Score from 363 reviews Very good
It was in a great location situated between Windermere and Bowness, just a short walk from both. Mark and Jane were very friendly and welcoming and the room was spotlessly clean and very warm and comfortable. The breakfast was excellent and there was plenty to eat.
We found it a bit restricting that breakfast was served between 8.30 and 9.00. When you are having a break from work you don't always want to have to get up so early. We felt it was more for the convenience of them than their guests. Also it was difficult having to choose your breakfast the day before as you do not always know what you are going to feel like eating the next morning.
Gracious n helpful host Very filling n varied breakfast Clean n spacious room
Superb english breakfast, very fresh, made from local ingredients. Very friendly staff.
My girlfriend and I stayed here for my birthday getaway. Jane&Mark were very friendly and helpful. They really do go above and beyond their remit to satisfy their customers. Jane is fantastic, her smile is quite infectious...she gave me a cute bday card and even lent us umbrellas and coats when the weather got bad! I'll stay here again when next I visit the Lake District area ...you should too!
That I don't own a home in the area.
The warm welcome you receive from Jane and Mark, the quality of the finishes, the cleanliness and superb breakfast make this one of the best Guest Houses in the UK. Everything for a perfect trip in the Lakes District is provided. Thank you Jane and Mark you've clearly worked hard and I hope you get to enjoy the benefits.
Clean room and good host.
The owners are particularly pleasing and nothing is too much trouble
Staff were helpful with things to do and advice on the local area. Room was spacious and comfortable. Everything was great, would really recommend.
You are required to arrive for breakfast before 9am which isn't ideal if you want a slightly later start. Also the staff felt quite pushy to get us out as fast as possible on the day we left.
Plenty of advise on the surrounding area, very friendly owners, breakfast was excellent, good location with only a 10 minute walk from the lake or Windermere, room was nicely decorated and the bed was extremely comfortable, very enjoyable stay.
we were greeted by Jane who took time to show us various brochures and ideas of things to do ,suggested eateries etc which proved great. our breakfasts were superb our room was spotless and serviced daily it was comfortable just like being at home i would definately recommend Thornbank and will be back to stay when we return to the lakes
The location was perfect, a short walk to Windermere Town, or a short walkt to the lake and excursion boats, very friendly owners, nothing was to much trouble. Would definately return.
No shelf in the shower for soap, hair shampoo etc, and that's the only thing I can complain about. And for myself that's good as I normaly find a lot to complain about in the many hotels/b&bs we visit on our travels
A warm & friendly welcome from jane & mark, comfortable clean room & excellent choice of breakfast, guesthouse is in a great location. would recommend to family & friends.
View of the room near street is good, but a little bit noise when buses and cars passing. Breakfast is OK, but the time is too restricted. The tips provided by house holder is very useful
The room is quite hot at night somehow. So the sleep quality is not very good.
Personal and friendly attention; excellent breakfasts.
Some digital TV channels did not display quality pictures (all BBC channels were OK)
Location was excellent.
The location was spot on and the staff were very attentive
Nothing to complain about!
Lovely welcome. Lots of information. Great breakfast. Central location
Bed not too comfy
great location, good parking, very comfy bed, an excellant breakfast an all grilled.
Jane made sure we had lots of ideas of things to do and even got timetables for the boat and bus out ready for us. She also was able to recommend good places to eat. Very friendly and helpful.
Mark and Jane were very welcoming and pleasant. Jane offered us some good tips for things to do. Loved the walk to Post Knott and the Peak above it and our visit to Blackwell House recommended by Jane.
Having to have breakfast between 08.30 and 09.00 and having to order the night before. We booked a family room for two people as it was difficult to find anything available at the last minute. It was very expensive for what it was. From the reviews I expected more. It was just an ok bed and breakfast and not worth £135.00 a night !!! Probably our fault - but a lesson well learned. Didn't like our very small double bed.
We came back from Thornbank last week after a fantastic long weekend celebrating our 10th Wedding anniversary. It was positioned near to both Windermere and Bowness so going out for dinner and drinks was very easy. Our room was lovely and spacious and breakfast was just lovely. Mark and Jane were very warm and friendly welcoming us and offering lots of help with places to go and places to eat. Thank you so much - Vicky and Chris
The En-suite was spacious and the shower was fantastic. The bed was incredibly comfy and we really enjoyed a good nights sleep. The hotel was a perfect location being only ten minutes from Bowness. The quality of food for breakfast was fantastic and a great way to start your day!!
The room was clean, tidy and beautifully decorated. The en suite was also well maintained, and could not be faulted. Breakfasts were promptly prepared by Mark, and were always to a very high standard with a good choice of menu available. I also sensed that they may be prepared to cater for "one off" items if their workload permitted. The location is well within walking distance of the local attractions, and I have no hesitation in recommending Thornbank, and would not hestitate to stay with Mark and Jane again.
The only not so good experience was getting into and out of the adjacent car park! Reversing uphill through an arch could present some challenges to those not used to driving regularly, or perhaps lacking confidence in close maneuvers!
A very warm welcome and a spotlessly clean room make this guest house an excellent choice. There was a good choice of fruit, yogurt and cereal with the well cooked breakfast. We shall look forward returning.
All of it.
The weather was poor.
