Set in a stunning location on Wells Cathedral Green, facing the West Front, the Ancient Gatehouse is well-located for exploring Somerset's beautiful historic areas.
Score from 143 reviews Very good
In the Somerset countryside, the 5-star rated Beaconsfield Farm is a 9-minute drive from Wells and just 4 minutes from Wookey Hole Caves.
Score from 29 reviews Exceptional
This hotel is next to Wookey Hole Caves, 2 miles from the medieval town of Wells. It offers modern rooms with free Wi-Fi, a restaurant and free parking.
Score from 883 reviews Very good
The hotel is wonderfully located in Wells and a great place to spend a few days. We were able to walk everywhere so could leave the car parked at the hotel for the duration of our stay. Parking was available at the hotel but was very tight. The hotel was clean and quiet and very comfortable.
The tight parking could be a problem.
The location was perfect.
Parking was very difficult. Need to be a very good driver to manoeuvre round this car park. No telephone in room and poor mobile signal.
staff response and location
the space in the room was very limited. The décor needed some attention
Excellent location In centre of city Close to famous cathedral and bishops palace gardens. Friendly and helpful staff. Good value for money
Decor rather dated..room though clean was very bare with not even one print or picture on the wall!! Rather awkward parking area in back yard.
welcoming staff good breakfast
poor bar restaurant closed tired décor carpet in bathroom
bar almost no existant. Had not re -stocked since wedding weekend before
Bath with only a hand held shower attachment
Access to the rooms is not secure and their was disturbance from non-guests coming on to the premises during the night.
The staff were helpful, the breakfast was very good.
Our room was covered in cobwebs, especially in the bathroom. We ran the taps in the sink and the smell from the plug hole was horrendous.
TV Reception wasn't great
Location is excellent, just opposite the Cathedral.
There is no lounge and parking is limited and awkward. The parking may well be an issue at all Wells hotels.
Location Friendly staff
Poor Wi-Fi Water pressure in room
Location. Bedding was clean.
Air in the room seemed cold and damp, although bed wasn't. Bath had patches where enamel was worn away and grouting needed renewing or at least cleaning properly. Mattress was too soft. Altogether rather shabby.
The breakfast looked okay although I didn't eat anything cooked. Dining area modern and clean (although I understand it is a restaurant open to the public!)
The car parking if you call it a car park! The staff disappear and multi task on everything. The cleaning can't be done very often or the modernising/decorating! The toilet seat in our room is clearly broken and moves in use everytime so why don't they fix it. And inches from our room upstairs was a function room used for parties/wedding receptions!
Very friendly. Lovely breakfast Excellent location in the centre of Wells opposite the Cathedral.
The surrounding village and nearby cathedral. Parking was just okay.
Very basic room. Had trouble even remembering this hotel. Very narrow staircase, difficult to maneuver past people. Poor reception area.
Breakfast was good Staff very pleasant
Whole Hotel in need of updating Overpriced for the standard of accommodation
Old fashioned bedroom, not like the web photos at all. Poor lighting, including 2 bulbs not working. Not the cleanest.
Waitress said there was no taxi and we could easily walk to bus station! Two 70+ year olds dragging bags all the way to bus station? I think not and when we got there we saw taxis!
We were given the room shown in the booking.com picture, and all in all we were pleased with it. It was quiet, pleasant, comfortable, and had everything we needed. There were some nice touches, such as the complementary bottle of water. The staff were very friendly and extremely helpful, also efficient. Our special requests were attended to. The food was good on the whole and the breakfast was enough for our needs. The booking and checking in and out was handled efficiently. The location for the cathedral and centre of Wells is excellent. It is also opposite a very good restauant which takes orders until 9.15 pm. There is car parking which is good but not as many spaces as there are rooms.
We had read some not so positive reviews on line and so were prepared for the worst, but were actually pleasantly surprised. What stopped our rating from being excellent was for example, the fact that the room carpet seemed a bit damaged. Perhaps it needs replacing at some point. Also the wood was a bit cracked in the bathroom on the shower frame. Our view from our window was actually of the car park but this didn't matter that much as it didn't seem noisy and we didn't spend that much time in the room. Our overall view of the hotel is positive although probably not in the same league as one or two of the upmarket hotels in Wells. The restaurant is good but not that much choice if you don't eat steak - fish and chips and the vegetarian burger is about all there is.
Nice oldie worldie feel
Rooms are quite small and feel a little dated in a poor way.
perfect location, close to cathedral, shops and restaurants.
The hotel is tired. Furniture in our bedroom was old and tatty and not particularly clean. Carpet next to the sink and shower is not a good idea, particularly as the shower door wasn't well fitted. There is not much to encourage visitors to spend time in the hotel.
Well positioned. Friendly staff. Breakfast was served quickly and was well cooked. Liked the fact that the toast was brought to the table as in so many places now you have to make your own.
Only thing would be that I would rather a shower cabinet rather than a bath with a shower attachment.
Nothing was outstanding
Indifferent staff, bathroom in poor condition, parking chaotic.
Lovely old world charm of a coaching inn, with cobbled courtyard.Great situation right next to old Cathedral grounds. Convenient on-site parking
