Des Etrangers Hotel & SPA  

The location is perfect overlooking the beautiful bay of Syracuse. The roof garden was a wonderful spot to view the whole of the coast line. Breakfast was pretty good too although the scrambled egg too a while to be replenished. I would recommend you asking for accommodation in the main body of the hotel however and if you want a view of the sea you need to stipulate from the front of the building not the side aspect where we were.

The hotel is very difficult to get to if you're arriving in the dark as we were. Even with a printed map and directions I still had to telephone the hotel to ask for directions and at 11pm this wasn't funnhy. Then when we finally drove up outside the hotel I popped in to ask if there was a car park or anywhere on nearby and was told no parking available and it was a to-away area outside the surrounding area. The nearest carpark was 15 minutes walk away and it was now pouring with rain, The porter took our bags into the hotel and we proceeded to try to find this carpark which was a long way away. We then of course had to find our way back with a map which wasn't very clear. Finally we got back to tho hotel to find out that the card key didn't appear to work, Down to reception we went only to find out that the key opened the door next to the number we had! By this time it's gone midnight of course. When using the bathroom (which was lovely) we discovered when you flushed the toilet it caused a monumental noise due to an air lock in the system. Could it get any worse I wonder. We fell into bed and found out when we awoke that the sea view was available if you stuck your head out the window and turned to the right. However with this knowledge I think anyone would like to stay there. As it was early in the season I don't think they were prepared for visitors - certainly not use. Be prepared that's all I would say!

Excellent staff and service with baggage, directions within the city, parking options, and amenities. The rooftop bar and restaurant provided a panoramic view of the city and the seaside surrounding it. We viewed, but did not use the spa facilities, but they looked very clean and inviting. Eating in the nearby Piazza Duomo for dinner was a truly great experience to mingle with the local people and enjoy the culture. Don't pass up this opportunity as a place to stay in Syracusa.

The staff were helpful but not exactly cheerful . The hotel had spa facilities including a pool - which was only open after 3.00 P.M. which seemed to be quite inconvenient. In addition I could not use the pool because you were not allowed in unless you wore a bathing cap. Felt that it was more of a "business venue" rather than a holiday stay and guests were inconvenienced as a result of a convention held during our stay. Very good location. It was a shame that there was no outside seating for guests and the lounge area was very impersonal

The water on the sink was yellow, the internet was expensive, the parking is far away and they dont provide a valet service.

We got a good price for this hotel, which otherwise is expensive; a good view from our room; hotel well designed and appealing; friendly and helpful staff; wifi worked in the room, and bbc and cnn were available on the tv

I was upgraded to a lovely junior suite - and given a parking pass to be able to park anywheev on the island. The roof-top restaurant was very nice (breakfast was just ok) - and I also enjoyed the indoor pool on the ground floor. The view was great, as was the location in the heart of the island.

It was rather noisy - since the wiondows face the one main road on the island - busy day and night. Also, the shower was terrible - for some reason they don't beieve in shower curtains. The shower head was fixed at about five feet - and more water splashed on the floor than stayed in the tub. The maids had to mop up a lake each day I was there. And, I was surprised by a charge of $5 to use the computer/internet in the lobby for 10 minutes - and then over $20 for a connection each day from my room. Not quite a 5-star property.

Relaxed elegance and designed for comfort sums up the hotel. A wonderful ending to 7 - nights exploring Sicily on our honeymoon. Superb location for exploring the car restricted Ortigia and a wonderful retreat after a hectic day sightseeing in Siracusa or countryside towns like Noto. Addressed so many times before, the car park is not at the hotel and they do help you with arranging a taxi to lead you there and then bring you back. However, if you can accept the benefit of fewer, much fewer, cars on this historic island and you would pay for parking at any city centre hotel in the world, you will find this an easy adjustment to settling in at the hotel. If you embrace the walk back to the hotel from the car park as a way to stretch your legs and discover the island without a guidebook in hand, it will be one of the more peaceful 15-20 minutes you enjoy while touring Sicily. The extra dollars for the sea view room with balcony was without question one of the best choices I made. Yes, Saturday night meant dozens of couples and families gathered on promenade next to the Fonte Aretusa. The luxurious feel of opening those doors to the sea and distant mountains left me speechless every morning and sunset. Breakfast on the rooftop with 360 degree views left us with a desire to explore another part of the region every day of our stay.

The fact that I didn't find a way to extend our stay disappoints me. The narrow car-free car-few streets of this idyllic island encouraged unplanned exploration for which I simply did not leave enough time.

The location was excellent. The room was good with comfortable beds & a good sea view. The room cleaning was very good & unobtrusive. The price as discounted was very reasonable & constituted a good deal, which we were very happy with.

The breakfasts were very poor & not consistent with 5-star grade or even 4-star. The hotel is a little bit faded to be 5-star & should really be considered 4-star at most, even if the breakfasts improved.

Buffet breakfast not up to scratch.In particular hot food unsatisfactory - scrambled eggs invariably cold And overdone mixed in with a bit of underdone cold bacon .
