An excellent base from which to discover Suffolk's many delights, this charming hotel is situated opposite Aldeburgh’s shingle beach, in an area of outstanding natural beauty.

Nearby you can enjoy the many walking trails, both coastal and country, and a number of nature reserves, including Havergate Island and RSPB Minsmere. There is also excellent sailing on the River Alde; golf opportunities at Thorpeness and Aldeburgh; the castles of Orford and Framlingham; the Snape Maltings; and the beautiful Heritage Coast. Fishing, golf and tennis are all available within 5 km of the hotel.

If you need to escape from the hectic pace of everyday life, then The White Lion makes the perfect retreat for a relaxing break. The comfortable and well-appointed interior, excellent cuisine and efficient, but discreet, service combine for a relaxed and memorable occasion.

Just opposite the shingle beach, where fresh fish is sold from traditional wooden huts lining the shore, The White Lion is a traditional, privately-owned hotel, offering the highest standards of hospitality, service and value for money, without compromising on quality. With its oak panelling and beams, log fires, warm atmosphere and seaside setting, it is a wonderful hideaway from which to enjoy the natural tonic of a seaside holiday.

The White Lion is Aldeburgh's oldest hotel.

Mat og Drikke

Restaurant 1563, named after the year the hotel was built, with its fine oak panelled walls and a roaring log fire in the winter, offers elegant and informal dining. Local seafood dishes are a speciality together with traditional Sunday roast lunches. For a lighter bite, try the bar. All dishes are freshly prepared using the best in local produce.

Vegetarian dishes are available as are special dietary dishes by prior arrangement.

Open for lunch and dinner.

A wide range of specially selected wines from local brewers Adnams.
Non-smoking restaurant, seating for 80 guests.
Dress code: smart-casual (no shorts).

During the Aldeburgh Festival and the August proms at Snape Maltings, the hotel can provide pre-concert meals or late suppers. Delicious picnic hampers can also be arranged during the August proms.

The food was excellent and the customer care and service by the restaurant staff was exemplary. We were made to feel welcome in a warm freindly family atmosphere.

Food was excellent.

1. Disappointed that newspaper was requested on each of the 3 days, but none arrived. 2. Extremely surprised that a TV set was brought in to the bar - at the request of a non-resident - and tuned to a football match. I do not feel this is appropriate for a hotel of this character.

I really loved the location. Staff were thoroughly professional and polite.

I thought for the price of the rooms (for me £102 per night) that the hotel needs an overhaul. The decor of the rooms and hallways is very dated, but not quite shabby. I feel tis was not accurately reflected in the price of the room. It was very clean though.

The restaurant for the beautiful breakfast and the staff at breakfast, who were excellent

It could do with a facelift as it looked a bit tired and as such the price could have been a little lower

Being an old building access to rooms was narrow and circuitous.

Excellent breakfasts/ Pleasant location/ pleasant, helpful staff.

Stair lift out of order making elderly access to first floor difficult. Shower over bath difficult/dangerous to negotiate for elderly. Some updating needed.

It was next to the seaside!!!!

It is not exactly a complaint but the hot water was extemely hot,it was scalding.Great for adults but for the elderly or children it could be dangerous.It nearly burnt me and I was in Catering all my life so I am used to handling hot plates etc!!!.

Access especially with cases is difficult, involving going up then down
then up stairs, and no lift

The position was excellent and the beer was good

Very dissapointed with the room which was pokey, airless, hot and at the
back of the hotel, event though it was top price. The baathroom had a
floor that was collapsing, and the seagulls woke us at 4:30am since we
couldn't sleep without the window wide open. The dinner was poor and
relatively expensive.

It was very dog friendly. Breakfasts were great. Overall facilities were good.

The shower in our room was very weak and the water temperature was tepid.

The 'old world' charm of the actual building plus the easy accessabilty to the town & beach front. Amazing breakfast! Friendly staff.

No lifts for the extra luggage we had!
