Clitheroe
Set within an old corn mill with a working waterwheel, this traditional hotel enjoys a tranquil setting on an island between the historically significant Abbey Ruins and the banks of the Thames. Overlooking the Thames River, The Upper Reaches is an ideal choice for a relaxing break in the historic county of Oxfordshire, with the quaint village of Dorchester, Henley and Marlow all nearby. For shoppers, Oxford, Reading, Bicester Retail village and Abingdon are just a short drive away through the beautiful countryside. With its idyllic water-front setting and spectacular views, the Upper Reaches Hotel is well integrated into the life of the river, and as such can offer mooring for up to 6 boats. The hotel restaurant serves delicious food for lunch and dinner, but guests should book in advance. Hotel Rooms: 31

We had an excellent room with a beautiful view over the Thames and fields. It was spacious and really comfortable. A full English breakfast was included which was very good. We would stay again. The position of the hotel is first class for town, country, and Oxford.

Stylish, comfortable room, lovely location on an island on the Thames Very good restaurant with attractively served meals but steak only served 'medium' with no choice and order for puddings must be given with starter and main--How Odd!!

The location in Abingdon by the mediaeval Abbey Ruins and the River Thames provides a pleasant position close to the town centre. At the time of our visit the hotel was much cheaper than comparable hotels in Oxford - worth considering if planning to visit Oxford (Abingdon and Oxfors are linked by a good bus service). Service was friendly and the room quiet and clean. I thought that themodern furniture in the dining area rather detracted from the mill feature - suggests a "business" market orientation.

The location, the excellent room and the price. The hotel was at just over half price because of the time of year. The service was excellent, the breakfast was very good the only critique would be the shower was not as powerfull as I would have liked but I am spoiled with a combi boiler and overhead shower rose. We will definitely stay again.

Staff excellent lovely setting More signing coming from the Didcot way. Our room was very clean but needed updating. The fruit salad for breakfast was very poor. The price should not be the deciding factor as far as the fruit juices are concerned. But we would use the hotel again if we where in the area.

Really happy to stay. Old style hotel located romantically on the island with the view of old town and sound of flowing river when you go asleep. We have arrived a bit early but our room was ready and we were warmly welcome by the staff. Definitely return when visiting Oxford.

For a near town center hotel, the upper reaches is nice, quiet and relaxing. It also has character. Shower could be a bit more powerful.

The staff were very friendly and helpful. The room was comfortable and spacious.Breakfast was included in the room price, and was generously extensive and of good quality. The position of the hotel, and its outlook over the river are both attractive features. Car parking is easy, secure and free! The decor in both the public areas and the private rooms is now somewhat dated, and " tired ". The whole hotel could do with a major re- furbishment " make-over ". I also consider that the room price is a bit high for the area, and generally.

Useful re: location and view onto river. Not disturbed by loud guests or party etc. food was well presented, appetising and not overpriced Staff friendly and helpful Perhaps the accomodation -( we stayed in room 43) was a little dark in decoration - understand the need for net curtains re: privacy

Lived nearby for nearly 30 years used hotel restaurant quite often when a resident. Have used Hotel since leaving for the West Country unless staying with friends. Location superb for me to visit old friends in quite a large surrounding area. Attending funeral of a dear friend of many years, with my daughter accompanying me. Worst visit ever made - will not stay again - will use the George Hotel in Wallingford - which also have used quite often.....Breakfast (although good) I had to go to the kitchen to ask for milk (or small jug to help myself) - no marmalade or honey - again had to ask for toast - during this time could hear the waiters talking and laughing in kitchen - then the receptionist came in to talk to them - near my table and said she was bored! This at 9.40 A.M. Could go on but will not ... suffice to say will not use hotel again - also realise that the Osborne Hotel is part of the Group - I live virtually next door to the Osborne in Torquay!!

Convenient location. Nice countryside setting, close to nature. As I said in previous review the loud sound of doors slamming shut is dreadful. Some of the front desk staff are downright unfriendly.

Location by the river is lovely We were a family gathering and the Hotel was very close to wedding venue The staff were helpful and made us very welcome. Well...the room was small and cluttered with large furniture. Sorry but the dining room was poorly designed..chairs too large and immoveable, tables too small, plates too large, portions of food ...not really large enough..we left the dinner table not really satisfied. Vegetables were undercooked and the broccolli was rock like, Breakfast was ok and well presented. NO Marmalade ..at an English Hotel we asked and a hunt went on for the missing marmalade..2 little portions were found!! Toast was thin. The Hotel is in such a lovely location it needs to be more in keeping with the old town of Abingdon... Sally

The Staff at the Upper Reaches were super friendly. There was an young woman working the front desk who was from Iran and spoke excellent English. She was as friendly as can be and really left me with a positive experience of my stay there. The room was small, but clean and the shower was great. Beautiful old building that housed the hotel. The inclusive breakfast buffet was above average, but not great. Super location. I have no complaints at all about the Upper Reaches.

Very convenient, good car park, friendly reception. Obliging late bar. Riverside location. Would have liked access to the outdoor area from room especially as opening windows only small. Should have enquired at reception for the key! Bathroom (no outside windows) extractor fan needs a turbo.

The setting was excellent with a lovely atmosphere and proximity to Oxford and main routes north and south. The room was quiet despite being fairly close to a main road. The room was rather cramped and somewhat overpriced in relation to facilities offered by other hotels.

The setting with well maintained plants and comfortable seating, The very friendly and helpful staff -- all without exception appeared happy in their workplace and this reflected on the service they provided. I felt I wanted to return in the near future which is unusual for me. The only think I did not like was the unpleasant smell as I walked up the stairs to my room. My daughter also commented on this. It became a talking point but did not take away from our very pleasant visit.
