Was greeted by a lovely lady, Maura. I wanted to put her in my pocket and take her home. A lovely, friendly, welcoming lady who went above and beyond. Initially I had chosen this guesthouse because it was the best price by far so we were only expecting the basics. There was a beautiful lounge room, and a well facilitated kitchen. The bedroom was spacious and clean with ensuite, loads of storage and a bed that was hard to leave. Ciaran the owner was so approachable with a lovely northern accent. The location was a walk to the centre of waterford (in heels even) yet in a quiet corner so no noisy traffic or drunkards stumbling past your window at all hours of the morning. Also, we met some lovely international characters in the common room giving the place a great atmosphere. This room was two floors below any bedroom so again you can be as chatty as you want in there while the other guests hang in the lounge room upstairs or sleep soundly in the bedrooms further above.
As every good review has to be critical one aspect that could have been improved would be the weather. But then again what else would you expect for a January in Waterford.
Lovely, happy, easy-going and homely atmosphere in Portree House. I had a relaxing stay, and the staff went out of their way to help me with my travel plans. I will most definitely be back!
it should not be acceptable to provide accommodation done so cheaply.the decor is dated. the rooms are tiny.beds squashed into them.shower dirty.windows that didn't lock.and freezing cold. never again
Very friendly staff and a generally welcoming and relaxed atmosphere. a proper way to relax with your own comforts.
Kitchen area in hostel needs an extra hob for cooking, that is pretty much it.
Location was great, close to the station and city center. We found a great restaurant which was very close to the guesthouse. We only had the one night but would like to go back.
Staff were friendly and the guesthouse is in the city centre, closed to restaurants and pubs.
The room was cold and we ask for an extra heating; there was no heating in the bathroom either. The breakfast doesn't worth the price as the irish one was too cooked.
This guesthouse is like a home. Has a very cosy feel and most helpful staff. Our room was quiet, comfy and very clean. We will be back.
Comfy bed, quiet room - I could hear the birds singing in the garden in the morning! Very friendly staff - willing to help with any queries. Cosy hostel facilities - there is even an Aga stove! This was my first visit but I will be back!
That I couldn't stay longer :-(
Friendly staff, use of kitchen, location. Very comfortable bed.
Room was a bit shabby. The main problem was the cold, there are small storage heaters but the one in my room didn't work.
We found the location great and easy to find. Atmosphere very homely. Accompanied by very friendly staff. Slept soundly in comfortable beds. Food and catering was spot on. We were very much so catered to our needs being vegetarians. Lovely to eat our breakfast looking at the view outside the window of the back garden. Lounge and kitchen was warm and inviting, was able to prepare hot drinks etc at any time. Wishing Ciaran and staff all the best on their new adventure! Would definatley reccomend to others and look forward to coming back in the near future.
Wifi connection wasn't great, but I'm sure can be corrected.
Staff were excellent Breakfast was good Beds were comfortable Parking was free and easily accessable.
Environment needs a bit of a facelift.
Staff were very helpful and friendly. The room was bright and clean. Shower worked perfectly. Very quiet neighborhood.
Street lights just outside window. A bit cold at night - heating didn't come on until early in the morning.
Quiet setting with central location beside the main bridge, but without traffic or other noise. Staff were helpful and courteous.
Parking in back yard was free but gate was open all night . I feel a lockable gate would increase security and peace of mind. Having said that I encountered absolutely no problems.
Cheap, comfortable, nice obliging manager.
Had a lovely stay at Portree Guesthouse last weekend. Rooms were spacious, clean and very warm. Breakfast was delicious and great value, hospitality shown from the new owner was second to none. Wishing him and all involved the best of luck with the new venture and we will certainly be back when we visit Waterford again.
The only good think is the pub near the guesthouse...
Dirty bathroom.. Very small room. Dirty bed.. I sleep whit dress up. As soon as possible I post the photo of the guesthouse. Very very bad
location- close to bus and trains clean
poor wifi no kettle/ bottle water in room single room was quite small
The beds were comfortable and the guesthouse is situated in a quiet part of Waterford, though only a stones throw from the heart of the town, and close to the railway and bus stations. There is a lovely garden which can be enjoyed by the guests. Good value accommodation for those on a budget.
LOCATION VALUE FOR MONEY FREE WIFI PRIVATE PARKING NICE BREAKFAST
Ciaran and the gang were all lovely and super friendly, we were well placed for adventuring round Waterford. The Irish breakfast was very tasty -sorry to not have been up early enough to have it every day (we're late sleepers) but great to have access to the kitchen to come and go as we please. The same goes for the no curfew policy which came very much in handy as we were in Waterford to Perform and didn't have to worry about coming back late. The room was a tad small but very comfy and I can't complain really considering the price. I can highly recommend Portree guest house as long as you like your accommodation functional not flauncy.
Towels were momentarily forgotten but we did check in early and it was sorted in a jiffy.
The staff are very friendly and the rooms are very clean. The beds were also really comfortable!
The only things that I would put down would be the power of the shower and also there was only a mirror in the bathroom, little annoying if there are a few girls getting ready which was the case with my group
friendly welcome form the staff who were more than willing to help with my requests
having to climb so many stairs to get to my room
Within walking distance of everything we wanted to see and do. New owner working very hard to look after his guests
Lovely atmosphere...really relaxed. Loved the brekkie for 7 quid. Didn't need to eat again till dinner! The place is a bit old fashioned but it brought back memories of family holidays when I was a kid. So central too...five minutes to the city centre walking.
