If you are in Croatia, a visit to Plitvice Lakes is a must. And if you are in Plitvice Lakes, Villa Lika is the place to stay. The rooms in this lovely, three-story house turned into a bed-and-breakfast are immaculate, spacious, and simply yet beautifully decorated. Our bed was very comfortable, and the view of the Croatian countryside from our balcony was idyllic. Villa Lika has a restaurant on the bottom floor where guests can have breakfast and, for a small additional charge, dinner. Breakfast offerings are varied and delicious. The dinner menu offers only a couple of choices of appetizers, main dishes, and desserts, but the food is truly exceptional. Everything we had was fresh and deliciously prepared, and the wine list was superb. We are pretty certain this is the best restaurant anywhere near Plitvice Lakes, and it would stand out anywhere. Villa Lika is overseen and run by Eva, a young woman who is a true force of nature. She seems to be there 24 hours a day and to address every question or need guests have. During breakfast and dinner she can be seen going from one table to another, easily switching across several languages. Her attitude is best captured by her favorite phrase: "Why not?" Perhaps most important, Villa Lika is a short walk, through some pretty woods, from Entrance 2 to Plitvice Lakes National Park. It is also easy to reach by bus. Coming from Zagreb, the Mukinje bus stop, which is about 50 meters from Villa Lika, is the stop immediately following the stop at Entrance 2. Just tell the driver you want to get off at Mukinje, and it's probably a good idea to show this to him in writing. The next time you're in Croatia, visit Plitvice Lakes and stay at Villa Lika!
