This place has so much character. From the moment you drive down the driveway towards the car park you know it's one of those special places. For anyone who appreciates history and staying in a old castle/abbey as opposed to the modern soulless hotels then this is the place for you. It is said that there is a core of their customers that come back to this place year after year and I can see why. The majority of those people would be 50+, if the age of the clientele the night my wife and I stayed there is anything to go by (Not just Irish, but many tourists from around the world). The staff are very warm and friendly as is the african grey parrot that sits in the reception lobby talking away. The bedrooms have old furniture (all part of the character) and if you are lucky enough to get a room at the front of the hotel, have lovely views of the grounds and into Clifden Town. We had breakfast in the restaurant which was buffet style and plentiful. It too has a special atmosphere, with the friendly staff and buzz of chat from the guests. We did not use any other facilities as this was a one night getaway and we decided to dine out in the town. I definetely would come back. The only thing I didn't like was the shower in the bathroom. It was old and tempermental and took ages for the water to get warm. You have to stand under it twice as long as other modern showers to get the soap off you, due to the trickle of water that comes out of it......maybe it was just our room??

We went during the Arts Week and the atmosphere and ambience of Clifden were very well replicated in the hotel. Our room was really excellent as was the food at dinner. I felt however that breakfast could have been better, and the ''tinned fruit salad ''let the place down .On general our third visit to the Abbeyglen was a happy one ,and one that we would hoope to repeat.

Beautiful, spacious room, very comfortable. Lovely atmosphere with friendly staff, good location handy to village, good selection and food for breakfast. Shower head in walk in shower is too high on the wall so it was difficult to keep my hair from getting soaked.

We arrived @12 to attend a wedding being held elsewhere. I hadn't realised that check in was after3 o clock but the kind Receptionist Martina I think, accommodated our early arrival. We enjoyed the romantic setting, fireplace in the spacious bedroom, and it was very very relaxing. it wasn't clear that check in was later than other hotels

The castle feel and the room was great. The bed was not comfortable at all and was sagged in the center.

Lovely quiet location. Excellent staff and service, a "can do" attitude, fabulous breakfast and superb "fine dining" in the evenings - a truly lovely holiday in a beautiful spot. Teaching Gilbert, the celebrity parrot a few additional colourful expressions was a source of much fun!!!. The only fly in the ointment was unreliable/erratic internet connections - which for us was important as we had to stay in touch with our business. The management was very helpful and they are looking into improving this..

The staff were fantastic. The afternoon tea was a lovely touch. We also loved Gilbert. The proper hairdryer in the room was a welcome surprise. Breakfast was excellent. The childrens' menu could have had a better choice E.G. a pasta dish. Not all kids are chip mad. That said, the goujons and chips were excellent.

Old world, old school feel Friendly helpful staff Excellent food Lovely lobby parrot! Nice acoustic music in the bar and restaurant, traditional Irish, solo piano etc. Soothing, not screeching! Dim room lighting Internet wifi only in lobby. Like most Irish properties, a little cool for a December visit. These are minor annoyances only, no serious gripes.

Lovely hotel, old fashioned luxury. This hotel is perfect for a relaxing or romantic break. The room was spacious and comfortable. The staff were great. Afternoon tea with scones served from 3 to 5 pm (free!) was a lovely touch, we had ours on a comfy sofa infront of an open fire. I wouldn't call this hotel 'grand' but it is charming. I would reccommend it for anyone that needs a break or for people who like their holiday somewhere close to the great outdoors, clifden is beautiful.

The hotel staff really go out of their way to make guests feel welcome. There is a great atmosphere in the hotel bar, with top class musical entertainment provided. We had a lovely room, with a fire and couches, free standing bath in the bathroom and robes provided. We got terrific value for money and really enjoyed our break. Some areas of the hotel could do with being refurbished.

The owners and staff were very freindly and most helpful. It was close to the town of Clifden but felt as if it was in the country. The breakfasts were very nice wirh lots to eat. A few negitives The hotel information booklet was not up to date. The time for the St Joseph's Church Sunday Mass said 11.00am and it was in fact 11.30am. A bit of a nusiance when planning your day. I believe I read in one of the websites that the hotel had a shuttle bus and it did not have one. I also felt that the hotel needed a bit of TLC.
