The Resort is 'enchanting' - it has elements of an old castle feel to it. The views are stunning from the infinity pool and the balcony on top of the reception area. The villas are faily private - some more than others. Unfortunately, this hotel is very run down and poorly maintained. We arrived at our private villa only to find that they recycled the bed sheets of the previous guests - yellow stains and hairs welcomed us. Villa had cobwebs around and needed dusting. Not enough bath towels provided for comfort and poor selection of toiletries. The bath tub needed a good scrubbing (We refused to use it) as did the toilet bowl. The rooms and the bedding also smelt damp so if you have a sensitive nose this is not the place for you. The outdoor shower in our pool villa had bugs all around it as did the outdoor bed – we could not use it because there were insect droppings on the bed! Service of the hotel staff was poor – most had a poor command of English. When serving tea / dinner staff was not very attentive. Saw them re-using dirty table cloths. Poor selection of breakfast for the price we paid. All in all hotel staff need to learn how to clean properly and provide some level of service.

I loved the setting of the Payogan with all the water and beautiful gardens. We stayed in a 2 bedroom villa with 2 adults and two teenage girls. They had an upstairs room and we had the downstairs room. The private pool was beautiful and the outdoor sitting area. It was very peaceful and quiet. The breakfast was great and the outlook from the dining room in the morning was relaxing. I really did not like the bathroom in our downstairs room. It was large but it was totally enclosed and it had a extemely bad mould mildew smell that seemed to be all through the room and in the pillows. I don't know what other rooms are like it may only be in 207/208 that we stayed in. I know you can take a buggy up to the main building for tea but we wanted to walk. It is very hilly but the paths are very slippery so make sure you have shoes or thongs on with decent grip. The dinner menu is just ok and I think it is very overpriced. The service was very slow most times. It took nearly two hours for a main course and a dessert course. I get a feeling (maybe right or wrong) that it is a training place for new staff. The communication was a bit hard also. The shuttle service drove me crazy waiting for it all time. It is a beautiful place but it is getting very run down and old and it is definately not a 5 star hotel or worth the money we paid. I'm sorry but I wouldn't stay again.

The staff were very friendly and helpful and the stunning traditional architecture all set in a majestic tranquil scenery was wonderful. Only negatives was the garden and paths were in need of some upgrading and food average. A ten minute stay out of Ubu, so no able to walk into town.

The hotel was very beautiful and atmospheric - wonderful gardens and pools. It was amazing to shower in the open air and feel meters away from dense rainforest. The staff were wonderful and nothing was too much trouble. We loved it!

Very spacious and luxurious in the spaciousness of each villa. Delightful setting. Very tranquil. Fantastic massage/ spa centre Extremely slippery on the paths and many steps between the villas and main pool/restaurant area. Our private pool was in need of some maintenance but we almost had the main pool to ourselves so it didn't matter

Very well kept grounds and excellent staff. The villas are on the side of a river gorge overlooking the valley and rice fields. It is cut into the surrounding forest. The place needs some key upgrades to the facility which is aging in some ways. The shower/bath fixtures need replacing. There was painting that needed to be finished in the room. The television reception was very poor and there is no internet access in the rooms, you have to walk up the hill to the lobby for internet. I would recommend tyhe place to others if the price is right but the location and above mentioned issues bring the value into question.

The setting was indeed beautiful with greenery surrounding the rooms. The staff is friendly but had a huge language barrier which mqde communicating with them a little complicated. We stayed at a villa at the Payogan, cleanliness is at a bare minimum we had patches of dirt on drapes attached to the bed, we had a power cut in addition. The electricity was out for a couple of hours which is unacceptal nomatter what ammount of stars the hotel has. The rooms are old with traces of humidity on the walls. The safe was broken. The hotel is not at all for people with handcaps it is not equiped with wheels chair entrances nor are the rooms.

A beautifully designed resort with excellent, accommodating staff. Not ideal for young children, a great deal of steps and no kids club.

My Husband and I stayed 5 nights at the Payogan and had a wonderful time. The staff were very friendly and very helpful. The food was lovely and we had room service on several occasions. Over all the room was comfortable and our private pool was amazing we would reccommend the Payogan to friends and family. The only problem we had was with a faulty air conditioner that was leaking even after we contacted the maintenance people, the room had a slightly mouldy smell which we burnt incence to cover. When we arrived at our room the path was covered with rotting fruit which was left there for a full day before it was cleaned up, the smell wasn't very pleasant but was cleaned up by the next morning.

The Bedroom and Bathroom was large and spacious, the bed was four poster with netting around which was romantic and protective from mosquitos! The Bath tub, shower and toilet were located outdoors. The Bath tub overlooked the valley of trees, when there were no moths, bugs etc around it was idyllic and romantic. The hotel prepared our room with petals on the bed and bath tub and infinity pool with candles and petals which was a lovely touch There were a lot of bugs and moths outside at night time. The food served at dinner wasn't the best meal we had in Bali but the service was great!

The layout of the property was lovely and there was a view from every angle. The room was lovely and completely adequate for our needs. The staff were beautiful and totally accommodating as are all the Balinese. Our 3yo had a ball although a lot of the paths and steps were pretty precarious so he needed supervision and help most of the time. Otherwise, it was great, we wished we had booked for longer. The food was average and a little overpriced.

Staff were excellent; location stunning; room exceptional. Good location to visit the master carvers and silver and gold smiths. At first we thought it too far out of Ubud but after visiting Ubud for the first time in ten years, we were glad to be away from it. It was an appalling experience and we never want to go back; they have ruined what was so charming and wonderful about it.

The hotel is unbelievably beautiful. Lots of moss covered stone and jungle overgrowth. Very romantic! And our room was top notch. Amazing views and tons of space. Really amazing. The wifi was only in the lobby and it was spotty. Also, I loved the idea of an outdoor shower and bathtub and it was certainly inviting, I found I didn't really want to use it at night. Not really the hotels fault, just not something I'm used to.

The "outdoor" bathroom is an amazing experience, the beautiful marble like sunken bath with open outlook to the forrest makes for a very enjoyable experience. Breakfast was very basic and the menu did not change over our 3 day stay. Staff were initially very slow to act on requests made but this could be put down to the general atmosphere of the place and possible language barriers.
