Simon and Jane are very, very good at what they do. Every aspect of our stay was faultless, from the warm welcome to the luxury and comfort of our room to the extraordinarily good food... and all in a secluded setting in a beautiful part of the world. Our hosts were friendly and attentive without being intrusive; they're extremely knowledgeable - and passionate - about the area, and can tell you pretty much anything you need to know about local attractions and facilities. However, as rewarding as it is to explore the locality, you'll find it difficult to drag yourself away from the house and its impressive surroundings - especially when there's the option of a mind-bogglingly tasty home-cooked evening meal, served in your room. Ours involved a good many local products (some from Simon & Jane's own garden) and it was off-the-scale delicious, as were the different breakfasts we had each morning, with a view out onto the garden and its visiting squirrels. (In fact the breakfast deserves a review of its own, with its home-made muesli, home-baked breads, home-made jams, home-made blueberry muffins, Olympic-sized locally-sourced cooked breakfast and Aga-cooked porridge, to name only a few of the options). The attention to detail at Thorney Mire Barn is amazing, but at the same time it's a homely and welcoming place; there's nothing generic or stuffy about it. I have no idea how the hosts manage to appear so relaxed and engaging whilst putting on such a seriously top-notch service. 10 out of 10; we'll definitely be back.
