The White Lion HotelMarket Cross Place, IP15 5BJ Aldeburgh (Show map) Excellent, Score from 283 reviews“Beds were extremely comfortable, tea and coffee (including decaf) making facilities were good. Bathroom was well appointed. Nice relaxing lounge on ground floor. An excellent restaurant with exceptionally well trained staff was a lovely bonus.”

The White Lion is a traditional hotel opposite Aldeburgh’s shingle beach, where wooden huts line the shore. Guests can enjoy fresh seafood, free Wi-Fi, and some of the rooms have far-reaching sea views. The privately owned hotel offers excellent service and menus made from fresh Suffolk produce. You can dine in the informal beach-facing bar, with its real ales, or the oak-paneled, AA Rosette-awarded restaurant. With its warm atmosphere, log fires and good food, The White Lion is a wonderful seaside hideaway. A variety of walking trails surround the area, and Snape Maltings Concert Hall is a 10-minute drive away. Tennis at the Country Club, and golf on the established James Braid course can be arranged at nearby Thorpeness. There is also space for free parking on site. Hotel Rooms: 38

We were impressed by the friendliness and efficiency of all the staff. The refurbishment was excellent - we had stayed at the White Lion some years previously .

Excellent service, good food at reasonable prices, excellent location Made a restaurant reservation a month before we arrived only to find that they had no record of it! They did manage to sort it out so no problem. Also booked a morning call but did not receive it the first day so a bit of a lack of communication between staff!

The hotel is situated right on the sea front and was quiet of a night. The bed was comfortable and the room was accessable for disabled people with wet room and shower seat. Had a lift even though it was very slow and a bit on the small side. Although we couldnt get my scooter into lift we were given the opportunity to charge it downstairs in a function room. The manager let the whole team in the hotel down and one day our room wasnt clean properly and there were no clean towels.

staff v pleasant. breakfast excellent. sandwich we had was lovely (but expensive!) overpriced. had seafront facing room which was so hot it was unbearable (the window only opened 4"). Im disabled so I had checked there was a lift - what it didnt mention was the lift only went to 2nd floor & I was on 3rd floor. v little parking at rear of hotel and difficult to find a space on arrival at the front.

Our sea view room was very modern and extremely comfortable. The views of the sea from the window were great especially first thing in the morning as the sun was rising. The food in the restaurant was delicious and where possible locally sourced - the fish comes from a fishermans hut across the road - you can't get more local than that!

Great, comfortable stay. Good breakfast. I was on the top floor and the wi-fi signal was not strong enough. I had to sit in the lobby to get any work done and this was not ideal. I spoke to a lady at the reception but she seemed unconcerned, indicated that that they didn't know there was a problem - which I find hard to believe. It's a shame because it is a simple problem that can easily be fixed by adding another transmitter.

Very pleasant and helpful staff. Nice room and firm bed. Good menu for evening meal and very good service. Dreadful breakfast, I had to instruct the staff the definition of toast, i.e. warm bread does not constitiute toast. I have never been particularly partial to raw sausage either. The bacon appears to be cooked at about 7.00 and kept warm for the next 3 hours so I used it to repair one of my shoes. 2 problems here: Someone in the kitchen and I hesitate to use the term "chef" thinks this is acceptable.2) a member of serving staff thinks this also. On returning to the hotel at 11.45 saturday night we were told they could arrange for one round of drinks "the night porter has called in sick and I want to go home" said a member of staff.Another member of staff: "Oh good you are back, I was worried we might not have been able to contact you as there is no night porter and you would get locked out" !! Is the war still on in Aldeburgh??

Good food , comfortable room, great view. If I am to be picky I would have expected the menu to have more fresh fish, maybe crab or lobster etc.

The sea view double room had a good layout. The bed faced the low window, so you can lay in bed and watch the sea (although the windows were a bit condensated due to the time of year - January). The room was very clean, and we didn't get at all cold. It was fairly small, but cozy. Every member of staff was friendly, in the hotel and the brasserie. The brasserie provided a convinient place to eat and the breakfast was one of the best I have had for choice, portions and quality of food. Alseburgh itself has a lot of character. For a seaside village, it is well looked maintained. There is a slightly oldy worldy atmosphere, where life is in the slow lane.,,this felt really relaxing. I will definitely stay here again... There was a wedding function on, which could be heard in our room. We were just at the top of the stairs, above the hotel reception area where everyone seemed to congregate as the night progressed. It didn't disturb us too much though, as we'd been for a fairly late drink. A door at the top of the stairs could help this...

We enjoyed our 2 day break with you very much the hotel was welcoming, warm and comfortable. As my husband is partially disabled we found the step from bedroom to en-suite rather steep.

We love Aldebugh and we have stayed at the White lion a few times many years ago but that was before the refurbishment. The standard and service has always been excellent but the rooms now have been brought upto the same grade. We had a fantastic weekend and hope to book again very soon.

Great location - just across from the beach. Worth paying a little extra for a sea view room. Excellent food with a varied menu. Lovely hotel for a quiet winter break. But beware, apart from walking on the beach or up and down the small high street there is nothing to do. Free wi-fi but couldn't get a good signal from our room. Otherwise no complaints!

The best value for money hotel we have stayed in. Staff could not have been more helpful in every area of the hotel - reception, restaurant and cleaning. The food is amazing and good value. Congratulations to all the staff and management and thanks for a great stay.

Although disappointed there were no seaview rooms left, our room was lovely! Very comfortable bed and the room and bathroom were both very clean. Although the shower shutter leaked leaving us with a wet floor! The food at breakfast was delicious and there was an excellent selection to choose from. Although on the 2nd morning, the fresh orange juice had been replaced with a non fresh variety! We ate in the restaurant on our 2nd evening and the food was excellent! No complaints whatsoever there! The White Lion is a fantastic hotel, staff were very helpful and friendly and we will definitely stay there again.

Excellent coastal location , superb accomodation and decor very recently refurbished . Staff very attentive and everything in the Restaurant served to the table rather than Buffet service . Excellent overall value . Due to original design of Hotel some rooms only accessible by flights of stairs ,would be a problem for the disabled .

“the position of the hotel accommodates a stay at the seaside whatever the weather. When the weather is fine it allows folks to walk straight out onto the front parade to enjoy the resort but if not, the facilities give a perfect place to just sit and relax and take in the view in comfort.” Colleen, Nr.
