Once Italy’s 2nd largest city-state, elegant Lucca remains an important town on any itinerary in beautiful Tuscany. Its instantly recognizable historic center is completely surrounded by Renaissance-era walls which offer a leisurely "passeggiata."
Tree-lined bastions overlook the surrounding modern town, but their low height means that the best photo opportunities of medieval Lucca are from Torre Guinigi. This tower topped with trees overlooks the rooftops below and lush mountains beyond.
The bell tower of San Frediano is even taller and stands back from the elaborate gold mosaic adorning the church’s façade. Equally interesting is Lucca Cathedral’s façade, where every column is unique. The church of San Michele in Foro is on the site of the Roman forum, and the Domus Romana excavations are of a house from a similar era.
Roman amphitheater remains also form foundation stones of the medieval houses, cafés and shops of oval-shaped Piazza Anfiteatro. More sidewalk restaurants line Piazza Napoleone, Lucca’s largest square, around the corner from San Giovanni church, home to a festival celebrating Puccini, the town’s most famous son. Unsurprisingly, music is a big thing here, and summer and winter festivals showcase genres other than just opera.
Booking.com’s range of Lucca accommodations includes apartments, B&Bs and 5-star hotels. Properties are available near the train station, and some include swimming pools and parking.

The walled city had too much to see for the length of our stay. We would like to return. We only had breakfast at hotel, and it was ample. Dinners we had in old, traditional local restaurants near the hotel, and the food was excellent. Lucca is a walled city and not open to general traffic.... it is a pedestrian city. I don't think we would avoid anything, but would make more time for a Lucca visit.

Piazza San Michelle square in our opinion is the best square...
Piazza San Michelle square in our opinion is the best square in Lucca with wonderful cafes to soak in the sun, serving local sweet and savoury food. The square is home to the Taddeucci family bakery who are famous for their Bucellato. Forno a Vapore Amedeo Giusti is also wonderful bakery. Restaurants which we loved included Da Ciacco and the wine bar Enoteca Vanni. Lucca has everything to offer for a four / five day stay (we didn’t get bored that’s for sure!), with lots of museums and beautiful architecture. The Guinigi tower is well worth a climb for beautiful city views and the city walls are a lovely walk especially at sunset, with Mountain views in the distance! There are also lots of wonderful shops in the city and the people of Lucca are very friendly.

Beautiful architecture within the impressive defensive wall...
Beautiful architecture within the impressive defensive wall structure. It was compact enough within the historic centre for one to acquire a familiarity with all aspects of the city within our 8 day stay. All restaurants and cafes that we ate at provided excellent food: there were no disappointments.
Furthermore, Lucca has great public transport links with other areas of Tuscany: day trips were had to Viareggio, Pistoia, and Firenze.

We loved Lucca.
We loved Lucca. Great restaurants, great shopping, fabulous food and little grocery stores so you can cook at home too. Loved walks on the wall and strolling down streets window shopping with an espresso. Going back in 2025 for 3 weeks!

Lucca is the friendly city we visited in Tuscany.
Lucca is the friendly city we visited in Tuscany. It's full of people going about there daily lives as opposed to tourists. Our day trips to small towns in the vicinity were excellent. Osteria de Pasqualino is not to be missed.
The hotel is outside of gothic center, but it gives you a lot of more. So close to all amenities. The hotel is not so big but very comfortable with the size, great pool and amazing staff - Thank you Fabio!!! A lot of good advises. We parked the car in front of the hotel, no charge. Lucca is the great destination for people who are looking quite spot but close enough to the beach and slo great walking old town experience. Bikers - don’t forget to visit small towns at the hills.
We stayed here for 2 night (booked for one but we’re so happy booked for a 2nd) whilst exploring Lucca during a 3 week trip to Northern/middle Italy - so close to the city walls that it is a 5 min walk. Beds were the most comfortable and this hotel feels so much more like a 4 star than 3; staff are excellent and so accommodating and it feels very very friendly
Large variety of sweet and salty choices for the breakfast. Coffee as it has to be in Italy, full flavour and hot.
Location only 5 min from old town wall and all the sights of the city.
Friendly host Luca was able to give us great recommendations for restaurants.
Lucca town excellent place to find the core of Tuscan excellent food tradition
The small hotel is like a Villa in one of 'the secret gardens of Lucca' in the close hills south of town. You will find a wonderful new swimming pool in this garden. Breakfast is excellent and staff extremely frindly. Mattress perfect, firm but comfortable, in no way saggy. By car you can reach the old town of Lucca in a few minutes.
This hotel was the best hotel we have ever stayed at in Italy.
Everything was awesome, cozy, quiet and cleen room, friendly staff and comfortable beds.
There was a wide range of food options for the breakfast.
We felt in love with Lucca and this place, so we even extended our stay!
This boutique hotel is very charming and is located in the heart of Lucca. Everything is at walking distance.
Beautiful property, very clean, spacious room, great common areas, wonderful staff, very good breakfast. Really nothing to complain about (just that we couldn’t stay longer!)
Manuela and Monica were excellent hosts. Breakfast was excellent, great location with parking on site. Villa was located close to the city wall with an entrance to the city. Really good bikes to rent at the villa which was a fun way to explore lucca.
Close to train station- it was pouring rain and so nice not to get soaked. Great location. Very clean. Breakfast choices were wonderful and the staff very friendly. Not too far from sites in Lucca. I highly recommend this hotel.
Great location, AC, the apartment was very well-planned. The kitchen is equipped decently well. The host was very helpful and accommodating. The best apartment we rented during our two week trip to Italy.
Recommended!
The property was well situated in the centre of Lucca with parking. It was slightly dated in parts but everywhere was clean and it perfectly suited my needs at a good price. The staff were all helpful and very nice.
Hotel Diana was a wonderful place to stay in Lucca. A great location near the train station, the quality of the room was amazing, the staff was friendly and helpful and located in the best location within the city.
Much more than just a bed to sleep on, this is a piece of Italy itself. The plates, each a unique piece of art. The ambiance authentic. The staff exceptional. The breakfast FAR exceeded expectations.
The Hotel is small, calm and has all features one would need. It is situated in an olive farm just 5 minutes outside of Lucca. The pool is stunning and the personal is friendly and super attentive.
Well located inside the walls of Lucca, the accommodation was clean, comfortable and had excellent facilities. The hosts were very helpful and friendly and breakfast was fabulous.
The room was beautiful. The bed was comfy, and the shower was surprisingly roomy for Italy. There was a giant refrigerator, odd but cool. It is smack in the middle of Lucca.
Very comfortable hotel for 2 nights, great location and best breakfast we had during our 3 weeks in Italy. Thanks to the staff for making our stay so great.
Staff very friendly and extremely helpful in every way. Lovely and clean throughout and just 10-15 minutes walk from the centre of Lucca inside the walls.
