From the beginning there were problems. We had emailed them several times since booking the hotel a month or so ago to make sure they had adequate facilities etc and had received no response. Our flight was moved due to the strike on the 12th and so we were travelling from Milan, and would not be at the apartment until at least 9pm. At the last minute, our requests for a late check in were all denied, leaving us somewhat high and dry as there would be no-one there to meet us. Thankfully booking.com stepped in and refunded us part of the stay so we could book another hotel with more flexible hours for 1 night.
The apartment (Madam Butterfy) was supposed to accommodate 4 people but it only managed 3 at a stretch. We wanted a large apartment, and it appeared to be the smallest. One of the 2 electric hobs did not work. When we complained to the lady about this, she told us that this was the same for everyone, and that we could use the microwave. She did not mention this when we checked in, otherwise we could have planned a bit better with shopping. There were mosquitos everywhere in the apartment, no doubt made worse by the fact that the heating seemed to be turned up quite high. We complained about this, and were told the heating is controlled remotely, and is set to 21 degrees, 'quite normal'. This was too hot for us, even with the windows wide open (letting more mosquitos in). There was only 1 pillow each and 1 towel each. Every time we asked for something she seemed very annoyed and dismissive. Also, she was sat right by the front door, meaning that you had to squeeze past her every time you wanted to leave the building. Either way it felt like an imposition. Not good customer service. We weren't the only ones with problems as another family were left stranded at reception after she had disappeared at a crucial time. Strange things kept happening in the apartment, such as the shower spurting out water suddenly, or the kettle turning on for no reason.
The apartment was in a good location, not too far from the Duomo and the River, and right next to a really cheap market that sold lots of lovely fresh fruit and vegetables. There was decent lighting in the kitchen area and the mattress was really comfortable. The shower was the right temperature. The decor was quite nice, especially the wrought iron spiral staircase. There was also a cushion on the underside of the staircase to stop you bashing your head, which was quite considerate.
