Sitting room/ lounge ambience and delicious mince pies. Helpful bar staff.
Stress regarding parking (arriving after dark on a rainy night by car and trying to find the parliament street car park). To find that other people in the hotel were on a same price room deal but with breakfast, mince pies and dinner included.
Great rooms fab location, looking forward to visiting in summer,
The location, a few minutes walk from the station and a few minutes walk to the town. Nice view overlooking the garden. Very comfortable, pleasant room. Great history to this hotel and we look forward to returning.
The fact there was no one to serve us at the bar. A bar bell would rectify this. Also, no one could work the coffee machine. However, these are very minor complaints in what was a very enjoyable stay.
Location Friendly staff Good breakfast Good size room Quiet
Breakfast can be a bit chaotic at peak times Bar is a bit pricey
Waiting to be served in the bar area first for coffee then later in the evening for drinks
guided tour of W Remembrance service in Cath meeting a potential House Sitting location for us in perhaps 2016
Hotel room could do with a small refrigerator. Phone to reception didn't work. Dining room needed some windows open for fresh air at breakfast.
Great comfortable bed Lovely room very spacious and clean. Staff lovely very helpful and polite Great breakfast fab sausages and bacon. Good supply of toiletries and drinks provided in the room
Bit of noise from corridors at night due to noisy neighbors banging doors. Internet was a bit patchy
Wouldnt go again there are much cheaper hotels and you dont have to pay extra for your parking and your breakfast would be in as well.
Slept like a baby
It was difficult to log into the guest wi fi
staff very helpful
room was much too hot even with radiator off and window open
Nice room, good food and breakfast
Not enough parking, so had to hike up the road. Bar had no draught Guinness, no "ordinary" tonic (just slimline) and no sauvignon blanc. I do not feel an 80 bed hotel should disadvantage the guests to such an extent just because they were changing systems or stock taking or whatever.
Really good location. Nice breakfast
First impressions count for a lot. The reception desk had flowers on that were almost dead. I know I sound like I am whingeing, but believe me, if I noticed then they must have been bad. Then, when we went to our 'feature' room there were around 7 staff, sat on the floor in the hallway, having their lunch! In the morning, when they were cleaning rooms, in a small doorway, a cupboard storeroom door was open with the dirty towels strewn around outside, so that we had to step over them. The weekend was a treat as we don't get away without kids often, and I'd recommend Winchester any day, but we both felt that we wouldn't stay here again. I am sorry that I'm not able to give a good report. If there had been a survey, or if anyone had asked on the day, I would have told them exactly the same thing.
Excellent location for shops etc. comfortable room and friendly staff.
Room was a long walk from reception.
Classy little hotel
wifi a bit weak in rooms in annexe
The location in Winchester. The garden. The Breakfast
1.The room door squeaked very loudly when opening and closing . annoyingly so! Simple maintenance that has not been attended to. 2. The shower temperature control was erratic, too hot or not warm enough, very difficult to get right. Both Faults which should not occur in a good hotel
Comfortable bed, comfortable - if small - room. Central location.
No space in the car park so had to find public parking. Hotel very crowded and staff at reception seemed to struggle to cope at checkout. Breakfast a stampede ...Once breakfast (which was mediocre) was added on to the room price, this was poor value compared to better hotels in Winchester.
Clean and Comfortable
£10 a night to park the car and £16.50 each for breakfast
Car park very busy Very slow service in bar Room service didn't arrive Long wait to check in and out
Location was great - Parking in Central Winchester was a bonus - staff were good
Being woken by the cleaners an hour and a half before checkout
Beautiful setting and decor great central location
Breakfast in room not great Terrible smell around the stair well and up the stairs cleanliness of room not great stains on bathroom wall which would of come of with washing so someone just didn't wash the bathroom properly certain times of the day you had to search for staff
We were 3 blocks away from Winchester Cathedral, lots of restaurants (from pubs serving fish and chips to fine dining) and a lovely historic building. Very clean and fresh.
Although we had a reservation complete with a confirmation number our reservation was lost. The staff did everything possible to get a room for us. With our consent we were given a room that had a broken door card-key but we had a real, actual key. That was fine. The toilet, however, did not flush. That's a problem. While we went to dinner someone went to "look" at the toilet. Didn't fix it though. My handyman husband rigged a way to flush. Hopefully the hotel will look at it again. The staff was wonderful though.
If you want a hotel in Winchester, you'd find this hard to beat. There are probably cheaper places, but the location puts you right in the centre of the city. The rooms are comfortable and well appointed (although the building is over 300 years old so it has character and slightly wonky floors)
24 hour service. Quiet but convenient location. Good selection of channels on the television. Efficient staff.
No instructions on how to access the wi-fi. One had to ring reception for this. One can only access the internet on one device. I don't mean that one is confined to one device at a time, I mean that if one has a tablet and a mobile phone the first device used becomes the only one you can use. Ones use is limited to an hour as well. Nowhere else I have stayed has had these limitations.
We stayed in a room in the main, traditional portion of the hotel. The decor in our room and the public areas of the hotel is beautifully matched to the style of the building. The Secret Garden is a quiet oasis. The staff were very friendly. The staff at breakfast are some of the hardest working hotel staff we have seen - they worked so hard to maintain the breakfast selection; it was topped up constantly. The quality of the breakfast was very good. The only hotel we have seen that refresh the milk jug each time new guests sit at a table - a detail usually overlooked but indicative of the standard at the Winchester Royal.
Although everything else was immaculate, the one thing we could fault was the cleanliness of the shower plug cover; the gunk in the pipe was making the water drain slowly so that the shower tray was filling up as you showered. We felt embaressed to complain as the standard was so high otherwise.
The staff were all lovely and very helpful. The wedding went off beautifully and the wedding breakfast was superb.
