Less than a mile from York’s historic centre, this friendly hotel, built in 1870, retains stained glass windows and a splendid oak staircase. There are good-value rooms and a restaurant and bar.

Charming staff great breakfast cosy room
Ambience, decor and cuisine
Beautiful hotel in a beautiful location. Brilliant value for money and would highly recommend.
Room was comfortable as was the mattress. Breakfast was good plenty of it.
Thought the breakfast was expensive and adding a £5 per tray for room service was disappointing too.
Everything the hotel was lovely. The staff were extremely friendly. The was an xams party on that we was a bit concerned about but we didnt here a thing. Breakfast was lovely. We will definitely be staying here again on our next trip to york.
Good location not too far from York city centre. Excellent room service. Will definitely stay here again
The only downside will be the fact that we could not adjust the central heating but we just left a window slightly open to compensate.
From start to finish we enjoyed our stay. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Good breakfast.
The fact that we only stayed one night!
Although this hotel isn't inside York wall, I think its well worth coming too. It is spacious, pleasant, and quiet. Easy to get too, probably wouldn't cost that much by taxi from the centre. I would come here again (especially as I have stayed in some awful places in York). The breakfast was excellent and plentiful in both quantity and variety (get it with the room it's worth it here). The hotel is very pretty especially when decorated for Christmas, though as parking gets a bit higgledy piggledy after a while I wouldn't get there too late otherwise you might have to park nearby, though they probably aren't always that fully booked also not that many hotels in your have any parking at all so it was good this one did. We had a room with two single beds which were very comfy when compared to allot of hotel beds. The room was nice, the wifi strong, ok tv with a variety of channels. The windows open (we kept our wine cold out of the window), the heating was very toasty (but could have been reduced with the window easily if we wanted too). We didn't eat dinner at the hotel, we went to the pub that's very close on the opposite side. This was very tasty and a pretty pub, we almost didn't get a table though though pretty busy here too. The hotel looked a little bit to fancy for us to dine in to be honest however the prices weren't too bad. Though it also looked very busy.
Bit of a winding route to get to the room but this was only a tiny minor thing, this was mainly due to the hotel being an old pretty building with character and you can't have one without the other and I would have rather had it old and pretty. Parking isn't quite enough for everyone to have a normal space I don't think, we didn't get there that late at all (late afternoon) and we got the last standard space. After that it was a bit of a free for all and I can foresee if you go out later and coming back having trouble or maybe being traped in an area, though we were fine when we left. This hotel is a bit pricy (£135per night) (though allot cheaper than some in York), however we didn't book that far in advance, it was a very busy Christmas shopping weekend in York, booking was at 95% taken all over when I booked, the hotel is a nice above average hotel. I think it was worth the price to be honest and I am a bit of a hotel cheapskate. None of these things would stop me coming to this hotel again.
The welcome we received from all staff, including the manager, was warm and genuine- a reflection of this hotel's unique character and attention to detail. The rooms are individual, (thank goodness!), this is not a Travel Lodge/Premier Inn - It's a lot more though - and for a similar price! The evening meal was very good and nicely presented and served. Breakfast was part self service/part table service and offered numerous options - very flexible! Rooms to the rear and/or facing the courtyard are generally quieter. In summary, we couldn't fault it!
We could not fault this hotel or location. Especially because it had a four poster bed... amazing...
Breakfast staff were wonderful and breakfast was great each morning. The building itself is wonderful, and courtyard off the breakfast area really nice for when its a bit warmer.
You really get left out when staying in a serviced apartment which are located across the road from the hotel. The one we had was no bigger than a hotel room with a sofa room. The hallway leading from one room to the other was the kitchen which was minute. No washing machine, no dishwasher, no tea towel, barely any cooking utensils, only cooking equipment was one frypan and 2 pots which were stored away so high we couldn't reach them anyway. We didn't get any room service on the first day, and to top it off there is no wifi in that building - so whilst the advert says wifi in all areas, what they really mean is wifi only in the main part of the hotel. Definitely not worth what we paid for and due to it being so uncomfortable we left a day early.
Would like a bar/pub atmosphere to have a drink in.
Courteous staff and relaxed atmosphere.
Breakfast was lovely had a seat right next to window and was served very quickly... The room was lovely and Christmasie
food ,evening meal was excellent.service on the Saturday evening was faultless
hair round sink,in bath, dust on the four poster ,and on plug sockets ,tea making facilities not replenished after morning tea,was not pleased that we were notified the day before arrival ,that there was a function and we would be disturbed due to noise volume,we were offered a quieter room but it was downgraded and no refund offered,POOR BAR SERVICE ON SATURDAY EVENING
being on outskirts of town meant it was quiet easy to get buses very helpful staff
Food was nice
Pillows too soft, should have had a choice of them. Couldn't get access to the wifi. Breakfast food area could have been a lot brighter with more labelling
Bus service to York
Fire alarm went off, no staff sense of danger, no visible attired Fire Marshall, no roll call taken, guests seen going back into hotel while alarm still sounding!!Guests milling about hotel car park, Complete and utter shambles.Staff need urgent training on what roll they have.and what to do.This was a false alarm, I would not want to be in this hotel should this have been for real!!!!
Staff were friendly polite, room excellent, made to feel special..excellent all round!
Very good staff, friendly & accommodating. Excellent breakfast. The hotel has a lovely "feel" to it, like an upmarket country home. Just about value for money.
The room was quite small but adequate. The bathroom decoration & fittings were a little tired and in need of an upgrade. The walk into York is at least 30 minutes & we are brisk walkers!! Taxis to and from York city centre are around £7 each way.
Breakfast was good value and bedroom was clean.
The bathroom was a disappointment cracked wash basin plug in bath blocked with hair and whole room in dire need of a revamp.
The Hotel buildings, the dining area and bar and the lovely room with a four poster bed.
They accomadated us with the room we requested and it is a lovely hotel and suited our arrangements while we were there visiting our daughter who is at university in York.
Unfotunately we could not get wifi in our room and the car park is not adequate for the number of guests that can stay especially if there is a wedding.
Breakfast took 30 minutes to arrive after ordering
