As noted, I did not like the room that I booked. The manager said they never ever had a problem with any kind of odour in the room, then went on to say she notice a water stain in the ceiling. There clearly was an issue with something, possibly the water pipes from an adjoining apartment. The room was dark, and the auto lights in the hallways were not reliable. As well, I did not like that the room was completely separate from the breakfast room. Lastly, I didn't completely mind that there was not life, though I did not enjoy having to carry my luggage up the steps.
This turned out to be a nice little place to stay. It's location, in a little piazza, just off one of the main streets, Via Calzaiuoli, makes it a handy spot for all the sites. The breakfast was the usual fare, and the large fridge in the breakfast room was available for use. The manager was pleasant and fortunately heeded my request for a room change, as the room I booked was an interior room - the Blue Room - on the 1st floor. While it had access to a kitchenette used by another guest, the actual breakfast room was on the 2nd floor where the office and other guest rooms were located. The Blue Room also has a private external bathroom, which was quite clean. The room itself was a good size, but it was dark and dank; the window looked into a narrow dark courtyard. There was a terrible odour present - something between spoiled food and sewer water - which I advised the manager after the 1st night. The cleaner attended to freshen up the room, but the odour remained. I advised the manager after the 2nd night of my 4-night stay, and after checking with the owner, offered me the only available room. I could not have stayed where I was! The 2nd room - I cannot remember the name - was spacious and modern. There was some street noise which may be a problem during high season, but in this situation, I will take noise over smell! Overall, this was a place that does give you a taste of living like a local - there's a very popular panino stand nearby, a small grocery market, a good bakery...all the stuff!
