Belfast
This small, family-run country house is on the edge of Lough Swilly, set on 18 acres of mature trees and lawns leading to the one mile-long beach. Fort Royal is renowned for peace and quiet in comfortable surroundings, and for good food and wine. Walk on the beach, sit by the fire with a good book, or look down to the sea from the terrace. The village of Rathmullan is a 10-minute walk away. On the grounds are a 9-hole pitch-and-putt course, a hard tennis court, a walled kitchen garden and an arboretum. Portsalon, Rosapenna, Ballyliffen, and Dunfanaghy golf courses are within a one hour drive. Hotel Rooms: 11 We're sorry, but it is currently not possible to make reservations for this hotel.

Hotel was beautiful - full of atmosphere - you could almost imagine ladies in the gardens at the big oak tree in the eighteeth century standing in their beautiful dresses. Fantastic beach - probably one of the nicest in the world!! Staff were brilliant. Setting of hotel perfect. Location perfect. Spotlessly clean. Very comfortable rooms. We did not eat evening meal in the hotel but other guests were very complimentary about their meal. Great breakfast. We will be back as it was a brilliant and enjoyable stay.

I first stayed in this hotel in 1991 and was delighted to return after 20 years to find it largely unchanged. The location is delightful. The grounds are excellent (containing a tennis court and small golf links) and you can walk down to the beech in less than five minutes. The views from the grounds and from the hotel are splendid. The hotel has the quiet feel of a country house rather than a hotel and is a very good place to relax. The owner and his staff were all extremely pleasant and we had a good dinner in the restaurant (and there are alternative places within a shortish drive). We stayed here as part of a tour of Donegal; you can visit the Glenveigh national park which is about 40 minutes away and explore the north Donegal coast. Absolutely no issues.
