Area information
Kalamata is the capital of Messinia. Built over the remains of the ancient town of Farai, it is a modern city that still retains its historic charm.
There are plenty of entertainment possibilities in the city with the various restaurants, bars, cafes and nightclubs. During the summer season, drama groups and theaters put on performances. Those who want to experience more of the nature of the area can travel to the beautiful districts on Mount Taygetus.
Kalamata Castle is definitely worth the visit, with its stunning panoramic views of the historic center of town. The marina in the western part of town is also worthy of a visit, as is the open-air train museum. There are many beaches in the Messinia district, at the Ionio and Messiniako bay.
