, more expensive, more rural hotel. Very formal staff, however very professional, helpful and obviously well trained, are a real asset to the hotel. There is a small car park, however they do reserve spaces for non- residents attending functions, so spaces are limited. Arrive early would be my suggestion.
