The food in Medan is superb, although some rumah makan did not really practice hygiene. Generally, it was easy to find non-halal and halal restaurants. Jong Ah Fie Mansion is awesome. Im impressed that a lot of the things there are well preserved. Istana Maimoon is okay for buying handcrafts. The Graha Bunda Maria Annai Velangkanni church is very unique too. However, I must admit that Lake Toba is the main highlight of my visit there. The lake is super beautiful and I really enjoy my stay and time at Lake Toba - Samosir, Karo, Berastagi etc...will definitely recommend travellers who enjoy immersing themselves in peaceful nature to visit Lake Toba. :) Seriously, the sunrise and sunset are mind blowing.

Medan, indeed all of Sumatra is much cleaner than Java. A lot more pride taken civically. Most folk uses Medan as their entry point to Toba. I just wished I'd spent more time in Medan first. Lovely place.

Medan is a great arrival and exit city for access to Sumatra
There is a good number of attractions for a day tour of the city of Medan itself and I would recommend this.
Aside from this is it best to stay in the places you are visiting.
Unlike what the internet may suggest you definitely cannot do a day tour to Lake Toba from Medan in one day unless you want to spend anywhere from 10 to 17 hours in a car. I do not recommend... at all.
A sunrise hike of Mount Sibayak from Medan is doable but will be very tiring and I would recommend staying in Berastagi instead.

Medan is a humid place. There are little trees in the city. Food is plentiful and tasty. However, due to drainage problem, it has lots of mosquitoes flying around. One can easily be bitten by them. So, always carry a bottle of insect spray.

I was only there overnight, arriving early evening by air and travelling on the next day. My hotel was perfectly located for airport train access. The city is huge and sprawling, can't really judge based on such a limited stay. I did have a very bad experience at the Pinang Baris bus station the day I was leaving. No one else around, just a group of very unfriendly men, waiting to overcharge you. I knew my trip to Bukit Lamang should be around 30,000...they quoted me 150,000, we settled on 100,000. I just wanted to get where I was going but they were very unpleasant. A lot of money was changing hands as I got in the battered old van...they think they've really pulled something over on you. It just confirmed in my mind that I won't be back in Medan or if I am...I will use any mode of transport but them. Crooks.
Very clean room, bedlinen and towels (big cotton towels changed every day), clean bathroom. Free small water bottels. Comfy mattress. Air condition perfect. Big Window to open. Spacy room with wardrobe, desk and chair. Shower with very good water pressure and warm water regulation. WiFi good.
Extraordinary nice and helpful personell, arranged very early taxi transport to the airport for us. Thank you!
ATM, supermarket and restaurants, and the Museum, in short walking distance.
We recommend to stay at this hotel.
Very friendly and helpful staff at the reception. Rooms with electric kettle and cups. Tea, coffee, and water was replenished each day. Very clean. Room size is fair. 5 mins walk from the station. City centre in convenient walking distance. Good base for exploring Medan on foot.
Outstanding daily varying breakfast buffet with a wide variety of cold and cooked dishes to choose from (including spaghetti Bolognese?!). Unfortunately it was so much, it was impossible to try everything.
The staff were the best!!! They were superbly friendly and helpful!! They allow me to leave my luggage there after check out before my flight and I can come and collect later before I leave to the airport. The staff were superbly friendly and helpful throughout the stay. The room was exactly the way it’s booked. Hotel is very near to most places and there’s a good coffee shop nearby. They serve free flow cold drinks and snacks at the lobby.
It has almost everything you can wish for. The breakfast is the best hotel breakfast I have ever experienced. A lot of choice, delicious coffee but best of all outstanding service. Props to all the hotel staff delivering the best and personal service one could possibly ask for. I can’t remember all the names I had good conversations with, but one I do remember is Hambali. His service is more than outstanding.
Friendly reception staff with good English. Very clean throughout with daily room service. Good wifi. Short walk from the railway station and airport train. Good breakfast, good restaurant across the street, plenty of local eateries in side streets (left out of the hotel, first left, if you are OK with eating from a street stall, the first stall on the left will do you a delicious lunch for under a dollar).
Staying around Kualanamu is not optimal, but if it can't be helped, My Studio is a good option. It is large, at the top of a sister hotel in a complex of hotels. The beds are clean and in private cubicles. The staff was kind, they let me check in early. Food in the morning. 50,000 to the airport (transport is a ripoff all around KNO, there is definitely a taxi mafia mindset). Good AC!
Great location for airport with free shuttle and airport to city train. Definitely the best breakfast buffet in all the hotels I've stayed at in Indonesia over 2 months. Great variety of hot and cold foods. Efficient friendly staff.
Restaurant menu also good.. well cooked and presented at a good hotel price. Highly recommend
Location is a mere 5 mins walk from the airport train station. Walkable to the big malls, close to many tourist attractions. Breakfast buffet is pretty big. Smart TV is very functional and allows screen mirroring. Superb value for money, will definitely stay here again if there is a next Medan trip.
Hotel at the airport, perfect for early flights. We got a quiet room at the end of the hallway. Decent rooms, with all that should be expected for this kind of hotel. Nice dinner in the restaurant. We went too early for breakfast, and the hotel provided a nice sandwich to bring.
Room was clean. Staff was friendly and willing to help. The amount of options in Medan seem limited, so this one felt like the best choice. They also have a restaurant, so you can get coffee and breakfast in the morning.
This place provides a very simple option for people passing through Medan airport. The location and ease (it's literally right in the airport) makes this a 10/10 stay for anyone simply passing through.
A little oasis outside of Medan and an escape from the busy streets of Medan. The garden, buildings and rooms are beautiful and comfortable. For the money, it's a great value.
For a airport hotel, this is one of the best or the best i have ever been in. The room is big, air condition, bed is amazing and 24/7 lobby where you can buy drinks and snacks.
I like the location, the rooms were spacious, clean, and well furnished. The hotel was comfortable and the beds were nice, the rooms were also quite quiet.
