Score from 106 reviews Good
history, castle itself
kind of stuffy atmosphere, staff needs to loosen up, food portions terrible (3 tortellini!!)
The service was amazing and very genuine. Breakfast was outstanding.
Some more history on the venue would have been good. Perhaps even a short tour. It's got an amazing past and feel like we didn't quite appreciate the story the castle could tell the visitors. Only other suggestion is a selection of non-feather pillows.
Love the Tudor castle
We thought the setting and castle were idyllic, plunging us back in time in a very real way. The helpfulness and friendly treatment by the delightful staff enhanced our stay immeasurably. While maintaining Tudor authenticity the castle has been discreetly modernised to a high standard the rooms being comfortable and the bed ensuring a sound night's sleep. We were also able to enjoy walks in the surrounding countryside and got more of a flavour of what it must have been like to live there in 16th century.
The only negative factor of this lovely experience was this: in all the public rooms there was piped music. Granted, it was suitably muted, however, it jarred enormously with the authenticity of the surroundings and the quiet elegance of the stately rooms. Obviously pleasing everyone's musical taste is not possible, but I feel that popular music, some of it vocal, was not the correct choice. It did not have to be Mediaeval or Baroque, but more evocative of the age the Castle is set in. Music appeals to the deeper side of the individual, and here unfortunately it proved invasive. In fact, is there a need for music when the very air breathes Tudor vitality and intrigue?
Everything. We were treated like royalty. Amazing staff, stunning castle full of royal history, spacious suite overlooking the amazing grounds, bed so comfortable you never want to leave. Every detail was perfect. Let's not forget the food- absolute perfection at breakfast, lunch and dinner. Thornbury is run by young, enthusiastic, friendly and professional staff who made our stay such a delight.
That we did not plan to stay longer.
Luxurious historic dreamworld location and facilities. Excellent breakfast. Generally appropriate levels of service except at dinner.
Fawning and ridiculously pretentious waiter at dinner and young assistant waitress who clearly had not the slightest inkling of correct service, bringing the main course before clearing first course plates and trying to push them aside with the hot dinner plates! Their antics spoilt what should be an "occasion", especially at the prices charged. They urgently need some proper training! The meal itself was also disappointing - a strange lamb dish and unappetising grouse.
Driving in all of us did an intake of breath! Inspiring, gorgeous grounds surrounding 16th century history. You feel it everywhere if you have an ounce of imagination. Room was so fun; suite where Henry and Ann stayed while traveling through. Lights at night are both eerie and magical. LOVED IT.
Staff were attentive, friendly and made us feel very welcome from the word go. Rooms were very clean and decor was in keeping with the surroundings. Food was excellent. Overall a very memorable experience!
Breakfast service was a little slower. Didn't offer a full English breakfast.
The gardens were nice, the staff were friendly. We ate breakfast and dinner at the restaurant and the food was were very good, with outstanding service.
We were placed in the topmost suite (classic bedchamber). As we were travelling with a baby, it was a little difficult to carry baby with 2 flights of stairs. The room was smaller than I have pictured based on the internet pictures, The room's entrance was a little low, you have to bend to get in the door. It was a little dangerous as I actually tripped entering the room while carrying the baby. We asked to be moved to another room that would be safer for the baby but unfortunately they weren't able to transfer us.
This place is amazing. We treated ourselves to a night in a castle and this was the highlight of our London trip. Dinner was excellent and staff made us feel very comfortable. The room was more than adequate with a fabulous view from our room to the courtyard the spacious bathroom had all the extras you needed also.
The breakfast service was painfully slow and when received was cold and tasteless the buffet was good but your a hot breakfast lover your out of luck.
upgrade was much appreciated room out of this world and staff were very friendly despite being short staffed and rushed off their feet
service was very slow they were short staffed had to wait over 1/5 for a drink to arrive after chasing staff several times sat down for evening meal at 8pm didn't get our starters until 9.05pm again having to chase staff several times to see whaere it was
The ambiance and decor of the castle was very enjoyable. It was a treat to stay in such an old historic building. Really enjoyed the waffles at breakfast.
Ordered the menu of 2 courses at dinner for 42 pounds but was charged an extra 17 British pounds for the courses my husband chose. Not sure why...
Very friendly staff and fantastic history very comfortable stay.
We're upgraded to fantastic room. The food in the restaurant was very good.
Seems there had been a lot of new staff and they were unfamiliar with routine. Waited for someone to take our order for a pre dinner drink and waiter went away and didn't return, so had to ask someone else.
Beautiful, historical surroundings. Rooms are furnished and cleaned to a high standard. Staff very friendly and helpful.
The service in the restaurant was a little slow but did not mar the visit.
The Castle is beautiful, the rooms amazing and the staff was so helpful and friendly. They even dried our clothes which had been soaked by rain. It's expensive but worth it.
Room Staff Food Location All amazing
Got upgraded to a fantastic suite. Staff very helpful.
The room and gardens were magnificent but that is where this luxury experience ended.
We were so looking forward to our stay here and walked away disappointed for the amount of money you pay for the experience. Only one of the reception staff I dealt with was friendly and helpful the others were quite aloof and seemed to have an air of entitlement about them. When you arrive there is a sign purporting a valet service and to alight your vehicle, we never saw or had anyone help us with luggage on arrival or departure. There seemed to be several male "executive" staff constantly in a hurry around the place rushing and pushing past you whenever you were in the hallway. The tissue boxes in the room were 'disguised' with only one tissue fluffed up for presentation. Breakfast was disorganised, we were seated my a confused staff member and then just left with no explanation of the breakfast service(which we had received at every other hotel we stayed at)service wasn't a pleasant experience so we opted for room service the next morning only to find that a small young woman having to lug our heavy tray up three flights of stairs, surely one of the 'executive' staff could have managed it. We endured a huge screaming match for over 5-10 minutes on our last night, whether is was staff of guests I don't know but it turns out castle walls aren't as thick as you think. Lastly what is with a staff member vacuuming around the reception area while trying to check out at 9.30am in the morning, just kept vacuuming in front of the reception desk, apart from the noise what about the electrical lead being a trip hazard. If you decide to book be aware that you will have to navigate quite a few narrow steps up to your room.
The castle and rooms were beautiful. There was a great sitting area to relax in and amazing gardens.
Couldn't get the water temperature in the shower to balance out so we had to take baths. Dinner was very expensive and fancy - served very well, but it the food was not good
hotel inside the ruins of the ancient castle with all comfort of 21st century
We loved everything about the castle only paying the extra for the dukes bedchamber we were a little bit disappointed the room is tired
My 10th trip to the U.K. The ugly surprise I received at checkout substantially detracted from what would otherwise have been an enjoyable experience. See attached comment about procedure I consider both unethical and dishonest.
At checkout I was informed that holders of non- U.K. credit cards had to have their previously agreed room rate in gbp converted to their home currency at an unfavorable rate. This was done in spite of my specific request to pay the agreed rate in gbp, a practice I consider very unethical. After I was forced to sign the credit card slip, I was presented with a previously hidden statement saying that I had requested this forced conversion at an unfavorable rate. An absolute lie!
A very nice welcome and a very big room. Everything was very good.
A stunning location with excellent food.
The room was a bit tired and not finished to a high standard. The staff were very slow and rather unresponsive. I was not the only guest who had to go looking for staff at reception, to order food or drinks etc
