What a fantastic experience in the Sassi district of Matera. Our cave accommodation (#24)was perfect; large, very modern, clean and surprisingly light. Wi-fi is free and worked perfectly for both of us. Good restaurants and sights are all within walking distance. Highlights of our stay were the spa with it's amazing underground pool and, in the evenings, sitting outside our front door with a bottle of vino rosso, watching the swallows and the beautiful Falcons fill the evening sky. Marvellous! Nothing

Great room. It really added to the experience of Matera by having a cave room. Although there is not parking on site, they do have a service that will park your car for you during your stay. The breakfast was plentiful and delicious. Many egg dishes to choose from. The hotel was very central to all things to do in Matera. Our children wished they could have enjoyed the pool. It would be nice if they allowed an hour a day for kids.

The quirkiness of the rooms built into the geography of the area. The breakfast quality was very good

Really enjoyed our stay at this property. Our room was huge, which was perfect with two engery filled children. The room was bright and sunny, and had the feeling of luxury in a cave. Bathroom and shower were nice and super clean. The best aspect of this stay, though was their breakfast. We've traveled a lot throughout Italy and this was by far the best breakfast! Traditional Italian, yet it had pizza torts and other delicious breakfast item served by very courteous staff with morning caffe'. The people that looked after our big American car took great care of it and no new scratches, which is impressive with how narrow some of those streets were.Unfortantely, did not get to visit the spa, so can not comment. It would be nice to have several signals of wi-fi in the room. There were four of us, each with an electronic device which required an internet signal and we had to share a single signal.

Unique spa in a cave. Great location in the middle of the sassi of Matera. Spa was crowded. Lobby area was under renovations and not accessible during our stay.

Locanda di San Martino is a repurposed building--originally it was a church and monastery. It is a fine example of how old properties can be used for new purposes. When I arrived, the bathroom sink was without a stopper. I called the desk to ask if I could get a plug. They sent a repairman with a new stopper and it took about half an hour to get it working. Also, the Jacuzzi tub did not work the first day. I called for directions to get it started, was told to look for a switch on the wall, which I couldn’t find. The next day, someone had to reset the tub before it would function.

Good location to visit the Sassi area. Close to great restaurants.Very clean. Great breakfast.Pleasant staff. Nice spa area for after a day of walking. Directions from train station were very confusing due to lack of street signs. A better map should be posted on web site.

fantastici town and fantastic hotel. Historic, design, spa, silence, peace Nothing. Just a small remark: the access to the spa is forbidded for people aged less than 18 (safety reason).

What a great hotel! Loved our "cave" room (#29), which had a sleeping loft with 2 twin beds, perfect if you're travelling with children. Everything was spotless. There was no wifi, but they had wired internet available from our room, and I was able to borrow a cable from the front desk. We especially enjoyed the luxurious thermal spa. What a great way to relax after a day of walking around Matera! The hotel was easy to find (we walked from the train station); breakfast was great (even some hard-boiled eggs, which we seldom see in Italy); and we found a bookcase in the breakfast room with books that other travelers had left, so we traded two of our completed books for two new ones.

Characterful building in picturesque location. We had room 12 which was not large but satisfactory with a good view of the sassi but it was not in a cave. The pool was an extra cost - should be included. Wi-fi didn't work well and reception staff could not explain reason.

Liked the room and the location of the hotel. Liked their pool. Breakfast was OK. Definitely it could be better. And also pool hours were too short. They should keep it open for much longer hours.

Delicious full breakfast We used the spa facilities and it was very different and relaxing after a long day Hotel staff very accommodating It is not your usual hotel with large streets in front. We where glad to have read the reviews about the hotel and decided since we did have a car we packed an overnight bag rather than dragging our suitcases the walk was not bad at all

Breathtaking views of the Sassi! Beautiful, unique cavernous rooms with all amenities. Lovely terrace outside our room for sipping wine and enjoying a cigar. Hard to imagine that a place like the Sassi still exists on this earth! Definitely worth adding to your Italy trip itinerary (although I'd say that two days/ nights is plenty of time to explore this area) Tricky driving, even with our gps (but worth it when you finally arrive!)
