Castle Hotel Grof Degenfeld  

This hotel is in a class of its own. Pretty building surrounded by vast park and vineyards. Singing of the birds in the morning. Wine tasting of estate wines on premises. Pool, tennis courts and table tennis for the active. Good food.

The Hotel has a really lovely setting, on the edge of the village of Tarcel. The house, previously a school of winemaking for Tokaj, is surrounded by mature gardens including massive specimen trees of oak, lynden and hornbeam, full of birds. The grounds blend into vineyards and a wooded hill overlooking the plains to the south. The house itself has been cleverly extended and modernised to provide luxurious rooms and common facilities. This process occured about 11 years ago and sadly some items really need renovation; the bathroom fittings are quite worn out and the rooms should be brought up to date with a simple tea-making facility, rather than a less than exciting mini-bar. There are inevitably some language difficulties with non-Hungarian speakers, and if Grof Degenfeld is to appeal to an international market more effort has to made to cater to a wider range of languages. That said, the staff did make every effort to understand our requests and comments. Given that this hotel is in the heart of the Tokaj wine producing region more effort should be given to providing assistance to visitors wishing to explore Tokaj, even at the risk of compromising the focus on the wines of Grof Degenfeld itself - the experience of which, apart from the wines on the excellent winelist, was far too formal to encourage any sort of casual exploration, with the home winery clearly off-limits to hotel guests unless embarked on a 2 hour indoctrination tour and tasting. The dinner menu was a challenging experience, but we did find some real gourmet gems - the goose liver with peaches poached in Tokaj Azsu (especially with a glass of Tokaj Szamorordni Szaraz) was simply brilliant. Choose carefully and you will be rewarded with some delicious authentic Hungarian dishes and wines; oh, and only drink the local beer!

The website tends to portray the hotel as far more formal and conservative than it is - it is actually a lovely relaxed country retreat, not some gung-ho in-your face "Castle" or even "country club". It is a bit "faceless" - the staff we encountered were helpful without being forthcoming, accommodating without being friendly - with the exception of one of the restaurant staff. Perhaps they are not used to being involved with the guests. It was very quiet when we were there - we were the only guests for most of our stay, so perhaps the staff felt self-conscious and could not relax.

There can be few places as good as this anywhere... The hotel is a step back in time with all modern facilities, spotless rooms.; Amazing restaurant, brilliant wines, helpful and friendly staff all of whom make you feel truly at home. All at affordable prices. Ask for a tour of the cellars. We will be back...

We did not stay long enough...and would have liked to understand more of the Count Degenfeld family history...

Absolutely excellent in every way and we were lucky enough to stay when the hotel was hosting a wine dinner with two vintners (Degenfeld and Malatinscy)

A szálloda a kastély multját jól használja jellege valóban kastélyszáló, az aminek vártuk.

Alt. Fantastisk hotel og pragtfulde omgivelser. Luksuriøs standard. Et superhotel.

Ligger afsides. Det er pragtfuldt I landlige omgivelser. De ansatte gav en fantastisk vejledning og service I forhold til at rådgive om andre restauranter og besøg I vinkældre.

Eigentlich alles! Der Bedienung im Restaurant. Sauberkeit im Zimmer. Die Lage. Alle Mitarbeiter. Kein einzige negative Merkmale. Sehr gerne wieder!!
