Location! Breakfast. It was nice that they offered to sort out any problems with us driving in the city.

The location was good. The staff were helpful.

Our room was very nice but an extractor fan for the restaurant next door was just by our window and the room smelt of fried food in the evening. The stair carpets were rather worn and this doesnt give a good first impression. The breakfast room was far too small.

Basic accomodation in a good situation in the old city of Lucca. Free wifi which worked everywhere and a fantastic restaurant just next door.

Awful rude staff. Our "superior" room had a dirty bathroom and we looked at 4 rooms before settling on one which was acceptable. We did this on our own, the staff would not assist. We cut short our booked syat of 5 nights to just 3. Breakfast was poor.

I think that accommodation is an important part of any travel. From my point of view this beautiful hotel harmonizes with gorgeous Lucca and helps you to feel the city. It is indisputably good value for money.

Situated overlooking 2 huge piazzas, although the hotel appeared a little tired in places it has many original characteristics still intact. A decent variety of food at the buffet breakfast. The gentleman on the reception very helpful - we were staying just for 1 night - a Tuesday & most restaurants being closed on that day in Lucca at that time of year, he was able to give us clear directions for finding decent eateries which were open on a Tuesday. We chose to eat at Trattoria da Leo, although basic, good food & house wine at a good price.

Breakfast juice very diluted and water provided for making your own hot beverage not overly hot - a decent coffee making machine wouldn't go amiss. The lady on reception the morning we checked out was unfriendly. We left our luggage in reception whilst we had a last wander round and upon return walked in, picked up our luggage, walked out without her even glancing up - hardly secure.

Lovely entrance & common areas, spacious entrance halls, comfortable, new bathrooms, cleanliness, name of hotel well-displayed, gentleman receptionist was the best.

Location was measured as the crow flies, further off from station, not as on website, but still central; breakfast could be improved; tea & coffee making changed last day, & could not find the milk they usually put in a jug; were given a room without curtains(had shutters) but opposite other flats, room was changed, floors creaked during night due to heat pumps(?) or plumbing; checking out, were asked to pay city- tax but told there was no receipt,when we insisted, receptionist just gave us a paper with 2 lines, not official receipt-makes you wonder- other hotels did not ask for city tax; impersonal, bread not fresh- seems typical in Italy now?.

Staff were attentive to our needs, location was very good.

Bathroom had unpleasant smell drainage? Noise from street level was not kept out with window shutters that could not be fully closed.

The Staff are so helpful and speak excellent English. The hotel is charming and full of character.Much appreciated the bath as well as the shower! Breakfast very good.

The use of an iron would be helpful.

Very old hotel which would have been very stylish in its day. Room was comfortable and clean. Staff were very friendly and helpful and could speak English so we had no problems with communication as we could not speak Italian. Location was perfect for exploring the old town.

We liked the location - right in the old city centre of Lucca. Breakfast was the best of our whole holiday. Rooms were large and beautifully furnished.

The plumbing seemed to give off a "drainy" smell in the bathroom. Not serious.

Very easy to locate from the station. Easy to navigate the city from it. Decor quite charming

Smell/odour from/in En-suite Bathroom - rather unpleasant. we have found that this is not uncommon in older Italian hotels. Also, we stayed in Lucca just before a large comic and games festival/convention.Loads of huge marquees dominated the town incl the main squares etc..

Location was good. Room was spacious and clean but the bathroom was not maintained well. There was a lift.

The bathroom was not in good condition. There was mould on the walls and the bathroom in general needed a makeover.

The location of the Hotel Universo is very nice. The reception is also beautiful.

The room we received was extremely small and the not so good. The floor made of wood was damaged and was very difficult to close the bathroom door. I would recommend this Hotel, but with caveats.

Classic charm, friendly staff & a great location, all for a very reasonable price.

Good location! Very beautiful decoration! Lucca is very silent in the night which makes you have a good dream.

The raw ham at breakfast is with a little fish smelt. I forgot a electricity adapter plug in the room, but the room cleaner advised they haven't seem there is such item in the room.

The excellent location and the free WiFi throughout the hotel. Helpful and friendly reception staff.

Rooms were tired and bathroom had mould on the walls. Corridor walls had water damage and worn carpets. The breakfast room was cramped and the breakfast disappointing. Orange juice very diluted and a very small choice of breads, rolls, ham and cheese. The one person in charge of the breakfast room was unable to cope with clearing tables and replenishing the buffet by herself.
