The YHA Ambleside sits on the shores of Lake Windermere in the Lake District. It offers a range of budget accommodation, a café serving local food, and self-catering facilities.

Score from 426 reviews Good
The views Lots of places to sit despite hostel being full On-site bar and restaurant
Self catering kitchen area quite small Parking a little tricky due to hostel being full
Good facility with beutiful view, friendly staff.
It's a good place if u have your own car, otherwise you need to call taxi for departure and arrival as it is far from Windermere town and it is difficult to walk long straight hill.
The kitchen with plentiful of clean cooking utensils, crockery and cutlery. The beautiful and tranquil surroundings
The room, very cramp for 4 persons. Hard to open the door if somebody is using the sink. Not enough storage space
Beautiful location. Lovely common rooms. Excellent breakfast .
Shared bathrooms with camping guests
It's a good place if you want to have some quietness. A good place for hiking.
It's quite far away from the Windermere station. If you only stay for a day or two, it's not the ideal place to stay. There are plenty of hotels and guest houses in town near the train station.
The location and views were beautiful. We saw deer wandering around regularly. The meals were fantastic and the staff were truly excellent.
Arrive late and parking may well be an issue when it's busy. The room was ridiculously hot at night and the bunkbeds creaked a little bit too much. We were in a smallish room which, with hiking gear, was a little frustrating.
I'm not a regular at YHA properties, but if they are comparable with Windermere I certainly could be. A great set up at a great price in a great location. We were all impressed. Thanks.
The view and quietness to unwind
Friendly, helpful staff, good facilities. Great location. Enjoyed being self sufficient with option of breakfast and evening meal to suit.
The location, friendly staff, plenty showers and toilets, comfy areas to site and relax, not that i had time to do so as very busy schedule.
Having to make my bed when exhausted, but no problem really (understand this is part of hosteling experience lol) and it was too hot in room despite windows being open!
Food was good - great value for money.
No play area. Room was damp, radiator was leaking.
It is not near to the main attraction
Perfect location, very helpful staff, very clean and comfortable. Used the well equipped kitchen. Only there for one night but next day walked the round to Ambleside and back via Wandsfell and Wandsfell Pike. Great walk. Would definitely return.
I had a view of the lake from my bed and the en-suite room was large. The full breakfast was well prepared and self catering kitchen met all my needs. I can not say enough good about the staff, the manager had only been working at the Windermere YHa I loved the view of the lake from my bed, the large bath was wonderful and enjoyed a well prepared breakfast each morning. The self catering kitchen met all my needs, only problem I had was the distance from town I can not praise the management enough. Brand new to the job, that day we found my stored luggage had been picked up along with a school groups luggage, I was due to leave on a train to London in about an hour and my taxi was coming in 5 min. Calls to the school did not help a lot at first, as they could not give out phone numbers of teachers who had been with the group, but manager would not give up. By the time I was leaving on the train I knew my luggage had been found and a school employe was driving to Crewe to meet me before my last train change on London journey. Several staff from YHA called me to confirm I had all the luggage the next day as well as the school. Everyone was so helpful and caring. Maureen Deniston
Friendly, helpful staff.
Nothing to dislike.
Friendliness of the staff despite being very busy with multiple arrivals; value of accomodation; value and quality of the evening meal; place was well decorated and very clean; showers were excellent; lockable bike shed; wonderful views; patio area....
Minor point but the bedroom doors are very noisy when auto-closing and this wakes up guests in other rooms, I'm sure they have to self-close for Fire / Insurance reasons but couldn't they be soft (quiet) close?
very clean, the mattress very comfortable, the duvet very warm
too far away from town centre, need to pay for Wifi
The food was very good! Location lovely, staff lovely! Very clean.
Space in the bedroom, lounge area and self catering kitchen was quiite limited and the latter 2 got very busy! A games room with table tennis would have been really appreciated for older children!
Great building, fantastic views, good open plan self catering kitchen (can watch kids playing at the table when cooking), accessible grounds for kids too. All the staff were very friendly. A great stay, thanks!
The only down side being the need to be car dependent, instead of bus, as the building is a bit too far uphill from the bus stop/main road for young children to walk after a long day.
Nice and friendly service. The room is quite clean and big. The location is far from town centre, but they have fantastic view.
plumbing noises in the night
Friendly environment and the overall cleaned space.
The staff were very friendly, the room was very clean.
Only 1 kettle in the kitchen meant it was tricky making a cup of tea at busy times.
The kitchen was super nice and new, the bar was nice, and the staff were all super friendly
My bed was super hard
