I found the hotel pleasant and in an excellent location for many activities such as walking on the moors, visiting tourist attractions and ther was even an excellent sports centre close by. The shops were very good in the town which was easy walking distance from the hotel. The staff were attentive, smart and very friendly. The food was very good and the breakfast was excellent. The whole experience was was very pleasant and I would not hesitate to recommend the hotel to anyone.

My family needed accommodation to attend a wedding at Tavistock Parish Church with a reception at the Town Hall. I booked at the Bedford while the rest of the family booked into Browns. I definitely made the right choice. The Bedford overlooks both the church and town hall so I couldn't have been any closer. There is a free carpark (unlike browns). I got the best deal by going through booking.com. I found £55 per night still pricey for a single B&B but hotels in tavistock don't come cheap! This was a cheaper option than browns by far. I was given a huge family room which was spacious, comfortable and clean. I spent some time at browns and found the rooms are barely big enough to swing a cat. The extra star at Browns does mean you get fancy radio, and a prettier box to keep your teas and coffees in but what you are paying for is a tarted up shoe box! I did find my room at the Bedford was a little hot but it wasn't a problem keeping window open as I didn't hear any outdoor noise at night and I was close to the road. The only concern I would have with room 18 is if you need to keep the window open, I would put something in front of the low window if you have younger kids (the window is low down). My family staying at Browns found it particularly noisy at night saying that they heard a lot of screaming as the drunks walked home up the street as the hotel is situated in the middle of town on an enclosed street with a pubs a restaurants. So in summary: What was better in the Bedford - Room size Location A quiets nights sleep Car Park Value for money What was better in Browns - More updated decore Really if you have the money, don't mind walking to your car, sleep with ear plugs, like the feeling of Claustrophobia, but need the pretentious feel to a hotel go for browns. Otherwise go to the bedford.

It was very comfortable if in need of a bit of updating in places but very welcoming and "old country house" feel about it. Cannot think of anything.

We had stayed at the sister hotel the previous evening which had been excellent and the Bedford was no different. Very friendly staff, excellent food and nothing was too much trouble. The management of the two hotels should be commended

The staff were so friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble, even the chamber persons spoke to you. The atmosphere was one of quiet and relaxtion, plenty of places to sit and read. The breakfast room was laid out nicely and there was plenty to eat. The bedrooms were very comfortable and the bathroom a nice size. I would definitley stay there again and reccommend this hotel highly

We found the hotel traditional and the decor of the public rooms could be given a lift.As with many hotels the bedrooms were rather hot. However, any deficiences on the fabric of the hotel were more than made up by excellent staff attitude and cooking of a far higher standard than was to be expected.

Everything was 10-10 especially the staff , the food and drink very good, the service always with a smile, a very calm relaxed atmosphere and so quiet Tavistock itself has unusual shops and is a good central point to explore Dartmoor and it`s surroundings

The building itself and its location in the heart of Tavistock. In particular the food. We had two evening meals both of which were exceptional. All of the staff were very friendly and helpful. We had a great weekend. The heater in the bath room did not work. The staff were very helpful in trying ot overcome the problem but it turned out not to be as easy as 1st thought. No ventilation in the room. The windows could not be opened. These issues did not spoil our stay.

The staff were friendly and courteous. The room was a very good size. I had dinner and breakfast and both were lovley. Free car park with plenty of spaces. Free Wi Fi. The floor boards were creaky so if you are a light sleeper this may be a problem if someone above you walks around frequently at night or goes to bed later than you. Unfortunately I am a light sleeper and that was the case for me. This was the only problem I had with hotel though and I hasn't put me off staying again..

It was a short walk from the party we were going to, it was a treat to stay there for us but an expensive one, if there had been a travelodge we would have booked that but we could get used to the Bedford but not sure if we are the kind of people they are looking for. Lovely oldy worldly atmosphere. We ate in the bar when we arrived, the food was wonderful and so was the service but it would have been nice if the tables had been a bit taller so that it was more comfortable to eat from.

“A warm and friendly welcome from the owners. The whole place exuded charm and comfort without ostentation. The room had every facility a traveller could need and was far superior to the 'boutique' room we stayed in on the following night. Will definitely return and spend more time exploring the area. ” Jane, Hollingworth, Hyde |
