Great unusual experience.
Breakfast stools/tables were uncomfortable, but take nothing aways from this facility. Excellent!
This hotel is in a great location right in the sassi. It's convenient for touring Matera as well as to restaurants in both the upper and lower town. It is in an old church so offers a unique atmospher with an old world feel while offering all modern conveniences including best WiFi we had in all of Italy. Breakfasts offered a wide variety of delicious and unusual selections.
Allow yourself some extra time to find this place. While we loved the location it was a challange to find. Unless you are under 30 or extremely athletic, avoid room #8. It was advertised as 'bi-level'. We did not realize this meant ladder-like stairs from entry/bathroom level to bed level, with little room for luggage. All other rooms we saw looked beautiful.
The hotel itself is beautiful and in the most amazing location and the staff wonderful - I would highly recommend this very special hotel.
Cleanliness and superb location with one of the best views overlooking the heart of Matera old city center! Staff always at disposal and very friendly. Super continental and international breakfast!
The staff were great. Very helpful with ideas and what to see in your time frame. Made reservation bookings for you. It's a boutique hotel where rooms are all very different and unique. You need to be aware of this before you book particularly if you don't like steps. Also is staying in Sassy /cave hotels there are lots of steps and cobble stones so do your homework. And get directions. I loved Matera and highly recommend a stay and in particular this hotel.
The location is perfect - in the heart of Sassi - easy walks to all parts of the city, but in a quiet enough area as to not be disturbed. The rooms were remarkable - a novelty of climbing a ladder to access your sleeping quarters. The breakfast was pizza and pastries - what could be better?
It is difficult to get to. Parking can be challenging - we parked in a garage several blocks away - cost 17 euro overnight. Also, beware using a gps trying to find the hotel - you may end up in some awkward positions at the end of squares. None of these are detractors enough from a return visit for us.
This small Boutique Hotel is very unusual as it is in a former church which is beautifully and with a lot of taste designed into s small hotel. the rooms tell that it was a church before, raw stone and the room filled with modern minimalized design interior. Very special and nice boutique hotel, good rates, good breakfast, terrific situation
But....the maintance of the place needs to be improved. In my room 2 lamps didn´t work, one was even broken. The outer laminate door was not able to close as there was a bent sheet metal. I had to discussion for 3 minutes with the receptionist why i need to close this door. it was fixed hours later in the afternoon. the staff tries to be friendly but every request or complain seems to disturb. There must be an increase of the service skills. The Hotel is but a bit hard to find and no acess by car or taxi, so you have to carry luggage quite some steps. WiFi was not stable
Excellent design for a cave hotel Superb staffs with excellent services, very open minded and friendly. They provided a lot of useful information for walking tour at Matera. Good wifi connection Good enough options for breakfast
Charming hotel in the old caves of Matera. This modern and beautifully decorated hotel is fantastic. Our room had 2 levels, entrance and beautiful big bathroom downstairs and bedrooms upstairs. Very clean and comfortable. Good location in the heart of Matera and breakfast was also very good. The manager was very nice and helpful. We got very lost driving to the hotel and when we called the hotel he sent someone to meet us and bring us there. The staff from the garage which the hotel arranged for our car were also very nice and helpful. Highly recommend this hotel in wonderful Matera.
A little more bench space would have been nice, but that's all.
Our third stay in this fantastic hotel. It was topped by staying in their latest suite - just amazing design with such style. On three levels from ground floor upwards. Ground floor has lounge area and large separate waterfall shower and huge stone bath, bidet, toilet etc area. First floor with large comfortable bed and tv etc and second floor with beautiful lounger, desk and window looking out towards the Sassi caves. We have stayed in two different rooms before and they were to be equally recommended, whatever your budget. Friends and family have stayed here too and were very complimentary. The breakfasts were good as was our welcome from Roberto and his staff. I always recommend this hotel to anyone who wishes to stay in the Sassi area as the location is central and the atmosphere of the caves is perfectly captured by this hotel. It is not to be missed. There are plenty of funky places to eat and drink and explore - even the town up top- just make sure you have comfortable shoes as there are plenty of cobbles and steps. Room Tip: Phone Roberto for advice Each room and suite is totally different.
leaving! slightly difficult to find garage for parking car but this is usual for large Italian cities and when we contacted the hotel they swiftly sent help who were extremely polite and guided us though.
A memorable experience.
the owner whose name is Roberto is a great Chi who has built one of the most incredible hotels I've ever stayed in.I would definitely recommend it and go back myself.
All the rooms are different and unusual. Carved out of rock with vaulted ceilings. We had ladders up to our bed and a large walk in shower in the bathroom. Amazing location and very friendly staff who organised a taxi for us on a Sunday.
Could do with a shelf in the bathroom and maybe a full length mirror.
Loved the location in the heart of the old town. Beautiful tranquil building, and a quite exquisite experience. This place is not quite like anywhere else I have visited and it really felt like stepping back in time. Hotel is comfortable and supremely tranquil, yet still has wifi and facilities on a par with much more modern places, a wonderful experience.
Nothing really. You need to be adventurous for our two storey room with hatch and loft-style ladder to the bedroom, but to be fair we were offered choice of another room and decided to stay put.
Beautifully furnished, friendly staff, excellent breakfast. Excellent bathroom facilities.
If you drive a car, plan ahead and coordinate your parking so that your walk into the hotel is not too far. The room we chose had the lofts. You must be able to climb up and down the ladders to the lofts. The price should be much lower for the inconvenience of the lofts and small room.
Great amosphere. Elegant rooms built in a cave church. Excellent breakfast in the fantastic hall area. The location is in the middle of the old cave town, close to everything. Very helpful and kind staff!
You cannot drive to the hotel but we got great help from hotel to find parking and carrying luggage.
Great location, staff, rooms, amenities, breakfast
I wouldn't recommend the small standard double room for mature couples.
The hotel is quirky, with some rooms being a bit tight. But the experience is fantastic. Staff are very helpful.
Friendly helpful staff, outstanding design of reception and room, location in the sassi, super comfortable bed, biggest shower of our three week tour of Italy, large breakfast, delicious cappuccinos.
Nothing. Everything was perfect
The owner and other staff were friendly, warm and very helpful with anything we asked of them. The owner obviously takes pride in his hotel and it shows. It was beautiful inside down to every detail and the experience of staying in the sassi was amazing. This was the best decision I made while traveling to Matera and would go back again in a second. Breakfast was amazing and there were tons of options. Excellent wifi. AC worked great. The location was perfect and has incredible views just steps from the front door.
The aesthetics--of both the lobby and the room. The bed was also very comfortable, the bathroom nice and spacious, and the location was good--a short walk, but definitely in the sassi.
The space for sitting or unpacking was very small, with room to lounge or work really only in the bed.
Excellent hospitality, high sense of security and personnel very pleasurable and polite
Absolutely wonderful. Wonderful experience!
Staff was extremely accomodating and efficient. The second room (1005) was really nice and spacious. The hotel while very hard to find is in a good location in the Sassi. The breakfast was also good.
The first night we were in room 1008 and I believe that is a DANGEROUS room --- you enter the bedroom up steep stairs through a trap door. We made sure the trap door was shut while sleeping. The other side of the bedroom is reached by steep curving stairs. Other than this room this is a wonderful hotel and I would recommend it to everyone.
