As we checked in, it quickly became apparent that despite phoning ahead when we made the original booking, our 6 year old had not been included in the booking and there was no note of the call we had made. We should have realised when I had phoned a couple of days before to find that the dog wasn't booked in that there may have been an issue but unfortunately didn’t make the link.
This was a real shame as it meant that our first impressions of the owner were not warm and welcoming; instead we found him to be extremely condescending. It was quite clear that the mistake was ours, but rather than the chap being friendly, supportive and understanding; he made us feel unwelcome and like a group of naughty children, asking us to wait in the lounge while our mistake was rectified. There was a feeling of causing him stress and hassle and I personally found this very upsetting, especially when he suggested that our son sleep with his grandparents as it would be difficult for him to relocate him with us.
We feel that the owner might be better not having a pet option in his policy as he made it very clear that pets were not to be seen or heard. We understood his policy on feeding the dog outside, but struggled to understand why pets were allowed when he had so many horror stories to share with us to provide us with examples of the terrors that he had found in the room previously occupied by pets and was obviously very keen to avoid with our dog.
Once we got into our bedroom, we read the house manual. This was full of pedantic messages which again made us feel uncomfortable. Despite the book stating that complimentary tea and coffee was available; guests were encouraged to make a donation to charity - a little odd?
After a short family meeting, we decided to cut our stay short. We didn't feel that we would be able to relax at this property and were unimpressed with the tired looking rooms, which were seriously in need of some updating.
We quickly realised that our family pet had not been included in the various bookings we had made on this trip and so phoned ahead of our stay to rectify this. The owner was very helpful and reassuring, happily amending our booking with just a small additional charge for the pet's stay; we were delighted.
On arrival, we were impressed with the look of the house and gardens. We enjoyed seeing red deer and a red squirrel in a peaceful and beautiful location.
The breakfast was delicious and the lady of the house looked after us very well. Although, it might have been useful to have a menu to select from as the young lady serving only offered eggs and bacon, but it became obvious from the plates of others that there was a larger selection of hot breakfast items on offer, if you asked for them specifically.
