This hotel was excellent in every sense. The hotel staff were great especially Ms. Sonia, the manager, who was friendly and generous and made our stay all the much better. The hotel with its rooms set in the caves is a unique experience in itself and the town of Matera is fantastic. Just as a note, if you are driving, be aware the roads leading to hotel are very narrow and difficult to maneuvor especially if you have a big car, although the hotel has separate parking facilities you can reserve. |

The location was fantastic. Located in the heart of the Sassi district of Matera, you felt as if you were living in antiquity. The Hotel was very beautiful and interesting being made from the caves itself, yet it had all the modern comforts one would desire. The breakfast buffet was very good and had a nice selection. The room was very large (especially for European standards), we slept 3 adults and 4 small children pretty comfortably, and the view was fabulous. Parking is available for daily fee despite what the booking website says, hotel is tricky to find by car, but well worth the trip! The beds were very hard and uncomfortable, added to the ambiance! :)) |

The view from the room was breathtaking. Matera is a hauntingly beautiful town. The desk staff was great, the breakfast was the best we had on our entire trip. There were a couple of minor annoyances, but they were completely overshadowed by the friendly service and the beauty of the area. |

everything about this hotel is perfect. It was the second time for us. We took some friends with us this time on a break without the kids. However the location is not suitable for anyone with walking or mobility problems due to the nature of the Sassi area. |

The restful location after the busyness of Alborobello and the district generally was a huge plus; the vaulted ground floor dining room/Lounge is an architectural gem. I think much could be made of the adjacent semi derilict building and its Trulli lean-to. I am an architect and can see the possibilities, assuming that money might be available in the future. |

It was unique because of it being inside caves. The medieval village that it was in was very interesting. I would like to see more luxurious bedding since the auterity of the caves makes it feel a bit cold |

Located in old part of town in historic building. Very special atmosphere. There are many staircases in and around the hotel, which might be a problem for older persons. |

We thoroughly enjoyed this hotel as it was such a unique place to stay. We paid more for a deluxe room online but when we arrived we asked to change to a more authentic deluxe cave room as our room was more conventional construction. We were told that all double rooms are the same price which we didn't understand as we'd definitely paid more. We did however move to an impressive cave room which I would definitely recommend staying in if possible for a more unique experience. The hotel can also arrange a guided tour around Matera which I thoroughly recommend as the place has so much history. I would definitely stay here again and Matera is one of the most amazing places I have ever visited, truely amazing and well worth a visit. The first room we were given wasn't as much of an authentic cave room as we expected. This was resolved but I would definitely recommend to reserve a cave room if possible to gain an authentic stay. |

Simply perfect. The location is ideal to see everything, Amazingly designed rooms in the rock, tidy and clean, having a fantastic view. When the time for breakfast comes, you remember what home made breakfast is. All the staff is helpful and polite (and they speak english too!! - important and rare in Italy!) Nothing. They should stay as they are. |

Right after checkout, we had a car accident in front of the hotel. A hotel staff helpted us negociate with local people. Without her help, our trip would have been a bad memory because of the car accident. I can not thank them enough. |

Locanda di San Martino was our last night after a 12-day trip in South Italy and Sicily and it was really hard for us to leave after such a perfect experience! The hotel is situated in a very comfortable location of the sassi area offering great view and wonderful surroundings. The architecture is unique and during our stay we had the feeling of living in a real "sassi" in a past age! The room was one of the most special and beautiful rooms we have ever stayed. Matera in an unforgettable and amazing place and Locanda di San Martino is the best choice for every visiotor there! |

Situated in the centre of the Sassi district, and near Piazza San Pietro Caveoso, this striking historic palace has been completely renovated with care taken to maintain its original features. |
The historic residence Ridola was built in 1872 by architect Leonardo Ridola, brother of the Senator Domenico - a passionate archaeologist to whom the National Museum of Matera is dedicated. |
Featuring luxurious amenities and enchanting views of the famous Sassi di Matera, Palazzo Gattini combines modern design and a fascinating historic setting. |
When in Matera, no questions about the most central, comfortable accommodation: Hotel San Domenico Al Piano welcomes you to the historic centre, 50 metres from the central Piazza Vittorio Veneto. |
