An excellent base from which to discover Suffolk's many delights, this charming hotel is situated opposite Aldeburgh’s shingle beach, in an area of outstanding natural beauty.

Nearby you can enjoy the many walking trails, both coastal and country, and a number of nature reserves, including Havergate Island and RSPB Minsmere. There is also excellent sailing on the River Alde; golf opportunities at Thorpeness and Aldeburgh; the castles of Orford and Framlingham; the Snape Maltings; and the beautiful Heritage Coast. Fishing, golf and tennis are all available within 5 km of the hotel.

Just opposite the shingle beach, where fresh fish is sold from traditional wooden huts lining the shore, The White Lion is a traditional, privately-owned hotel, offering the highest standards of hospitality, service and value for money, without compromising on quality. With its oak panelling and beams, log fires, warm atmosphere and seaside setting, it is a wonderful hideaway from which to enjoy the natural tonic of a seaside holiday.

The White Lion is Aldeburgh's oldest hotel.

Food & beverage

Restaurant 1563, named after the year the hotel was built, with its fine oak panelled walls and a roaring log fire in the winter, offers elegant and informal dining. Local seafood dishes are a speciality together with traditional Sunday roast lunches. For a lighter bite, try the bar. All dishes are freshly prepared using the best in local produce.

Vegetarian dishes are available as are special dietary dishes by prior arrangement.

Open for lunch and dinner.

A wide range of specially selected wines from local brewers Adnams.
Non-smoking restaurant, seating for 80 guests.
Dress code: smart-casual (no shorts).

During the Aldeburgh Festival and the August proms at Snape Maltings, the hotel can provide pre-concert meals or late suppers. Delicious picnic hampers can also be arranged during the August proms.

Dining room and bar were lovely

I left feedback for the hotel that the first impression wasn't good. The reception area smells a bit musty and the first thing you see is the stair lift. I know that having a stair lift is important - but could they not install a lift? Just the sight of it coupled with the smell made it feel a bit like an old people's home. Apart from that it was lovely.

The Sea view was fantastic on the Sunday morning. The reception staff were excellent. The food was excellent.

The room/bathroom could do with a bit of modernisation. The double bed was 2 single mattresses put together so was not entirely comfortable. There was no fridge or mini bar or iron facility in the room although the receptionist found an iron to use.

Convenient for business needs.

Poor menu for vegitarians like me, particularly breakfast! In general the hotel was OK but nothing to get excited about. Staff were friendly and helpful.

Nice staff very friendly and hotel was nice in general. The resturant food was very good highly recommended.

The service was slow in the resturant waited along time for the food and to get served even though it wasn't very busy and used tables were not cleaned up just left in a mess>

Staff were very helpful and accomodating when we needed to change rooms due to a faulty light. The breakfast was fantastic with all food locally sourced.

The excellent breakfast

The heating in our room - the thermostat on the radiator was broken so that we arrived to find the heating had been turned off and when turned on could not be adjusted so that eventually the room was very hot. the heating in the bathroom depended on an old fashioned towel rail which was only heated by the water passing through when the hot tap was being run!
