First, the staff is top notch, Simone at the front desk and Laura in the restaurant were fantastic. They both struck a balance between professionalism and friendliness that is rarely encoutered. The location could not be better. You are out of the craziness of the main island, yet only 5 minutes away from it by the hotel water shuttle. Everything about the hotel is beautiful and reflects attention to detail. The spa experience was wonderful. The restaurant is cleverly done - a moderate selection of dishes that are fresh, well-prepared and well thought out. The garden is lovely and just the spot to rest up after a day swimming through the crowds on the main island. We were upgraded to a full suite with a balcony overlooking the lagoon and St. Mark'S. If not for this, I suspect we would have spent more time on the main island, but we were so comfortable and the view was so amazing, we didn't see much need to leave the balcony. Okay, if I have to nitpick on something...the front of the restaurant seemed a bit understaffed, particularly if the dining room was at or near capacity and, consequently, the pace of the meals was slow. This was not a problem for us, but if someone wanted to rush through a meal for some reason, it might be a problem for them. The wine list could be a bit broader and a one or two line description of the wines offered would be very helpful to those of us not familiar with particular varietals or how the varietals we are familiar with were handled by the wine maker.

The location was exactly what I was looking for: easy access to the main tourist sites (namely San Marco), but away from the crowds that are to be found there. The garden is nice. The EUR 20 fee for internet/wifi is nonsense, and should be built into the room fee. (Note: despite the claim on the booking.com website, as of 5 April 2011 there is indeed a charge for wifi - it is EUR 20 per device for the duration of the stay.)

“San Clemente is an oasis of tranquillity within of the bustle of Venice. We thoroughly enjoyed the 5 star comfort in the beautiful and quiet historic surroundings. Despite being on an island, it was convenient to reach all the tourist attractions as the hotel provides a comfortable water shuttle service to San Marco that runs every 20 mins and is no more than a 15 minute trip. Helpful and friendly staff. Fantastic breakfast. We would definitely stay there again.” Fay, Newlands, Cape Town |

“This is a fantastic, palace residence from the 18th century. The service is definitely 5 Star, the staff could not have been more helpful, courteous or attentive. The room was definitely a palace, large, junior suite with a high ceiling, fresco on the sealing, silk wall coverings, ornate furnishings, large sitting area foyer and large marble bathroom. The property is on the water at the start of the Venetian Grand Cannel!! We would stay again.” Mark, Tuson |
