We cannot say enough nice about Fra I Sassi. We were lost trying to find it, but the gracious host, Domenico, came and found us to lead us to it. He arranged parking for our car, helped with our luggage -- all with a very wonderful smile. Staying in the Sassi was a unique and wonderful experience. The room was large, comfortable, immaculately clean, with good WiFi. The bathroom (once part of a cave) was enormous with wonderful twin sinks and a huge, easy to use shower. Breakfast was delicious and abundant. Domenico gave us great recommendations for restaurants and arranged a superb guide (Silvio) for an afternoon tour. Without doubt, this was our favorite place to stay during our month long time in Italy. A stay here is a must for any tourist in Matera.
There was absolutely nothing to dislike.
We really enjoyed staying here- it is easily accessible walking or you can park very close by. We were greeted by the owner who kindly offered us fresh coffee and showed us maps of matera. We stayed in a cave room which was really great- it wasn't at all damp which I have heard some cave rooms are and there was air conditioning. The room was big with a sofa and lots of space. There is a beautiful balcony Overlooking matera. Breakfast was really good with great coffee, juice, cereals, bread, fruit and local cakes. We would really reccommend staying here.
Our room was in 'a cave' and was very nicely decorated. The bathroom was small but had everything. Just outside of our room is a terrace with chairs and tables and a fantastic view. Christina gave us a map and some ideas of what to do. Breakfast was not just cake! It had local bread, cheeses, hams etc I was even able to try speaking a little Italian.
you can good views from your window.
a little expensive
Everything. The room was clean and comfortable, and the staff was kind and friendly. If I go back to Matera, I will stay there again.
Warm, welcoming, elegant. You really felt looked after. Breakfasts offered wide range of choices in elegant surroundings - a lovely beginning to each day
Loved our room - Room #1, the first room after entering the gate and coming up the stairs. It has a double bed with a white iron headboard, corner desk and a barrel vaulted stone ceiling - quite comfy! The bathroom is big, nicely renovated with double sinks, and steps up to a big, soaking tub/shower combination. Everything was very clean. This room does not open to the terrace but is just steps away. Well-located, right off one of the main streets and close to good restaurants. And easy to find after wandering around Matera. Breakfast was also good with plenty of variety. And the owners, Cristina and her father, were more than helpful and friendly. The airline lost one of our bags. Once it was found, Cristina was able to get it to Matera much faster than if we had waited for the airline to deliver it. Many thanks to both of them for all their hard work!
Everything was great - Highly recommend!
It is a wonderful place to stay and perfect location to explore Sassi.
One of the BEST hotel rooms I've ever been in, for a bunch of reasons: * It's in a cave! cool! * Situated in a good location in a gorgeous town! * Immaculately clean. * The AC was so quiet we weren't even sure it was on. Just great! * The window looks over a lovely part of the town & has 2 layers of shutters. * The bed was comfy & big. * The bathroom was beautiful & very comfortable to use. The complementary soaps were better than our favorite brand at home. * The shower deserves a separate mention: it was the shower we dream of for ourselves- roomy, comfortable, easy to use & with a strong current. * Breakfast was generous & tasty.
* The owners know very little English. * The bathroom is separated from the rest of the room by a curtain. This gets pretty awkward when you have to do... bathroom things that tend to be noisy & smelly. * Parking might prove challenging around the hotel in the high season.
There are two Sassi districts in Matera, this is in the newer section but the older section is a 5-10 minute walk away.
The view, balcony, cave hotel were all spectacular! We even had a natural awning in front of our room so when it rained we could still sit outside and enjoy the view. Breakfast and staff were very good too.
the room was amazing - was it a discotheque, a wine cellar or a nativity performance site ? HUGE and very comfortable with a sofa I had no time to enjoy ! overall venue fantastic and nice breakfast room ..... even in the Sassi centre this B&B 5* cave complex proved difficult to find with even locals making mistakes (was there a street name up ?) > I like this mystery, infinitely preferable to predictability
the noise of the underfloor air regulation + air conditioning machines - but hey ! you can't have everything (engineering is impressive !) staff pleasant - but somewhat half-hearted: disappointing but I guess they get bored with their clientele
Location, room, terrace was beautiful and very comfortable. Highly recommended accommodation.
It was beautiful. I loved the fact that I had a large room, even though it had been cut in the rock. I felt like I was living with the Flinstones for a few days with all the modern cons. The breakfast, especially the 'tomato bread bake' was very tasty It's situated in a great location, just off Via Fiorentini, which is easy to locate after a day in the maze.
Beautiful and clean rooms with an amazing view! We stayed in suite 5 , which was like a 2 bed flat. It was very impressive and so clean. The staff were very kind and courteous and you could tell they took great pride in their hotel. It was an easy walk to all sites and the breakfast was perfect.
The owner who was very nice and helpful. And the incredible view !!!!
The room on top that we got, was small, and although the incredible view, it was very uncomfortable, as it only had one chair to sit on, and that was very uncomfortable, and the bed didn't have any headrest, so you couldn't sit in the bed.
Beautiful residence with great views of Matera, especially at night. Close to many restaurants and perfectly located to visit the city. The lady at the front desk was very pleasant and helpful, and we managed to communicate even though she did not speak English. Great cappuccino for breakfast
If you have a car, you have to park it up in the new town, which can be a bit tricky. A gps or good map comes in handy.
I have just left Fra I Sassi Residence where I stayed for 3 nights. The most useful and welcome reviews are those that provide the whole unvarnished truth. The accommodation exceeded my hopes. This is what you can expect: Accommodation - truly the cleanest rooms I have ever experienced. I stayed in an air conditioned one bedroom (studio setup) with a beautifully fitted bathroom, tastefully furnished bedroom and a comfortable queen sized bed. Breakfast is a selection of savoury and sweet - including cheese, prosciutto, fresh Matera bread (highly regarded in Italy and not to be missed for its unique texture and flavour). There's yoghurt and flan, jam and cornetto, fruit and excellent quality coffee. The hosts are a delight and most welcoming. Very little English - but a lot of Italian, which makes sense since I'm visiting Italy and it's my responsibility to learn a bit of the local lingo. Nevertheless translation software and a lot of laughter makes for enjoyable moments ( try bleating if you're looking to taste a local lamb dish). View of Sassi: views are something that hotels and B&Bs rarely mention, maybe they think it self evident. I can confirm that my room looked directly at the skyline of the surrounding Sasso Barisano and I could enjoy the play of shadows on the buildings at nightfall, admire the glow of the stone against the midnight sky and marvel at the sheer ingenuity of humankind. Access and surrounds: I was worried about dragging my suitcase to places not accessible by car but found that my taxi could stop directly at the Fra I Sassi with only a dozen or so steps to navigate. Within a 2-5 minute walk there are excellent restaurants that are highly rated on Trip Advisor. ... the rest is your adventure.
This B&B deserve 5 stars. It's amazing dog friendly place. Fantastic location, fantastic view of the Sassi, chic design bathroom, large bed, adorable lamps/bells, delicious breakfast, good wi fi signal in the room, very clean. Highly recommended
Amazing place within the "Sassi". Nice terrace for breakfast. Great bathroom with huge bath tub!
Very nice people and room.
Fanastic location and excellent hosts. Excellent Room , bathroom a bit small but otherwise large and comfortable. Great balcony looking over the town.
Parking could be an issue in the busy season.
