Area information
The Sassi in Matera is a vast historical district consisting of an ensemble of very old buildings and excavated caves, built out of the area's characteristic tufa limestone.
Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993, the Sassi has been extensively restored into modern dwellings. Guests can make visits to the Ridola National Archaeological Museum and the new Museum of Modern Art.
Matera is a half-hour drive from the sandy beaches of the Ionian Coast. Visitors can enjoy mountaineering excursions in the Parco Nazionale del Pollino.
Travel information
Piazza San Pietro Caveoso is accessible by car and you do not need a special permit to enter here.
You will find the hotel’s reception just a few metres from the square.

The closest stations are Ferrandina Scalo (35 km) and Bari (66 km ). From both, it is possible to reach Matera by bus with FAL (Ferrovia Appulo Lucane).
By Car:
From the Bologna-Taranto Motorway:
- Exit at Bari Nord, and head towards Altamura-Matera (SS 99).
From the Salerno-Reggio Calabria motorway:
- Exit at Sicignano degli Alburni, towards Potenza.
- Follow directions to Metaponto (SS 407 Basentana) until you reach Matera.
- From the SS 106 towards Metaponto, follow the signs to Matera.
By Plane:
- The closest airport is Bari-Palese (60 km).
