This locally owned 17th century inn, is crammed with history, traditional local cask ales and plenty of character, and stands at the lower end of Chipping Campden's historic main shopping street.
The inn is set in the small Cotswold town of Chipping Campden, an area renowned for its natural beauty. It has a peaceful position within a few hundred yards of the center of town. It is located at the start of the Cotswold Way - a well known walk along the Cotswold Hill to Bath.
The inn was named The Volunteer in the mid 1800's because local men used to 'sign on' there for the volunteer armies.
The staff aim to supply you with a quaint, comfortable room in a homey atmosphere, as well as forwarding local knowledge on the best places to visit. Rooms are serviced upon request.

Sit back and relax in one of 9 charming bedrooms as well as enjoying a sumptuous evening meal in one of Chipping Campden’s main eating outlets. Maharaja, located to the rear of the inn, provides fine, authentic Indian cuisine.

The Volunteer has 2 bars. The back bar is non-smoking, where you can enjoy a drink or sample something from the unique menu which incorporates locally sourced produce. The lounge bar has a traditional Cotswold pub atmosphere and in the winter there is a roaring log fire. There is a large choice of real ales and numerous CAMRA awards have been won in recent years.
The Indian restaurant, The Maharaja, serves authentic Indian cuisine. It mainly serves firm favorites, but also new and exciting dishes specially prepared by the chef. The variety of starters combine a glorious fusion of flavors and exotic tastes from varied regions across Asia. Dishes are prepared with a fine regard for their original cooking methods and tastes. Only the finest ingredients and authentic spices are used.

Out of the inn’s 9 charming double/twin rooms, 6 have private bathrooms. Two rooms have an outstanding view of the grounds, backing onto open fields. Four rooms have a beautiful view of the historic main street. All the rooms include complimentary mineral water.
Area information
Chipping Campden in the Cotswolds is one of the most beautiful tourist destinations in the UK. The name Campden or Camperdene is believed to be a Saxon name meaning valley with fields, and the word Chipping means market. The High Street is full of many Cotswold stone buildings constructed between the 14th and 17th centuries, and is now a conservation area.
