For budget accommodation you can't go wrong with Al Cazar Hotel. Set ten minutes walk from the Old City in the Palestinian Neighborhood of Wadi Al Joz. I was really impressed at the friendliness of the staff here. From when we walked in the door to when we walked out we felt welcomed and appreciated. We stayed at the Al Cazar Hotel for 5 nights as we toured around Jerusalem and Dead Sea area. The hotel provided us with travel information and other information we needed like bus times and local food places. You get what you pay for in terms of accommodation. It's not the King David Hotel, but it is still good. The beds get changed everyday, and you get fresh towels on most days. I felt it was good value for money; certainly better than you would get at a hostel. For 6 nights we payed just over $600 dollars for 3 people. The breakfast served daily was excellent. They had a wide spread and range from local Palestinian and Israeli cuisines, to traditional breakfast items like cereal, coffee, toast etc. The food was really good, but the breakfast menu tends to stay roughly the same so after 6 nights you start to crave a variety. There is free tea and coffee available 24/7 which is a nice treat after a long walk through the city of Jerusalem. We chose to talk everywhere instead of hiring a car or taxis. Even though it seemed scary walking through an Arab territory, I was amazed at the friendliness of people. I would ask for directions and most people will give advice with a smile. I strongly recommend this place to any tourist coming to Jerusalem. We were in Israel for 2 weeks. This was by far the best place. These aren't really things I don't like about the hotel, but some things to be mindful of. 1. The hotel is situated in Palestinian Territory (it can be a different world if you're not used to it) and is surrounded by a few mosques (I am a volunteer teacher in Egypt at a christian school surrounded by 6 mosques, I was used to it) but it can certainly give you a wake up call at 4:00 am in the morning. 2. The breakfast is very good for the price you pay; however after a week of staying there you can get bored with the menu. 3. We had three people in our room. Fresh towels were brought every day, however some days only two towels were given, and other days none were given at all. 4. The hotel is quite a distance from the city life. Once you enter East Jerusalem it feels like a totally different world. But don't be afraid, the people are beautiful! 5. They only served food for breakfast, their kitchen wasn't open at night time. However they can order take away food like pizza's etc and falafel etc from a local Arab restaurant that does delivery.

Hotel staff excellent, and very helpful. Inviting guests for hot soup to warm up in tv lounge, on a cold night. Good for advice too. Breakfast was plentiful and excellent. I would suggest they change the breakfast times to 7pm until 9.30pm, as a of guests (me included) had 8.30am tour times to fulfill. The actual breakfast time was 7.30am, making for a bit of rush to shovel it all in. I stayed 5 nights, and at first I was a little disappointed with the room: poor state of decor, 1 tv channel, etc, but in the end I found the room comfortable and cosy. Although the room was heated (for a January trip), the reception area was quite cold. The room cost wasn't exactly cheap, but it was still quite competitive for Jerusalem. Maybe a makeover, and nicer rooms, would justify a slight rise in room rates. You can safely walk to Damascus Gate in about 25 minutes, though the staff will book taxis for you. I walked back late at night from Zion Gate, and past the Mount of Olives side, without any safety issues. I really liked Jerusalem, and if I do come back again, I would stay at the Alcazar again. Highly recommended. See above. Not much to complain about; just suggestions for improvement.

The hotel is old . however, most shocking is that I saw guests from the Indin tour leave unfinished toast on the table. The manager saw that the toasts were not finished, brought them into a table to give other guests. I felt that several meals were actually reused, from previous day's leftover. Then they are re-served on small plates for guests. This is unsanitary and betrays guests' trusts. The location of the hotel is very close to the old town. However, the road to the old town is difficult to reach and pedestrians' routes are often packed with cars. Having to walk on streets with cars passing by was not very safe, and we had to walk approximately 20 minutes. If I had to choose again, I would not opt for this hotel.

As others have said this hotel is not up to European standards in terms of its decor etc. but once you get over the culture shock you can appreciate the hospitality and the lovely breakfast. Mouldy shower curtain and bath. Tatty decor and having to waste lots of water waiting for it to heat up. Walking back from town at night was not comfortable as a woman on her own.

Very friendly staff and great vakue for money. Getting there from the airport can be a bit of a problem as the Hotel is in east Jerusalem. I took the shared taxi and the driver was only prepared to take me to the Damascus Gate. I decided to get out of the Taxi at the American Colony Hotel and take one of their local arab Taxi drivers for the last part of the journey. This worked well and you get to have a look at the wonderful American Colony Hotel!

One of the more cheaper hotels. You know you pay not much, so don't expect a castle or very nice neighbourhood. There is a sidewalk but cars are parked overthere so you have to walk in the streets. This can be very tricky, esp. In the evening!

While choosing the hotel in Jerusalem, the main criteria was price, so I've decided to stay in Alcazar, and now can say it was a good decision: 1. good rooms for this price, even with WiFi (not only in lobby); 2. good breakfast; and even afternoon soup :)) 3. very good and nice stuff: the best I've seen during all my trips; 4. good location: just 10 mins walk to Old City; 5. parking places available near the hotel; For letting this hotel to become better: 1. sometimes there were problems with hot water: you have to wait 5 mins to take a shower; 2. no enough napkins during breakfasts; 3. sometimes problems with light in the passages on the 3rd floor.
