I can think of only two negatives about the place. We found the bed to be a bit hard and it was noisy at night. You are, after all, in a cave – effectively, an echo chamber – that is directly facing Piazza San Pietro Caveoso, which seems to be a main meeting point. There did seem to be some kind of noise ordinance at about midnight, though, because the loud conversations just came to a dead stop around that time all three nights we were there.
So many great things to say about this place that I hardly know where to start. The B&B directly, and I do mean DIRECTLY overlooks the Piazza San Pietro Caveoso which, in turn, overlooks the sassi of Matera. When you have a cup of coffee or glass of wine on your patio you will have one of the most amazing views you'll ever see. I think we are the only people in the world who didn't know that this is where they filmed "The Passion of the Christ." You do feel like you're overlooking ancient Jerusalem or Jericho when you look out into the ravine. Even from inside the room, you get this great view. The doors are double-doors, glass with an inner hinged part that you can lock for privacy or move aside for the view!
The decor in our room was so creative! I have never had a shower with a wall to wall mural before. Bathroom door was low though. Husband is six feet tall and bonked his head a couple of times.
The living room has this wonderful backlit sculpted scene of the sassi. The owners installed very focused lighting in different spots throughout the two rooms, and were all switched separately so you could select very architecturally interesting effects. I really enjoyed that.
There is a mini fridge with some items to purchase - and free bottles of water. There are dishes and pots if you want to prepare any food yourself. And there are a few bottles of wine available for purchase for something like 10 euros. So, if you want to settle on the patio with a nice red, you don't HAVE to go out and buy a bottle.
There is quite a lot to see within walking distance from the B&B – as long as you are in decent physical condition. This is not the place to visit if you have knee issues! We parked the car when we arrived and didn't use it again till we left three days later.
I'll add a few pointers that we would have liked to have known...
