Crotto Di Gittana  

Croto di Gittana is a very pleasant and cosy spot, offering a breathtaking view over the Como lake. Located very close to Varenna city (about 10 minutes by car), is appropriate for those people who want to be in the "heart" of Como lake, means the most beautiful cities in the centre of the lake: Varenna, Bellagio, Menagio, Tremezzo aso. The rooms was very large and comfortable, furnished in solid wood and obviously, overlooking the Como lake. The mini bar and fruits were offered for free for the guests (which is very nice...). Regarding the food...it was excellent, beyond our expectations. We eat at the restaurant hotel almost every night because we wanted to try all the dishes in the menu:): local fish (fish pate, lake fish), pasta, salami, local cheeses, sweets aso. A good selection of the Italian wines and Mauro, as a perfect and welcoming host, offered us every night some specialties such us: grappa, limoncello or prosecco for dessert. We took the breakfast on the terrace with lake view and dinner, depending on the weather: inside or at the outside terrace. Briefly, a great location and one of the most beautiful panorama in the world! I highly recommend Crotto di Gittana for anyone travelling to Lake Como area.

We are so glad that we chose to stay at Crotto Di Gitana. Simply put, the service, the rooms, the views - were all fabulous. I highly recommend staying here - they only offer three rooms and are only open 6 months of the year (summer). So you are getting a very private boutique service. The people there are very sweet - the food (risotto) and wine are great too. Its great value for money and the breathtaking view is the cherry on top!

Terrific waiter...he could work at the best Italian restaurants in the U.S. The Best view we have ever seen from Room/outdoor dining area, and we have stayed at many 5 star hotels in resort areas.

Should put a light and or hand rails on steep steps going from parking lot to restaurant......actually fell on my check out early A.M. due to lack of ability to see good enough.

Wonderful location with amazing view over Lake Como. Large clean bright room. Quiet locaton. Very friendly staff, great welcome, and fresh fruit and bottled water in the room every day. There are only three rooms, above a restaurant, so it doesn't function as a full hotel, which was fine for us. The taxi fare is 10 euro to or from Varenna village, but with a bit of effort you can walk into Varenna in the cool at the start of the day in about 45mins. Varenna is a beautiful old village on the lakeside, away for any traffic, with ferries across the lake to various other small towns.

No dislikes, provided you accept it's about 4km, and up a hill from Varrena, but that's the wonderful thing about it, with its great location and view

Beautiful location with stunning view of the lake and just great breakfast. Close to Varenna either short taxi or energetic walk, recommend taxi to get back unless you are a keen hill walker. The girl at the Varenna ferry was a real sweetheart calling a taxi for us. The countryside is fantastic well worth doing a stint along the famous sentiero del viandante. All in all a brilliant place to stay and relax for a few days.

We loved the view of Lake Como and the sense of peace and relaxation that we experienced. There are only 3 guest rooms and so it is very quiet and private. We arrived earlier than the 5:00 P.M. check in and we were able to enjoy an afternoon of drinking wine along with the fruit, crackers and cookies that were provided all the while looking over the spectacular view. Mauro, was wonderful. He made sure that we were taken care of during the dinner, which was wonderful. His sense of humour and tasteful interaction with us was a highlight. We walked the 3 kms into town which was beautiful but I would recommend having a car if you choose to stay here.

The rooms were beautiful, but they elected not to outfit them with air conditioning. I think this was a mistake as it left it a little uncomfortable for sleeping as it was very hot during our stay.

Crotto Di Gittana is a special place. It is situated on a hillside overlooking Lake Como with fabulous views and amazing serenity. We couldn't have asked for a better place. We read from previous visitors that it was difficult to access with a rather treacherous winding road going up the hillside. We agree with that statement but once you arrive, it was worth it. We also learned that there are two routes to the hotel, with the second route being longer but with wider turns and less steep inclines/declines. We highly recommend the alternate route from the train station. You may wish to call ahead and see if they can send you this better route. Once you arrive, you will truly appreciate the beauty of the location, the wonderful service you will receive, and the lovely rooms they provide.

The fantastic views and the welcoming and friendly staff. The generally peaceful surroundings. Reasonably well-positioned for visits to a number of interesting sites, such as Varenna, nice walks, or trips into the mountains

We were there during a very hot spell and the lack of air-conditioning made things uncomfortable - too hot to sleep at nights - definitely a necessity. The evening meal was good, but expensive for what it was. In general, the hotel was a little expensive for the facilities offered (E.G. no swimming pool).

Rooms where bland, breakfast consisted of a few cold cuts and cheese...

My husband and I were celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary and Crotto Di Gittana was the perfect place for us to relax and enjoy the beautiful Lake Como area. The view was amazing from our room and Mauro could not have been more gracious. He told us about the area and made us feel very welcome!! We were only there for one night and we wished we could have stayed longer.We also ate at the restaurant there. The fish was excellant!! We will always have fond memories of Crotto Di Gittana.

Staff were attentive ,liked it so much we stayed longer than expected. View over lake was spectacular.

Crotto di Gittana is a restaurant with 3 or 4 rooms which are large and very clean with ditto bathrooms. The breakfast was more than sufficient and the service very friendly, efficient and professional.The restaurant serves meals which are well prepared and offers many local specialties and good wines. This is a no frills place but wonderful because of its lack of pretention and quietude.The rooms, restaurant and terraces have spectacular views of Lake Como as the Crotto lies several hairpin turns above the lake, ideally located above Varenna. One can use the hotel as a base for many walks in the hills and villages. Definitely a place to go back to. Thanks to Mauro for his hospitality and information!
