We liked the Castle setting.
Dusty, outdated, not a great value.
Great entrance and grounds, and a genuine castle experience.
A bit run down and worn
Excellent price for two double bedrooms and self catering suite. Lovely surroundings.
No wifi in the self catering apartments, wifi at castle is limited to 20 minutes free per day.
I loved everything, the place and its space around it and this rare quality of being local. Fabulous feel to it. Very, very friendly, professional staff. Beautiful horses and passionate Clare in Markree Stable.
The walking map and especially walking route should be clearly marked in the stones as for instance we walked into gates which looked like private property.
Outside appearance, gardens, common areas are all great. Beautiful stained glass, staircase and woodwork. Lots of seating areas for relaxing.
Booked three rooms one for ourselves, one for our son and daughter in law, and one for our adult daughter. Huge spider in tub of one of the bathrooms. Carpets worn and furniture needed a good polishing.
lovely welcome from receptionist beautiful comfortable accommodation extremely clean great facilities in the cottage the magnificence of the castle itself and its interesting history
trying to get from the hotel to the cottages late at night in darkness. no wifi in the cottage
Restaurant with very good plates a la carte and good service.
Continental breakfast buffet choice bit under the style of the place.
Staying in a castle was a fantastic experience. the property was fascinating to explore. Driving through the gates and surrounding property including the gardens, bridge and stream is something that we will always remember. The stair case and the beautiful stained glass window was something to see and our evening meal sitting under a chandelier made us feel very special.
There was nothing that we didn't like.
The castle was magical, isolated and surrounded by green fields. Dinner and breakfast were great, though dinner was a bit pricey. The room had a great view of the gardens and river.
Wi-Fi wasn't at it best even at the common areas (lobby), but after all - it's a castle, so it was nice to disconnect from the world for the night:)
Grounds apartment was spacious and beautiful. Wish we had food to make use of the kitchen.
There was no wifi in apartment.
I'd been to Markree Castle for tea before, and was thrilled to see that they had lodging available when everything else in Sligo town was booked. It was a stroke of luck - such a special experience for my six year old daughter to stay in a castle. The staff arranged for a local taxi (Mark Walsh) to take us to different parts of Sligo that I requested. They couldn't have found a better guide for us!
all of the outside was fabulous - I wanted to stay!!! forever!! Staff were really great, good communicators, pleasant, jolly, helpful, courteous - a real pleasure to speak to. the enormous fireplaces and a real wood fire the lovely castle pussy cat outside car parking was great views to die for!!
dated interior, things left on floors etc looked like rubbish, breakfast very sparse, I have stayed in other castles and they are always stocked with lots of books, big deep couches, brighter interiors, and altogether a more luxurious feel.
We booked the apartment. ...practical, clean, functional. ... suited us...
Wifi only in the castle....should be extended it to the apartment
The place is beautiful. The woodwork, the furnishings, the rooms are wonderful. Well worth the price.
The castle was beautiful and the fact that we had a 10 and 8 year old, nothing beats staying in an actual castle! We stayed in the tower room. It had plenty of room for our family of four, the room was clean and the staff was very helpful and accomodating. We used this place as a stopover, so I can't review how close it was to points of interest, but all in all it was a great experience. If you are looking for a "castle" experience, this is it!
We loved our time at the Markree Castle! As long as your realize this huge property is a work in progress and they are restoring it, you will be amazed! The staff is extrodinarily helpful and I loved hearing some of the stories about the castle. Our room was large and very comfortable and the grounds are beautiful.
There are some rough edges. After all, the castle is hundreds of years old. If you don't expect perfection, you will love it!
Large, quirky rooms. My parents room was two storied with a living room. We stayed in the family room at the top of the tower. This was the only affordable castle I could find in Ireland- all the others seem to have gone down the 5 star/boutique route with prices to match. Also we got in late (21:20) after a long day of driving, so the receptionist took our bags and rushed us through to the dining room before the kitchen closed.
We missed the entrance when we first arrived and ended up driving a while until we could find an appropriate place to turn around. Keep your eyes peeled to the right when heading from Sligo! Rooms are a little dated, but that's probably why it's still affordable.
Nice location. Beautiful building. Good food. Being able to bring your pet is a huge selling point.
Some staff not overly friendly, as if they just don't want to be there (only some staff). One lady didn't even look up from the computer monitor when we came in one evening and as we was going up the stairs it seemed she was on facebook. Hilarious, even a nod would have been nice. Parts of the building decor very dated (and not in a cool authentic castle way, just bad 80's dated)
My husband and I stayed just one night and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We loved the history, the architecture and the trappings of the castle. The owners have done am amazing job to restore the castle albeit into a hotel. The ornate ceilings and wood panelling give it grandure and yet the seemingly random placement of rooms makes it very quirky with short staircases running up or down to different rooms. The massive open fireplace burning brightly in the reception hall was very welcoming and certainly added to the general ambience of the castle. The staff were very friendly and helpful.
There was nothing worth complaining about.
Our first castle in Ireland, and all good about location, environs and room. Staff very friendly and helpful.
Dinner in the evening was quite slow, but the food was excellent.
Just being in a real castle was amazing. The staff were super and the food was excellent. Parking was right outside, very handy.
She's in need of what my wife calls a "make over" in paint, refinishing of gorgeous woodwork, inside the lift (really yucky), toilets, shower heads, and so forth. You get the shabby chic picture. But we had a great stay considering all of this.
Beautiful castle on a farm with many activities available. Very picturesque. Front desk staff very nice and helpful
The rooms are a little dated, granted it is a very old building. But the mattresses could be more comfortable and the decor could use some updating (carpets, furniture, accents, etc.) But, overall beautiful place to stay
We loved everything about this hotel. I will certainly be bringing other groups of friends here. We had a wonderful stay, wonderful food and wine, loved the walks in the gardens and environs. We all had beautiful views from our rooms. The castle itself is welcoming and lovely. Staff were so helpful. It was a relaxed atmosphere and we had everything we needed.Exploring the surrounding area and the neolithic sites was such a treat.
Some rooms still needing some TLC, but were still very comfortable.
Staying in a castle was memorable. The grounds were beautiful.
Our room #8 (Johnny Cash Room) could have been better decorated. Couldn't always find service assistance at front desk and bar.
