This award-winning B&B is located in Berwick-upon-Tweed, an historic coastal town and the most northerly town in England. The old walls that surround the town are a 10-minute walk away, and the ruins of the castle are also nearby. For over 400 years, Berwick was a crucial area in the border wars between England and Scotland. It has numerous striking sights, including bridges across the River Tweed, and a number of pretty old buildings. Norham Castle, which has been besieged at least 13 times in its history, is a 15-minute drive from Cowrie Guest House. Rooms at Cowrie Guest House are elegant and traditionally furnished, and each has a flat-screen TV and tea and coffee making facilities. Every room also benefits from a modern private bathroom with free toiletries. A home-cooked, hearty breakfast is provided each morning. A wide range of restaurants, eateries and cafes can be reached within 15 minutes’ walk.

The owner/operators were very friendly and helpful. It's a very short walk from the train station, which is good if you've got luggage.

The location was excellent - very central but not noisy, free parking was a couple of minutes walk away and easy to find. The owners were very friendly and the breakfast was lovely.

Company info

We are Ian and Ruth and we have two children Brodie and Jasmine. We moved to Berwick-Upon-Tweed during Christmas of 2018 to take over Whyteside House Bed and Breakfast. Previously we were another couple in the busy South of England, doing well in our respective jobs but often feeling that we were missing out on a lot of our other interests. After a little debate we decided to open a bed and breakfast. We looked at a few in Scotland, Ruth grew up in Edinburgh, but during a day trip to Berwick-Upon-Tweed were totally charmed with the town and what it had to offer. It is a fantastic location, suitable for our various watersports, outdoor adventure and running interests. Now we would like to welcome others into a piece of our world and to share the fantastic area that we now live in.

Property info

The Cowrie Guest House (formally Whyteside House Bed and Breakfast) offers a warm welcome and comfortable accommodation with fantastic access to the heart of Berwick-Upon-Tweed. We also have a tasty breakfast menu and buffet selection for you to choose from. Situated on the main road into Berwick, The Cowrie has free parking outside for those arriving by car and the train station is less than five minutes walk away. It offers good access for those walking or cycling the Northumberland coastal path and has several great surfing spots.

Neighborhood info

Berwick town has a host of interesting independent shops, cafes and restaurants including The Maltings Theatre, that can be integrated into a walk around the historic fortified town walls. Other fabulous short walks include following the Lowry trail around the town, wandering to our local sandy beaches or along the river, the historical dividing line between England and Scotland. The Cowrie also has fantastic access to landmarks further a field including Paxton House, The Holy Island of Lindisfarne, Chain Bridge Honey Farm as well as at least six spectacular castles including Alnwick and Bamburgh.
