Excellent,
Score from 380 reviews
“This hotel is perfectly placed to take advantage of the local area. The White Lion retains old fashioned values and it's staff are excellent. The recent renovation has kept the traditional feel of the hotel without being overbearing in it's decor. The restaurant is excellent and above all the friendly staff made our stay perfect. Will definately be back.”

The White Lion is a traditional hotel opposite Aldeburgh’s shingle beach, where wooden huts line the shore. Guests can enjoy fresh seafood, free Wi-Fi, and some of the rooms have far-reaching sea views. The privately owned hotel offers excellent service and menus made from fresh Suffolk produce. You can dine in the informal beach-facing bar, with its real ales, or the oak-paneled, AA Rosette-awarded restaurant. With its warm atmosphere, log fires and good food, The White Lion is a wonderful seaside hideaway. A variety of walking trails surround the area, and Snape Maltings Concert Hall is a 10-minute drive away. Tennis at the Country Club, and golf on the established James Braid course can be arranged at nearby Thorpeness. There is also space for free parking on site. The hotel is situated right on the sea front and was quiet of a night. The bed was comfortable and the room was accessable for disabled people with wet room and shower seat. Had a lift even though it was very slow and a bit on the small side. Although we couldnt get my scooter into lift we were given the opportunity to charge it downstairs in a function room. The manager let the whole team in the hotel down and one day our room wasnt clean properly and there were no clean towels.

We enjoyed our 2 day break with you very much the hotel was welcoming, warm and comfortable. As my husband is partially disabled we found the step from bedroom to en-suite rather steep.

We like the relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff. The whole place has a buzz about it.The decor and surroundings within the hotel is pleasing and the view of the sea front from inside to outside is unique. The hotel is on the door step of some beautiful walks along the beach with the added interest of the shell sculpture as well as having easy access to some peaceful marshy nature reserves. The evening meal and breakfast was immaculately served and absolutely delicious.

Very friendly & efficient staff, who made us feel very welcome. Comfortable room, great evening meal without having to brave the wet weather! Stylish but not pretentious. Parking outside the door was a bonus too!

I booked through booking.com and got a great rate of £86 which was excellent considering how lovely the hotel was. The food was superb too and at £10.50 set menu an absolute bargain. Rooms were really comfortable and clean, hotel was warm, really nicely furnished and decorated and staff were excellent - particularly the young, blonde English lady who was working at dinner and served our breakfast. Really superb - will definitely be taking my boyfriend for a weekend stay as I tool my dad for his birthday present on this occasion.

I particularly liked the friendliness of the staff - and the fact they were willing to help in every possible way. The hotel has a very nice atmosphere. We only stayed one night and were out for dinner but breakfast the next morning was first-class. Too many stairs! (but that's only a minor gripe)

The hotel has been refurbished and is beautiful. The staff are very friendly and helpful. We were made to feel so welcome. The location is right on the beach and was perfect. We will be going back soon Parking your car could be a problem at peak times. Small hotel car park at rear and on-street parking only. But don't be put off by this

We love everything about this hotel. Great location opposite the beach, with great sea views. This was our third stay. The staff are always so helpful and polite and the food brilliant. We love the sea food platter for two. We will be back.

The location was exactly what we were looking for, really proffessional staff, excellent food and located right next to the beach. It was very quiet allowing us to relax undisturbed. Our wedding anniversary celebrations were very successful. Surprised that there was no hairdryer in the room.

Originally come from the area so know the location well. The hotel was lovely and our room overlooked the sea. Ideal for a relaxing evening, beach walks and comfort. The breakfast was especially good. Would recommend the walk along the beach to pretty Thorpeness.

We received a very warm welcome, the hotel had a cosy feel with a touch of the luxurious. Its situation is perfect with beach and sea views also incorporating 'fish shacks' and fishing boats adding context to the whole Aldeburgh feel. The restaurant offered a good and reasonably priced menu, only slight dissappointment, the mussels were sold out! Would recomend for inpromptu special occassions!

We had a lovely time at The White Lion Hotel, the staff were friendly and helpful. We had dinner in the restaurant for my husband's birthday, the food was great and they couldn't do enough to make the evening successful. Our room was clean and bright with a lovely sea view, cannot praise the htel and staff enough and will definitely be returning.

Fantastic location opposite the beach and surrounded by beautiful countryside. Food and service were excellent. Only minor comments, but the tables/ chairs in the dining room looked particularly cheap ( veneered wood) and the lighting in the dining room in the evening was too bright, giving it more of a cafe feel, than a cosy restaurant feel.

The staff are just so friendly and work together as a great team. It is obvious they genuinely like each other and care passionately about the hotel and the guests staying in it. They really know the meaning of 'customer care' The food is to die for and is presented beautifully. Aldeburgh is a wonderful un-spoilt part of the county of Suffolk and the hotel is on the sea-front where you can hear the waves and the seagulls from the rooms and is the best hotel in the town. A truely #old fashioned values' hotel with a modern contempary decor- a perfect mix of old and new!

Lovely old hotel near the beach in Aldeburgh, with free parking opposite reception. The reception was friendly and efficient. The breakfast was very good and with plenty of variety, served by the staff - who were also very friendly and efficient. Our room was a long way from reception, up and down several flights of steps, and it overlooked a wall which was very close to the building. Whilst we didn't expect a seaview, the room was quite small, so this added to a rather claustrophobic feeling in the room. The advertised free WiFi wasn't working, though no-one advised us until we were leaving and I asked if it was because we were so far from the reception....apparently everyone had been having problems. None of these issues was a big problem, but it wasn't cheap in March for b&b for two. The cost of the location, I guess....

The White Lion is in an excellent location, few interesting shops and good, friendly pubs on doorstep. The staff were very friendly and provided an excellent service. The rooms were all spotlessly clean and well arranged. Would have preferred a larger bed, but will remember to ask prior to booking next time. The restaurant has a lovely atmosphere and the food was excellent. Would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel to friends and family. Super!

“I liked the combination of old-fashioned atmosphere with modern requirements. The food was excellent. I liked the decor, one example being the shell motif in the bathroom. Staff were courteous and unintrusive. Parking was easy. I would consider staying again.” Anne, Oxford |
