great location within the sassi, and the experience of sleeping in acave-room family room nice and large , even with older children, a dressing room helped for privacy most staff helpfull, one front desk clerk in particular very nice breakfast extra charge for the use of the pool , we did not consider it worth 10 Euro each not to mention having to follow "Italian bathing cap rules" or the fact that no one under 18 is allowed although the stairs were not a problem for us , this hotel would not be suitable for anyone with mobility problems

Spectacular view and close to everything. All rooms were supposed to be non-smoking. Our room smelled smoke. We made this booking due to the indoor pool and we had missed that kids below 18 years do not have access. Good to know.

Excellent location right in the Sassi and near food/shops. The cave rooms were fun and unique to sleep in and that was the main reason we picked this hotel. The staff are friendly and informed. The breakfast was nice and served in a large cave room. 15 Euro and someone will come and get your car and park it inside a garage...worth every penny. Overall, one of the nicest places in my 6 months in Italy. We weren't able to find the hotel right away due to gps problems (It wanted me to go down a flight a stairs to get to the Sassi district)...it is in the lowest part of the Sassi and it is really tight to fit in a mid-sized car there. The Thermae cannot be used by anyone under 18 and that is a shame...there should be family hours for older children, but I understand that is less a swimming pool and more a spa.

In matera this is surely the best place to stay.. Extremely confortable (the room in the 2nd fllor, i think superior rooms) ,great view and the therme was simply awsome.. The swimming pool is a cave and its breathtaking beauty. The bathroom and rooms are big . It can be hot in summer for babies as i came to know from a friend but in early winner its beautiful . Breakast is standard italian but good. I am sure you will not regret if you choose this hotel .Good and helpful staff. Value for money.. Cave rooms can be bit stuffy for infant but still its an unique experience.

Location is lovely as is readaptation of building. Staff was warm and multi-lingual. Not a complaint but those with mobility issues should be cautious. There are many, many steps even with elevator. Rooms run up the side of a hill. I had a minor foot injury and managed all of the steps but anything more would have been a barrier. Entire area of city is relatively vertical and would not necessarily be so wonderful for very aged or anyone on crutches..

A beautiful location in the Sassi. The spa is quite different and worth using, albeit I would rather the cost was in the room rate rather than a usage charge, which was not cheap. Good breakfast and comfortable rooms. Easy access, once you work out the narrow streets and stairs- which is part of the fun. Use the hotel parking service. It is worth it !

The hotel rooms are very unique and beautifull, in the sassi. The hotel is located in the very heart of Matera's old town. It's Therma is fantasctic, very intimate indeed, and the most interesting of a kind I have ever been to. Breakfast was quite big and included almost everything, although I didn't particularly liked it.

What a great location! Close to sassi and the main new city square. The staff was great. Rooms were surprisingly comfortable. Breakfast was probably the one area that lacked for us (no simple things like cereal or toast!) Used the pool and sauna, it was worth it once. Nice break.

We enjoyed staying in a cavern environment which was a first for us. The location, the staff and the thermal facilities were very pleasing. We will recommend this place to family and friends. Because of its location in the Sassi it was difficult to find the hotel. Better indications on the website souls be helpful.

The location of this hotel in the historic Sassi District is unparalleled. Our room had its own small private terrace with table and 4 chairs directly next to our entry door, as well as a full-length view in front of our bed. The underground indoor spa and pool also was amazing. For the price, this hotel is hard to beat. The room and attached bath were simple, but well furnished, and complete with all necessary items. We would return to Locanda San Martino without any hesitation. No complaints. However, be aware that because of the location on the hillside in the Sassi District, there tends to be more noise coming from neighbors, roads, etc.

The hotel was in a superb position, in a quiet area, but near to local restaurants, shops and for sight seeing. Their was plenty of choice for breakfast but if you did not want an early start, it was not replenished and therefore what food was left out was not fresh. It is a lovely hotel and different.

Following the reviews on Booking.com all hotels were good along our 12-day trip from Rome to Catania but this one was an outstanding experience! Faultless decor, wonderful view from the window, private balcony to sit outside in the evening, modern facilities still matching the coziness of the house, but most of all the wonderful spa! We had been noticed in advance that this was €10 extra per person so it was not a surprise to us and was well worth it. Do not hesitate to try it out once you are there! The breakfast was also decent by Italian standard. It was a bit on the expensive side.

The troglodytic setting was unusual and appealing. Breakfast was exceptionally good with savoury sandwiches and a selection of cakes from a local pastry shop. Hotel staff were all very helpful. The swimming pool in the caves beneath the reception looked amazing, but 10 Euros a go felt a bit expensive to charge guests of the hotel.

Very clean hotel, friendly staff, large room, original. To reach it, we put in the address in our gps, but driving in the narrow streets, mostly one-way, our gps could not help us. Advice: follow your gps to Matera, and from the moment you notice the signs to the hotel: just follow them, the'll bring you in front of the hotel. You can park there for 10 or more minutes, we advice you to accept the offer of the hotel: they drive your car to a private parking nearby (10 euro/day + 5 euro if you do not drive your car yourself), only be in time the day you leave to avoid waiting when you are not the only one ... Very nice location in the middle of the old village!!
