Generally it was just a bit dirty. The showers were a little icky, and everything was just a bit worn down. It had good character, but was a bit like staying in a camp---that sort of quality. That said, it wasn't unpleasant, just not what I would have expected for the money; I'd have been perfectly happy staying there if it hadn't been so expensive.
This hostel was in a beautiful location. It is not that convenient to get to, but the walk along the cliffs from Robin Hood's Bay was an enjoyable one, and the isolation was part of the charm. There is also a pub attached, and it is possible to buy dinner and breakfast, so there is no need to make the trip into town all the time. The staff were also pretty friendly.
