Area information
The sassi in Matera is a vast historical district consisting of an ensemble of very old buildings and excavated caves, built out of the area's characteristic tufa limestone.
Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993, the Sassi has been extensively restored into modern dwellings. Take a trip to the Ridola National Archaeological Museum and the new Museum of Modern Art.
Matera is a half-hour's drive from the sandy beaches of the Ionian Coast. Visitors can enjoy mountaineering excursions in the Parco Nazionale del Pollino.
