This highland hotel offers an outdoor hot tub and traditional Icelandic lamb and seafood dishes. Located by the Hvita River, it is just 3 km from Gullfoss Waterfall. Wi-Fi is free.
Score from 141 reviews Very good
Less than 5 minutes’ drive from the Great Geysir, these fully equipped cottages are set along the Tungufljot River, 9 km from Gullfoss Waterfall. Each offers a full kitchen and furnished terrace.
Score from 49 reviews Excellent
The multi media centre next to hotel was very informative on movement of earth surface plates, formation of volcanoes, earthquakes and geysers. Breakfast excellent. Thermal pool and sauna very good
Accommodation some distance from reception, dinning room and thermal pool
Excellent Location next to the Strokkur Geysir
The room was very simple, the Wifi didn't work. Too expensive.
Right across from Geysir, view from bungalow rooms, hot tub
WIFI did not work at all in bungalow, and in restaurant signal was too weak to connect. Restaurant service was slow. Cod entree was good but langoustines on top were raw(were supposed to be cooked) and waiter would not do anything about it.
This hotel is close to Geysir.
Our booking form stated that our room would have wooden floors - it did not. We were dismayed to find ourselves away from the main hotel in an upmarket hostel like complex; it did say away from main building on the form but where we were looked like a building site. We asked to put drinks on our room at the bar and were told we couldn't because of 'politics'. It is the only hotel where we had to pay at check in. This cemented the idea it was really a hostel. The food was fine, but service was poor and locals were served before us despite arriving after. Wish I had more characters to complain.
Not much to like: overcrowded tourist buses dumping people everywhere, facilities not working as listed at right, unhelpful reception staff (who said "Thats the way we like it, ching ching" When another bus pulled up.... There are signs in every room saying "hot water can take up to 20 minutes to come to your tap, please be patient" No reply to my email complaints after the stay. Avoid this hotel, so many other nice experiences in Iceland, but this was our low point
a. Internet was not working in the room at all. Reception said it had "stopped working that morning" (wink wink). I had booked the hotel since it had internet in the rooms as I had business to do next morning. Reception said internet would be available in the lobby. I saw several guests complaining about the issue. b. Sauna was not working. Your reception also said it "had stopped working that morning". c. Sauna showers, we waited for 30 minutes, there was no hot water to come ever (there is no mixer valve in the pipe anyway to adjust temp) d. Hot water wait time in the rooms. While it does come after 15 minutes, this is not something tolerable in a room in your price category. Especially after being freezing from waiting from sauna so long. (No one the other hotels we stayed at in Iceland suffer from this, I assume a pre heater or circulation loop would easily solve this kind of thing.) e. No local maps available at reception. Another standard of hotel in your price range. f. Heating did not function Room 17 g. The sound insulation between the rooms is not sufficient - we listened to the couple next to us 'having fun' for quite some time. h. And, when I had my business to do at 7 am, I came up and found the lobby locked. So, I stood in the cold outside the door trying to connect to their signal. A real fab experience...
No wifi the entire stay- the receptionist /manager couldn't care less. No double beds. Spa - only tepid "hot tub", no towels- receptionist/manager told us to grab our wet towels from the room. The spa was supposed to be open until 23:00, defacto closed already at 21:00 with no one to talk to. Rude and arrogant manager, didn't want to assist with anything. For is way too expensive and the service in the restaurant is very slow. Rooms are not even remotely like in pictures. A complete tourist trap!!
the wifi wasnt working well in the rooms
For Iceland not a typical bad hotel.
Staff can be more service oriented (as everywhere in Iceland).
Poor wifi connection
Helpful staff, excellent meal
When we arrived the hotel had made an error with our booking and there was no room available. The member of staff apologised and quickly found another hotel with a room within 3 minutes drive. Hotel Geysir accepted it was their error, the outcome could have been worse!
The Geysir hotel is in a fantastic location. It is right next to the Geysers and only a few miles from the Gullfoss waterfall. It was great to watch the geyser through the restaurant window while having breakfast and it was nice to be able to get to Gullfoss early in the morning before the tour buses arrived. We stayed in a cabin that was generally very clean and was quite spacious. I think that it was the perfect place to stay on the golden circle.
If you are expecting the Ritz Carlton, you may be disappointed. The wifi was spotty unless you were in the main building. The bathrooms were functional and pretty clean, but there was some mold in the shower crevices. It takes 15 minutes or so for the hot water to become hot. The hot tub and steam room were not very nice. If you have a little more of a sense of adventure though, and realize that this is a hotel in a really remote area, you will be pleased with how clean and comfortable the rooms are - and how great the location is.
The room in the cabins near the river are nice. Clean an big. There is free shower cream, shampoo and more. They have a little hotpot and a sauna for the guests. The breakfast is amazing!
Its really expensive, it could be less than that. You only have good WiFi connection in the restaurant. The tv in our cabin wasn't working.
This is the old 'bait and switch' routine. They lead you to believe you are staying it the old historic hotel, but when you get there, you are actually staying in a new building that is down the street from the property. The new building is really nice, but if this is not what you are expecting, then you will be dissapointed.
It is a great place if you want to watch the geysir in times with less people around since you have only 1-2 minutes walk from the cabins. I'm not sure if we will stay again there (see the minus) but we loved it the years ago
- the pool is gone. It was told that the pool was broken. Instead repairing it it was filled with gravel and a barbecue put on it. BIG MINUS since the price for thestay is really on the higher end and increased again - our toilet was broken. We told the staff three times about this but nobody cared about. Nothing happend. We had to stay the night without toilet and more: we had even to close the water to prevent the flood in our room. BIG MINUS that nobody took care and we had to pay the FULL price.
The hotel is right across the road from the geysir, and you can actually watch it going off from the restaurant. The restaurant is nice, with really good food. Breakfast is OK. The rooms seem to all be camping cabins, which are really small. They are actually more like hotel rooms in cabins than actual camping cabins. It's not a luxury hotel, but for what it is it's actually pretty good. A bit on the expensive side, but other than that I had no complaints.
Nice location across the road from the geyser. Very nice dinner.
Service at the restaurant was slow.
Waited a long time to hot watet at the shower Floor room very dirty under bed
Very comfortable and perfect short distance to the geysir.
Friendly staff. Restaurant food and breakfast excellent.
Room was ok but in a separate building. No sign of the pool.
Comfortable accommodation with good range of tv channels. Nice choice of breakfast options. Staff very friendly. Good location to stay, particularly if you're planning to drive Kjolur highland route to northern Iceland.
Accommodation block some yards from main building (which was made up of restaurant, bar area and reception).
excellent location just across the road from impressive geysirs excellent dinner, friendly staff, good hot-pool (unfortunately not outside)
hotelrooms at the moment in a separate building, awaiting a new wing
location of the hotel. friendly staff, facilities available,
The hotel photograph is totally not correct. We were asked to pay the bill and then told we had to return to the car and drive to an annex which had very little charm at all. The front door was left open all night, there was not even a glass in the room let alone kettle. The hotel makes more money providing meals for the coach tours so has changed the whole hotel into a restaurant. I did say we were not satisfied and it was false advertising showing a building as a hotel but not actually staying there, but I do not think it was taken seriously. It is the same as provding a photo of a castle in our town and saying it is our house. If they had told us before we arrived that we were not actually staying at the hotel I would then had the option to go somewhere else. Out of 14 nights in Iceland, this place had the least charm and worst value for money.
Very friendly and helpful staff. While we had to leave very early, they even prepared us a breakfast box to take-away. Customer service all the way. Rooms are comfortable and clean.
