Basiliani Hotel    

Wonderful hotel: great location, superb hotel rooms with design look, customer focused hotel staff. Just perfect.

This hotel was like staying in another world from centuries past. It was amazing each room situated in what seemed was stone cliffsides. The view from both windows looked out on the ancient city. All sites were within walking distance. The manager spoke English and gave many ideas with walking map to find them. You don't have to be interested in Italian history to thoroughly enjoy this hotel. Breakfast was wonderful with all fresh made local breads and fruits, cheese. The room was simple but well designed to stay true to the cities age and structure. Loved it.

We enjoyed this totally unique hotel with modern rooms and ancient caves. Excellent view from superior rooms. Very good breakfast. Helpful staff especially Guiseppe who helped us in many ways.

This was our favorite hotel in our favorite city this trip. The staff was perfect....friendly and knowledgable. The room was just delightful.....so modern in such an ancient setting.

We liked the spaciousness of the room and the bathroom,the minimum of furniture, yet very comfortable. The surroundings were great and the breakfast was very good.

The hotel is located in a wonderful setting and it is a real design hotel inside starting from elegant interior and furniture in the rooms and ending with the owner's dog's Marimeko bed :-) Staff is just incredible - kind and caring, attentive and helpful yet unobtrusive. Giovanni carried our heavy luggage and treated us like ladies. Paola was so kind to find us another hotel in the town and recommended places to see. Hotel was kind to send us detailed directions how to find hotel with pictures and that was helpful. Breakfast was wonderful and very tasty. This was the first time during our trip that we got fruits for breakfast. Everyone speaks wonderful English and you can really feel that staff is their for their guests and not the other way round as it often happens.

You really need Giovanni to take your luggage to the room as the mentioned 200 m are cobblestone paved staircase. The booking confirmation stated that our room is having a terrace which was not the case. But what we did not like most of all is that the hotel was fully booked and we could not stay another night :-)

Scenery, breakfast, view, environment

Our room was stifling hot even with the heat turned OFF; that foom needs some ventilation.

This is an awesome hotel, right on the edge of the valley where all the caves area. It's possible to stay further in the "town" but we liked being as far into the caves without actually camping.

A little hard to find, but that was our fault. The caves are hard to see from the town. You have to drive down some very narrow, steep streets to get there. Call if you get lost - that will save time.

We were at this hotel just one day, but the town and hotel left to us very good impression. The people were very friendly and helpful, hotels room was comfortable and lovely, also we had warm and delicious breakfast. Although we were here very short time, we want to come back.

An interesting room, staff were nice and helpful, and breakfast was a good range of choices.

It's location! In front is the beautiful valley and on the paths left, right, and behind it are the rest of the amazing Sassi dwellings of "old" Matera. We parked for free and overnight in the nearby Piazza San Pietro and walked about 6 minutes to the Basiliani. The staff were wonderful and were prepared to go get our luggage had we not carried it with us. Our room was very comfortable and we did not experience problems from dampness in the air or on the furniture as some people had commented about a different cave hotel in Matera. The breakfast was just right for us and the next day's staff were just as friendly and accomodating as the first staff members we had met the night before. We loved our stay there and will stay there again if we get to return to Matera some day.

I absolutely loved this hotel. The view from our bedroom window was breathtaking. The owners, Giuseppe and Gabriella, are amazing hosts. Sassi di Matera, one of my favorite places ever!!!

This hotel is hard to find, but worth it! It is such a unique experience and the staff makes you feel very comfortable. After I found the hotel they drove me to my car to pick up my luggage and then they drove me back when it was time for me to depart.

We liked virtually everything about the Hotel and its staff. The design of the space is amazing--beautiful rooms built into the rock caves! The location, within the Sassi Heritage Area, is unparalleled. The staff was very friendly and helpful, and took a special interest in assisting me in finding my ancestors who were from the area. Top notch hotel. Even the dog, Luna, who sleeps behind the reception desk, is perfectly coordinated to the design scheme!

The staff & owner were so nice & helpful. Our room/villa/cave. was located on the cliff over looking the gourge, the room was modern & very spacious, bathroom good. Very quiet location. The breakfast was very nice. Handy location to many local attractions ie. two raperian churches & the old town, good restaurants just around the corner from the square. This place is so unique. You must stay here !!!!!

Most amazing view from the Hotel in one of the best kept secrets of the country (Matera; wow) Beautifull rooms and a perfect friendly staff. For sure the very best place to stay in South of Italy!

the location the the hotel was great. amazing view of the Sassi from my room. the staff was very helpful with everything, and very nice and welcoming. helped me to get information about trasportation to and from Matera, gave great info about what to see in town and picked me up from the train/bus station. I really enjoyed my stay in the hotel and in the beautiful Matera!

Room was extremely simple and not well decorated.

One of the best places we stayed in the areas of Puglia/Basilicata. The location is simply out of the world, set in the caves, overlooking the gorge and the old city. The staff there are so informative, so helpful. The rooms are huge, clean & modern. The breakfast are great too. Apart from Matera being so special, one is tempted to go back there again, just to have the pleasure to stay in Basiliani Hotel again. Everyone was so helpful. They gave us everything to do while in Matera. The breakfast was very good and the coffee fantastic. The vista from the hotel is fantastic. A night it was so beautiful!

you cannot drive to the hotel directly. It is just off the piazza. they do have people that will help you carry your luggage.
