I did not really like anything in particular apart from the bar food Fish & Chips which was as good as any Whitby or coastal offerings. I was informed by the Bar Staff that my room was dismal and not like the main building so that made me feel really great and valued - "Not" Considering there were ony 14 guests staying they could have given me an upgrade or better room. The Pemier Inn has more comfort and welcoming. The room I stayed in 14 is not in the main building, but an Annexe which was cold, misreable and more like something in the stable block or servants quarters. I felt like the poor relation. The bathroom was freezing and in a poor condition. The valance, curtains, pillows & cushions were dirty. The bedside ornament was damaged and dusty as was the tissue box. I felt distinctly uncomfortable. The place was deserted only myself at breakfast. Wifi did not work either. Disappointing Experience.

Good to meet and chat with staff who knew colleagues of mine who had regularly stayed there 20 years previous. Beautiful place, with REAL history associated with it, and very handy for Middles borough and Darlington The room had a bit of a damp smell initially - may not've been used for a while and to be fair, I booked late, so there was no time to air it ! The bathroom needs some attention. The bath panels were nearly falling off, the bath taps were loose and turn when you open and shut them, the bathroom door hit the bath panel and could've made an annoying noise in the night, the toilet pan was not firmly screwed down into the floor

This was a treat for my husband's birthday. Thought it was more unusual than a stay at Bannatyne's-which we had been to before. Liked the idea of having both a restaurant and a pub/bar. We stayed in the castle which waas very nice and had a superb meal in the restaurant in the evening. Breakfast was good with plenty of choice. We stayed in room 20 which was nice although a little small I think compared to the other rooms on the room plan. It was more than adequate for one night but if I was staying longer would have liked a bigger rrom.

Overnight on business nearby. I thought the hotel, staff and facilities were very good indeed and would stay there again and recommend to others. A couple of issues with the food but it was put right immediately and with an unreserved apology and smile! The castle itself, the location and quietness. Also, important for me when on business trips, the wi-fi worked without a blip. At some hotels that claim to have this service, it has often only in the public areas and/or " it's not working today I'm afraid, sorry"!

the Building outside was lovely, different story inside!! The rooms were grotty, we came back in from a meal and went back to our room and the key wouldnt work, walked to reception no one was there, rang the hotel number no answer I was shouting to try and grab someones attention and nothing! after planning to go and sleep in the lounge a half asleep receptionist mumble to me after asking were the hell he had been!! I found hairs in my breakfast I found the over all hotel was more like a 2* I would never recommend staying here and will never re visit a best western.

Rooms were a bit on the cold side, though must be a challenge to keep an old castle warm

The location is superb for us, the castle stlll shines through and the architecture and history is lovely. The room we had was nice and the facilities good. Ive stayed in a few hotels and enjoyed them all. The only disappointment with this hotel is the food. Maybe we were unlucky and it was a friday night stay, maybe the chef was not up to his best, but the food was not good. We opted for bar snacks and ordered lasagne and beef and ale pie. The lasagne was way overcooked and quite inedible. The beef in the pie wasnt cooked well enough. The breakfast wasnt great either. A great shame because its such a lovely hotel.

The staff were very friendly. Our room was beautiful - especially the windows. The food wasn't as good as expected. My husband's steak had to be returned, too tough no flavour. Only limited alternatives were available.

Friendliness I was very disappointed to be charged £25.90 for two "Continental breafasts", the same as "Full breakfasts" ,and on questioning this to be to be told " that is how we catch you."jokingly or not.

I was very disappointed with the hotel. It looked very tired and and standard of furnishings and fittings was poor. My bed was clean but the carpets were old and frayed, the bathroom was tiny and the heating system noisy. Although Wifi was supposedly available throughout the hotel. I could not connect in the 3 bedrooms I tried and I had to work in the lounge which was not satisfactory for me or other guests. I had dinner in the Farmer's Bar. The beer was sour and had to be sent back. My steak sandwich was tough. I will not stay there again.

The hotel looked fabulous as you drove up We were placed in the annex I think where the rooms were definitely snug. Also I do believe some of the areas are in need of updating, particularly the stair carpets. We did not have tea in our room either, only coffee which my husband does not drink.

The room with the four poster bed was great with a decent size en suite bathroom. The building itself was very nice in a great location,we visited the nearby Raby castle and went upto Durham. The staff were nice and helpfull. Apart from a few minor gripes we both enjoyed our visit. The condition of the room wasnt great with damp on the ceiling, and numerous cobwebs behind the tv and dressing table. The drinks are quite expensive at nearly 10 pounds for a wine and a pint of cider...... But this unfortunatley is becoming the norm. There wasnt much of a drinking area to watch the footy ( romantic weekend or not ),as most areas were set up to eat.
